One in the chamber or no?

One of the major through lines in this thread is to get CCW specific training and continue to train and practice. Shooting itself is a perishable skill but just being able to shoot well alone is not adequate for concealed carry.

If you don’t trust your trigger discipline or holstering ability to manipulate a loaded firearm then you need more training.

I know for myself that the mandatory 16 hours wasn’t enough so I sought out additional training and continue to do so regularly.

Carrying with one in the chamber CLEARLY is faster and less issues when you have to draw, no question as it has been well documented everywhere.

Has anyone actually considered the difference in the use case for Israeli carry versus American carry?

My impression is that Israeli civilian carry exists within a much stronger civil defense and counterterrorism context, whereas American concealed carry is generally centered more on individual self defense against ordinary criminal threats.

Yet I see a lot of social media taking techniques associated with “Israeli carry” and treating them as universally applicable, without considering whether the original context and threat model are even the same.

Just my thoughts.

I thought Isreali carry came about when they were first standing up the IDF, they had all manner of sidearms, lugers, hi powers, tokarevs etc because they were buying any surplus they could get their hands on. also they had a lot of conscripts. Therefore the carry without chambering was born out of necessity because they could not feasibly teach all the different manuals of arms for each kind of firearm.

When my daughter was really young, I didn’t keep any rounds in the chamber at the home despite the firearms being locked up. Just wanted extra layer of protection and at the time, you couldn’t get a CCW in the Bay Area (tried and was rejected) so I didn’t need to address a gun on my person. Now that she’s much older, those weapons I want to reach for are chambered.

But like most everything in life (thankfully) we get to decide what works best for each of us. I CLEARLY understand carrying without one in the chamber puts me a disadvantage in certain situations. Not all situations, but certainly in close quarter situations. Yet I still have made the conscience decision that is what works for me. I have ~20+ firearms in my safe. None have the mags/ammo in them yet all have loaded mags near them. I have 3 in quick access safes around the house. All are loaded but none are chambered.

While I may not be 100% prepared for all scenarios (nobody is), I feel prepared enough for most scenarios.

Idk if it’ll convince anyone but when I drew my CCW to save my life from a guy attacking with a metal baseball bat trying to crack me open, I would not have had time to rack the slide. Another second later I would have been toast, and that was with a fast draw. Imagine trying to chamber a round while your brains are being splattered on the ground. No thanks, I’m good.

If you can’t carry a loaded modern handgun you don’t have the skill or confidence to carry. Sorry

We may not convince anyone who has already made up their mind. But people who are on the fence, new to carrying or undecided my be able to read arguments from both sides and made a decision based on what is presented here. I think it still has some value even if this thread looks like a deadlock

My father is a retired police detective and when he started carrying semiautomatic pistols he stated he never carried with one in the chamber due to accidental discharge. The training he did allowed him to rack one in seconds. I stated I personally carry one in the chamber due to being in a self defense situation I may not have time or a malfunction happening when I try to put a round in the chamber. Why chance that? Secondly if I invest in a good holster the odds of an accidental discharge due to my negligence is slim to none. What do you think? One in the chamber or no?

If one doesn’t like one in the chamber, maybe a revolver would be the way to go. Sure you are downloading by one but would give you peace of mind.

You can overcome that with training, but most will not put in the work especially if not prior service.

That assumes you have a free hand available. A lot of altercations occur at contact distance with a high likelihood of needing to ward off the initial attack.

Why is that FUDD? You go slower until you build your muscle memory and smoothness, then you can start doing it faster. Just like motorcycle racing. You don’t start out fast you’ll just crash and die
