Hi everybody,

Happy to join this site. I have roots all over our beloved, if sometimes funny, state. I have to say, I miss the Govenator.

I'm mostly up north. It's interesting to me for shooting because of the depths and heights of these ridges, what's going on with the mercurial weather, what the four legged critters are up to, what our ocean is up to, Bigfoot activity (ha ha), and so on. There's always something to learn and I'm glad for that.

I have some of the basics. I've been digging 9mm lately and have yet to shoot my AR15 in 300 HAM'R. Just got it and can't wait!

I found this site through the Reddit CAguns community.

I recently got into firearms and purchased my first handgun, a P320 XFull. It’s been a lot of fun so far and I'm officially addicted.

Next, I’m planning to add a shotgun, then a rifle, a 1911, and eventually some type of .22LR to the collection.

Any recommendations or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I’m also considering getting my FFL03 + COE.

If I buy a firearm through a gun shop, an FFL transfer, or from someone here on the forum, what’s the difference in the final cost?

For example, do private sales avoid things like:
• CA sales tax (~7.75–10.25% depending on city)
• the 11% CA firearms excise tax?

Is buying from someone here considered a Private Party Transfer (PPT)? And if so, do we still have to meet at an FFL to complete the transfer?

Also trying to understand the cost differences:

• Buying from a gun shop – no transfer fee but you pay taxes
• Buying online and shipping to an FFL – taxes plus the FFL transfer fee
• Buying from someone here – PPT fee only and no taxes?

You pay the seller, then give the firearm to the ffl, ffl does the DROS and keeps it for the 10 days.

All the seller does is collect cash, handover gun to ffl.

So for a PPT, an FFL is still involved, got it.


Seller: brings the firearm to the FFL.
Buyer: brings the cash to the FFL.


FFL: runs the DROS, holds the firearm and the payment for the 10 day waiting period, and charges their own transfer fee to the buyer. After the 10 days, the buyer picks up the firearm, the seller receives the payment, and the FFL keeps their fee.


What’s the best way to find an FFL? Should I just go to any gun shop and ask what they charge for PPTs? Or are the prices generally the same everywhere?
