Lead Poisoning and Firearms

I was actually worried about this once after decades of casting my own bullets and shooting. I assumed with the casting that often was done outside but in an area protected from the wind that I would be high on lead levels, along with shooting only lead ammo. So I got tested...was lower than average and no worries.

Quit smoking years ago when I was 22. Got out of breath way too easy for a young man. Don't know how I ever smoked. Just decided I no longer wanted to be the tobacco company's motherless . Average that 1K a year over the last 40 years at 7% I've averaged in the market, and that is 214K. 40k to big tobacco, or an extra 214k in my retirement. That choice is pretty simple.

good reminder thanks the indoor range i go to dont allow drinks in the shooting area. note to self wear n95 mask. i quit smoking cold turkey after 20+ years during covid. got tired of lying to my kids about the smell. hahaha

N95 will block out a lot of particulates, but the recommendation is for P100 for lead. N95 is cool or any type of protection will guard against some level of particulates. It's one of the reason I always wear a gator, not super effective but its still a physical barrier.

Yes it is. Many jacketed bullets leave the base of the bullet unjacketed, or even if they are totally jacketed the primers produce a lead dust upon combustion. Definitely watch the video if you haven't already.

how's about plated bullets like blazer brass?

i'm looking into lead free or at the very least tmj or plated or powdercoated bullets to reduce lead exposure

the exposure comes from the primers, primers have a particularly bioavailable form of lead that's much more toxic than elemental lead found in bullets. Elemental lead isn't very soluble. The lead found in paint and gasoline were also forms of (not elemental) lead hence their toxicity.

Tobacco can also very easily ruin your life. For instance, besides causing lung cancer, emphysema, etc, you end up smelling like an ashtray which can hinder your relationships.

Everyone has different biological responses to nicotine. Winston Churchill drank like a fish and always had a cigar hanging lived to 90, Deng Xiaoping was a chain smoker and lived to age 94. My own grandmother started smoking cigarettes at age 16 and lived to 93.

Anecdotes are not evidence. The exceptions prove the rule.

Air inside of gun ranges is poisonous. If tested California would probably shut them down.

Outdoors is fine.

My father quit his lifetime of smoking in one day. He decided he didn't want to smoke anymore.

My grandmother smoked two packs a day her entire life. She died at 101 with healthy lungs. I wouldn't recommend trying to best her.

She did burn a hole in my back when I was 9. Got me in the laundry room. Otherwise, no problems. I never smoked and lungs are good.

When I was in high school, my father would sometimes wake me up with a huge cloud of cigarette smoke blown into my face. Either that or a glass of water thrown onto my face.

But, yea, i am a smoker, and I could go on and on and on, going on and on and on.

I do want to quit smoking, so sometimes I just throw my hands up in the air instead, and say "aye, gotta let go", cause I want to celebrate and live my life, and repeating "aye, gotta let go".

But I go to the club to rock out, and I go all night, and end up lighting it up.
