Live round I picked up at the range today

I picked up what I thought was a live round at the range today. When I first looked at it, I thought it was a live round with severe setback on the projectile. Upon closer inspection, I found that it was actually a live around forced into what was left of a separated piece of brass. New one for me. Thought you guys might like to see.

thats funny because they may not have even realized, the case separated but then the next one extracted it
 
I had a Mini-14 that did that with cheaper brass like American Eagle. The case gets torn apart during extraction, and the next round gets chambered inside of it. I ended up selling the gun (with full disclosure). The guy sent it back to Ruger and they sent him a brand new gun. It had something to do with an imperfection in the channel that the bolt traveled back in during the cycling process.
 
Talk about a hard malfunction. Usually it'd take a case extractor to get out the separated case. Apperantently the person didn't see the separated case when they jacked out the other half and then proceeded to rechamer another round. Apparently they were able to get the separated case and the newly loaded round out together.

This is likely the most common thing that happens when cases split about half-way up the case body.
The front part of the case stays in the chamber while the rear section is extracted and ejected.
Then the next live round is fed into the chamber but the bolt can not close because the live round gets stuck inside the remaining front half of the previous case that split.
Then you run a failure drill and you rack out the live round and the front half of the split case.
