You sold you off roster pistol that people generally sell for $2500 for half price? That's very nice of you but not typical. You can barely find an SP01 for that price these days

I’d buy an Sig P365 variant as well. Those guns are so nice. I’ve shot quite a few and don’t own one either. Need to pick one up.

You are hard pressed to buy a nice AR for $1K. If you find one, you don’t know it yet but you won’t want it. Sure it’ll run and probably be all Mil-spec parts. But zero % chance it’ll stay like that. You’ll change all kinds of things on it to customize. Next thing you know….you are $2K in.

Save your money a little and buy a used LWRC. You won’t regret it.

Meaning if I get a handgun it’ll be most likely be for concealed. As far as for the rifles, I’m looking something fun to shot at the range but can still use for home defense.

I have a new rifle for hd now but used my Saint Victor when that's all I had. Right now, I can't be told any different that an AR-15 (chambered in 5.56 with the right ammo and good planning) is the best firearm for hd when it comes to terminal ballistics, capacity, accuracy and over-penetration risk. Checkout this video from Garand Thumb on the best weapons and calibers for home defense.

Not sure where you're located or what your resources are but this is an amazing training: Interior Tactics/Home Defense by Paladin Tactical. It's held at a shoot house in Novato, CA where LEO/SWAT teams train. You'll learn how to best setup your home to "deter, detect, delay, deny, and defend" if you absolutely have to, along with clearing rooms and being challenged with home defense scenarios. I've taken it twice, so far.

They also run a Harden Your Home, Zoom training (which isn't currently on the calendar) but you can email them and ask about it. One of the trainers is a former FBI SWAT breacher, who specialized in breaking into homes of criminals. He'll talk about all the things that make it difficult for SWAT teams that you can employ for potential intruders and perhaps make them just give up.

I'll preface/"credential" with I was/am a new shooter/owner. I spent A LOT of time and money on firearms, parts, training in the last year so I skilled up rather quickly. But it's a big world with so much to learn and experience. I have plenty of "if I had to do it all over again" opinions and I think getting a rifle at this point is a good next step. I was thinking pretty much the same as you and landed on a Springfield Saint Victor 5.56 (there's also one in .308) for my first carbine.

It currently retails for ~$1100-1300. Even though I've picked up/built some more premium rifles since, I still use it regularly. It ran great out of the box while allowing to upgrade and learn about the AR-15 and direct-inpingement platform. The only issue I've had was having one of my handguard screws fall out so I'd recommend loctiting those.

Also, consider getting a complete Glock 17 (9mm) upper or .40 to 9mm conversion barrel for your G40.

For EDC, consider the Sig P365 X-Macro. I've shot all of those guns you listed and the X-Macro is the best imo. You can also change parts around to make it a Fuse (full-size), X-Macro/XL (compact/carry size), standard P365 (sub-compact). The Echelon has similar modularity but the aftermarket/OEM parts system still isn't quite there.

Thanks for the very informative response, I totally forgot they make a conversion barrel for my glock. However I don’t think that’s the route I wanna take considering it’s a full size and I have baby hands . It was my first gun and I just bought prematurely without going to a range and shooting one. Yes I can shoot it, pretty accurately, but it just feels too big in my hands and dont feel like I can properly hug the handle. I’ve even considered selling/trading it for something smaller I can actually wrap my little sausage fingers around.

The takeaway from this is that you should go try before you buy! One way is to pick up guns in a store to see which ones make the cut - out of those, rent ones to make a final decision. I've also got small hands and hate the Glock grip, but M&Ps, Echelons, and VP9s all feel good to me. Some people really connect with the PDP, but it wasn't for me. Smaller guns like the P365/Hellcat/Shield (and all their variants) will probably feel good in store but not at the range =)

Seems like you're missing a 9mm! An HK VP9K/F is right at your budget before taxes. I just DROs'ed one yesterday after trying out the older VP9 model!

Well yea I’ve learned that since then. I was a newbie and didn’t even know gun ranges let you rent firearms I thought those places was a BYOG type of place. Then when I did find out they rent firearms none around me would rent to a solo shooter, they would make you have a party of two+ to rent. I’ve now since found a place that will let me rent as a solo shooter, and not only that their rentals is a one time fee of $20 of unlimited rentals as long as I use their ammunition.

Shoots .556 Ammo, no issues with Featureless vs Upper Disconnet vs Fixed Mags. Also as a lefty it has ambi safety and mag release. I swapped the Magpul Tan stock as the colore match wasn't great and tossed on a Swampfox LVPO 1-8

I’m not getting a 22 AR my guy, no shade to people who run ARs in 22 but I feel that’s at least a 5.56,7.62.,.308, 300blk like that. Only reason I wanted the MP5 in a 22 is because the 9mm version changes too much internally where it’s not even a MP5 anymore IMO. And plus it’s an iconic rifle and thought it would be cool to have in the safe.

Hello my beautiful people hope everyone is having a great day. So I currently own 2 handguns I got a Glock 22 (full size .40) bone stock with a XLR light and 9 mags. And my other handgun is a Rock island 1911 in .45 with 5 mags. I’m now looking for my next firearm. I’ve got a handful in mind, but I’d want to get all of them eventually but don’t know what would be the smarter next move. So I was thinking if getting a rifle next Sport III,CMMG BR3(4), Aero M4E1, HK MP5, Sig MCX Regulator. If I get a handgun I was thinking of: Echelon Compact (gear bundle), Hellcat Pro (gear bundle), PDP compact. It’ll probably be something EDC. Any suggestions or recommendations is greatly appreciated.

If you want an EDC, then either gun you currently own will be fine. I would suggest that you get a second Glock 22 to use for training and practice. Set both up identically. However, given the current California environment, getting another G22 is going to be tough.

My basic strategy given the three gun limit for CCW is to have one large, one medium and one small gun on the permit. For you, those could be (given what you have, the list provided, and what's on the roster):

1) Large: Glock 22
2) Medium: Springfield Echelon 4"
3) Small: Ruger LCP Max

I would expect the Echelon to be the gun you carry 90% of the time. It's in the Glock 19 class of handguns, which makes it great for carry without the compromises of a smaller gun or the annoyance of a larger one. The G22 may be your outdoor hiking gun (loaded with hot penetrator ammo) and the LCP is your deep concealment gun.

I do know several people fill all the slots with the same gun. That's legit and covers mechanical malfunctions.

Personally, I like to have several long guns available:

Something in 308 in battle rifle config (M1A or Garand or whatever)
AR-15 of some sort
Hunting bolt action in 300 Win Mag or other heavy cartridge (minimum 30-06)
Sporting shotgun for trap and skeet, maybe ducks
Ruger 10/22
Lever action in a caliber paired with a revolver or 30-30 if you don't have a revolver
Defensive style shotgun like a Mossberg 590

This is a pretty good collection of guns. Beware the Ruger 10/22...they are the most fun gun evah and tend to accumulate in the gun safe somehow.

22's are great! But in my opinion that's for "advanced shooters": already learned all the fundamentals (and personal preferences) around operation, tactics, maintenance and troubleshooting (22LR is rather finnicky) and now high-volume makes sense for your next training goals.

If you can afford to keep that Glock I think it's still worth having, at least one for a rainy day - converting it to 9mm, of course.

As I mentioned before around the P365 platform, there's A LOT of opportunity around getting it to fit and operate the way you want, especially if you have smaller hands. The biggest "drawback" (or benefit) is there's so many options/upgrades and you can get carried away dumping A LOT of money into it. Very mature OEM and aftermarket.

I can no longer recommend P320 (still my preferred platform) for full-size just because some ranges and clubs have banned them. Still a great gun, especially the California version. I tried Glock but it's just not for me and now I'm on M&P 2.0 for full-size. I think it's worth checking out for a full-size option as the interchangeable backstraps might be good enough to get a good fit. I do like the fit of the VP9 as well, but landed on M&P. But again, you could get the P365 convert to a full-size as well.

I'd recommend starting more standard, less proprietary platforms and calibers. Think [mostly] mil-spec, direct impingement (standard AR-15), 5.56 and 9mm. Parts availability and pricing are going to be your best friend, especially with new and upcoming California restrictions.

Since you have two handguns, how about a long gun? You can either build your own AR if you're into that kinda of thing, or there are a few around the $1000 worth taking a look at. A buddy of mine got an IWI Zion on sale at turners for around $800 and it's been great. Theres also a Ruger and FN AR for around the same price. I'd go that route. If not, a bolt gun is a lot of fun as well.
