If I'm doing PTT, and I'm the buyer, does the individual seller start the DROS transfer process? What's the process? We don't need FFL?
You agree on a price, agree on an FFL to meet up at, go meet and inspect the gun to confirm it’s as advertised, give him the money, you each fill out paperwork, one of you pays the PPT/DROS fees (usually buyer but you could negotiate), FFL has bg check done and you come get the gun 10 days later.

Thanks for clarifying.

So for a PPT, an FFL is still involved, got it.

Seller: brings the firearm to the FFL.
Buyer: brings the cash to the FFL.

FFL: runs the DROS, holds the firearm and the payment for the 10 day waiting period, and charges their own transfer fee to the buyer. After the 10 days, the buyer picks up the firearm, the seller receives the payment, and the FFL keeps their fee.

What’s the best way to find an FFL? Should I just go to any gun shop and ask what they charge for PPTs? Or are the prices generally the same everywhere?
Seller goes home with your money the day you begin the DROS. If your background fails, you’re out of luck unless you’ve worked something out with the seller. There is only one transfer fee which most likely you’ll end up paying. I believe state law limits what the transfer and fee is to $47.

Google FFLs near you, go to their site and sometimes they have the fee listed. You can also call and ask, rather than driving around. You’ll most likely be meeting at an FFL of the seller’s choice though .

Hey folks, good to meet ya.

Ex-Air Force vet, been out in SF since 2017 but just found out about this site from reddit. I’d been avoiding the whole CA buying process (got my firearms stationed in TX + FL, which was a… *brief* vetting process).

Current fave is a .357 SIG P229 I’ve had forever, but having fun kitting out a new MR556 from here. Usually tend towards HK, FN, Walther, but shoot a little bit of everything. May try for SFPD CCW later this year if I’m feeling it.

Anyways, happy to be here, hope I’ll see y’all around Bay Area ranges.

Yes, the actual PPT dealer fee is $10, and the DROS is $37. $47 is the maximum you’ll pay the FFL on a PPT transaction.

On the other hand, if you buy a gun online, then the FFL transfer fee will vary.

I believe the DROS is capped at $31.19, the FSA fee is $1, and the S&E fee is $5, capping the whole thing at $37.19. As I understand it, the FFL fees themselves could vary wildly. I've heard of a range between $10 & $75, so it might be best to "shop around". However, I'm still learning all of this myself, so my info may always be incorrect.

Thank you. I'm still learning myself and someone just told me about this website where you can find FFL near you using this link: https://www.gunbroker.com/ffl/index

Hello, all, I'm Jayson from Murrieta, and I've been quietly lurking for about two weeks before making my intro. Kind of an old forum habit, lol.

I've been around firearms my whole life. I grew up hunting and shooting on the East Coast and have spent a majority of my adult life in a career that required handling of various weapons. I've let my love for firearms... smolder since coming back to CA though. I guess I figured it was just easier to not have to deal with any of the silly laws that stomp on my rights than to put in any effort.

Long story longer, about two months ago, one of the Ring cameras in our house caught a glimpse of someone in our back yard. It then recorded our back door swinging open and someone standing in the doorway. (One of my kids had gone into our yard after I went to sleep and left the door unlocked). The would-be intruder bailed when he heard my older (20-something) kids were still awake. The next night, only a few streets away an older man and his wife were attacked in their home with a screwdriver and a knife. She survived, he did not.

That was the eye- opener I needed. I got my ass enrolled in Jiu Jitsu. My 10 y/o daughter took interest, so I got her enrolled too. I've submitted all my paperwork to the DOJ (you know, since I just brought all my firearms into the state) which has been... trying. Whenever they finally clear everything, I'm applying for my CCW, FFL-03 & COE. I'm jumping in with both feet.

I have a relatively small roster now. Some handguns, rifles and a shotgun. It's time to fill in some gaps, so I've been doing a LOT of research. I've deep-dived firearms and CA laws. I've made lists of needs and wants. I'm PPT'ing a Mossberg 500 this week. After that I'll be looking for a 9mm PCC and a .22 SA pistol, since my 19 y/o daughter has shown interest in learning to shoot.

My wife is supportive, which is nice. Our first date was at a gun range. She took me to a gun show for my birthday one year and handed me a wad of cash. But I don't get any more gun money until I clean out my garage. 🤣 Even then, I'll have to make smart, well- informed decisions.

Fave YT channels right now are probably:
Honest Outlaw
Doug Johnson (SoCal local)
Chewjitsu

Faves from my stable right now are:
Springfield XD 4" 9mm
Type 56 Carbine 7.62×39mm

If you've read this far: thank you for taking the time out of your day to learn about me. I'm sure I'll see some of you around the forums.

was skimming through it but the story from 2 months ago caught my eye. That is crazy!

Welcome to the forum and check out the classifieds. I recently found Doug’s channel, pretty relatable
Thank you for the warm welcome! I've been perusing the classifieds since I created an account; I'm even watching a few items. Hopefully I'll get that garage cleaned, to my wife's standard, today. Lol.

Hello. Home (San Diego) range is TGR and South Bay Rod and Gun. Mostly practicing rifles for hunting prep but starting more on handguns.

🤣 well, right now I've got $0 to work with, lol. But your listing IS an attractive handgun. I've only got items to trade with now, and nothing firearm related. You need some 34×30 pants, large button-ups, or a new wiper motor for a 2015-2026 Mustang? 🤣🤣🤣
Make it a TTE810/Pure750 turbo for a B9 S5 and you got a deal 😁

I’d take 6 RS5 injectors too

I mean... if I didn't hate my wife's BMW so much already, I might consider an Audi for myself. But, I gotta go pick my kids up from school, so lemme see what I see along the way. I'm pretty quick with a wrench... i may just be able to "find" what you're looking for...

Hello all, longtime Calgun member who's been busy w life, marriage, kids, all that stuff...same username as before. Currently in Sacramento area. Kids are getting older and I'm finding time to myself nowadays so I'm returning to my old haunts:) not sure what happened to calguns but a quick search led me here....looking forward to getting back into shooting again. Seems like California is still passing new BS day after day, thought political climate lately would tilt in our favor by now but we are still under siege. I'm also looking at paring my collection down, lots of Pre-locks and a few other goodies I'll post at some point once I get used to site. Thank you!
