This is a forum name I have used over the years. It started in the early days for my love of the German car culture.

First car was a 1958 vw bug ragtop. Probably 20-30 other German cars since that.

Those were some LARGE German dreams!!

Newer German cars are highly over engineered but if you work on this yourself and have a few tools it’s not bad.

Honestly it probably molded my brain into me being a little bit of a chubby chaser.

I completely agree!


The new golfs are super nice.
I currently own a 65 bug, 19 vw atlas, and 16 Jetta. The atlas and Jetta have been super loyal cars and have required very minimal maintenance or repairs.

Not sure if it is still true but Germans Drive not Commute.
My older brother was in Stuttgart for a few years back in the 1990s.
The engineers at Porsche could not understand the need for cup holders.
Also the need to continue the 911 design/redesign.
Seems like "German Engineers" are always looking for more on road performance not creature comforts.
The US market forces design changes for In-N-Out Burgers and the ability to hold a Super Gulp.

I owned a English car, never owned German.
Triumph TR-7....engine was junk always overheating.
Could not find a TR-8
So I dropped in a Mazda RX-7 engine, that was fun to drive but no cup holders.......
Still had it until 2012, totaled by another car.
Yes, that red/orange one is a FIAT.

This I completely correct. It’s also true for many other countries also. In the US, the average person uses vehicles as a tool to get them from point A-B. In other countries though, vehicles are a way to enjoy the driving experience. There are many “American” vehicles that try to produce a similar experience but it’s honestly not the same.

There is a caveat to this though. There is nothing like driving an old American car with a big block!

I built a race prepped 2+ liter Porsche engine for it, added Koni adjustable shocks, rear anti sway bar, track quality brake pads and steel reinforced sidewall Michelin tires. I used to chase Porsches with it in the Santa Cruz mountains. They always ended up letting me pass them. They couldn’t lose me.

That's awesome! The prices of old VWs are so wild these days. I always keep my eye out for a bus, but I can't justify the price.

I don’t know what happened to my bus. I sold it to some guy in Santa Cruz. I should have never sold it. If you run across a red and white 73 bus with a custom interior dual Weber 44’s, it was likely mine. There are many surprises inside that engine. Including a Melling cast iron racing oil pump, a windage tray, an 009 distributor and a custom cam ground by the famous John DeLong from San Jose.
