As much as people complain, CA still has a lot of very good things about it. Eureka is a pretty dang cool area. Some drug and crime problems have gotten worse, but that is the same for everywhere in the country. I know several real estate investor type folks who swear that area is a great place to buy right now as prices are going to rise as it grows, so you may be setting up the kids and grandkids in a good way by buying now.
Welcome back, and enjoy the coast! I moved away from the ocean to the mountains several years ago and miss it sometimes.
No rush to do so now, but once you're settled, do some looking at other options than just a grip fin. I agree, working the rifle without thumb use is odd and awkward, but there's a lot of other options that are legal with detachable mags that are pretty dang good. I hate fixed mags for anything other than a bench rifle. Maybe you'll find something you like.
I'm a 4th generation Eureka/Humboldt native and most of my family is still there. We visit almost yearly there in our motorhome, so I definitely know the vibe and changes there. Not happy the way it's been Going for sure. The 2A stuff, vehicle stuff, crazy gas prices. House and property tax all of it sucks and it's extremely hard to choke down.
I broke free of CA. I broke free from the state in 2014. It definitely felt good. At the time we didn't figure we'd ever be grandparents but here we are. The wife is 100% onbord with this plan. Her idea not mine, but we're the only grandparents and I'd also like to be with them and help raise them. Take them shooting & camping. Maybe even some gold panning and detecting up on the Trinty & new river areas.
I'm definitely going to enjoy shooting up on South fork mountain again, and up on Horse mountain area. I'm also still a member of the Humboldt trap & skeet club in McKinleyville. Not looking forward to the move or selling our house here. Decision been made, and we're making progress here preparing for the move.
I also don't do 30 rd magazine dumps anymore. Got that out of my system while living here. Its awaste of ammo IMHO. During and After covid it got expensive to do that.. Im stacked deep for all calibers i shoot, and i reload, so i wont have to worry about that either. 10 rd mags will work just fine. Although I have a whole cabinet full of 30 rounders. Amazing what a guy can collect in 10 years. Pisses me off that CA Disregards the U.S. Constitution, and our 2A rights.
When I grew up in Eureka almost every other pickup truck had a rifle and a gun rack. You could go shooting on the beach against the dunes, and down at the river bar. You could drive on the beach, collect wood for bon fires and not worry about an endangered species salamander.
Where my family used to go duck hunting is now a wild life preserve.
Way to much purple and pink hair these days in town. And now that Humboldt State is (cal poly Humboldt) all the liberals migrate there. I seen it along time ago when we used to gripe about the people from southern calif coming up with their money an ideas and that started the downfall of a once great place to live, work, and raise a family. Not anymore. Sounds like I'm running towards the fire, and we are.
I still have 2 other hobbies ( although guns are a way of life for me) and not a hobby, but I still have motorcycling and Ham radio to fall back on, and they both keep me real busy. And if course prepping for the Zombie Apocalypse
