What are everyone's impressions here of the Staccato HD vs the Platypus?

i had a platypus and sold it after a couple of months. just didn't feel like it was worth the price.

I have both. They’re both great guns, but I hate that they both use proprietary parts that make changing things like the reach of the trigger and the mag release challenging, if not impossible. But at least Stealth Arms makes most of their proprietary parts available for sale on their website. Staccato does not, and their customer service said in an email if you ever need a small part like a new mag catch you have to send the entire gun to them. In California that means shipping through an FFL. I haven’t tried changing the mainsprings on either, but I was able to swap out my recoil spring in the Platypus for lower power factor USPSA ammo. The Platypus uses the same recoil springs that everyone else does. Staccato does not. Maintaining the Staccato with fresh springs is going to be a challenge, unless the C2 recoil springs that they do sell also fit the HD P4.

I’m going to carry the P4, so I don’t mind using the factory weight springs in it. But until it becomes more tunable for lower power factor ammo, it’s not really feasible for competition. The length of the HD P4.5 will be better for competition anyway. I tried using the Platypus in a match. It performed well, but I fumbled several reloads because of the awkwardness of the mag release. It’s a small button that requires me to shift my stronghand grip to actuate, but the prickly grip on the gun works so well that shifting my grip on it takes some effort. So for now I’m sticking with my Prodigy for competition.

So back to your question, between the Platypus and the HD P4 . . . it just depends. You honestly can’t go wrong with either. For carry, I would definitely take the HD P4. The Platypus is registered as a .25 ACP single shot, so I don’t think I could get it on my permit anyway. For competition, I would take the Platypus. For general range use and shooting, I would take either. Or both. Between the two, I would probably take the Platypus, but only because of the limitations of the shorter barrel on the HD P4. But if I was really only going to buy one, I would probably just wait for the HD P4.5. LOL — how’s that for an answer?

Informative, what I was hoping for.

In California, you are not required to use an FFL to ship a firearm.

You are allowed to ship firearms directly to a manufacturer and the manufacturer can ship it back to the the sender (you, in this example) without involving an FFL.

The manufacturer can send you a shipping label or you can use a service like Ship My Gun (https://www.shipmygun.com/go/).

It was my understanding that Rifles yes, handguns no. Handguns need an FFL.

I haven't shipped a handgun in a long time, but I have sent them back for repairs using a prepaid label from the manufacturer.
I know UPS and Fedex may no longer accept shipments from those that don't have an FFL,
I'm not aware of any law in CA that prevents it.
For my own education, if such a law exists, can someone point it out to me?

Below this line is what Gunbrokers says. I added the bold highlighting.

Here is what the ATF "Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide"' (ATF P 5300.4) says:

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

Any particular reason why? Curious of others opinion.
I had the "trident" slide cut style which provides ZERO texture to rack the slide from the front which is how i usually do it, at the time they didn't have bull barrels only bushing, which im not a fan of, and they only had the chainlink style grip texture which also provides ZERO texturing. so the gun was slippery. when i would shoot it along with my other 2011's, i was definitely on the lower end of likability. If I were to get a new one, 100% would go with "Prickle" girp texture and the "Dual" slide cut style with a ported bull barrel.

I would take a platypus all Dave over the HD. I honestly shot 300 rounds out of it and sold it. I hate everything about it. Everybody was hoping the HD would be CA staccato P and it isn't even close. I have 3 2011s and honestly I choose my prodigy over both. I dont care for the platypus much either. My buddy has one and I wasn't impressed. However if you are having to choose between just those 2 options go with the Platypus.

I actually want the Staccato for what it is, a highend duty/ccw/range gun. Plus, I just can’t own something called a “Platypus.” 😂

If and I'm sure when the P4.5 of XC P4 are added to the roster I will get one of those. As another had said I will add it to my CCW just cause and the Platypus I dont know any CCW issuing agency that will allow a gun dros's as a SSE in a different Cal added without doing the correction first. To much of a headache.

Maybe if I find a PPT Platypus thats configured how I would prefer it I might go that route... but im in no hurry.

Not to segue the point of this thread, but shipmygun is legit. Very cheap, and very easy to use. I believe that they are a subsidiary of Buds.

I wouldn't ccw either one. Platypus is too big for that and the HD is too heavy

Vehicle/travel ccw. Like a chest rig under a zip up hoody/sweatshirt. Easy to reach while driving, etc and not uncomfortable for periods at a timedriving.

I have two guns that started off as a SSE .22 and now a semi auto 9mm on my ccw. - san diego

I've shipped several handguns directly to Staccato for parts changes and warranty work, and had them shipped directly back to my home without any issues. As another comment mentioned, Staccato will email you a UPS label so you can send it to them, then will ship it directly back to you with signature required for delivery.

the only issue I've had with shipping handguns for repair or whatnot was that Fedex requires you to use a "hub". and the only reason Fedex knew was they recognized smith and Wesson as the destination and asked. that was mildly annoying. UPS didnt even blink the last time I used them. but that's more off topic digression

I would want a comparison to the upcoming longer barreled, compensated HD coming. would seem to be a more apples to apples comparison

Care to share why you like the prodigy better

The Prodigy is 5" bull barrel which is superior to the other 2 and the action is butter smooth. I upgraded the ignition kit and put a flat atlas trigger in and it just sings. I like the grip panels on the prodigy 1000x better than the 💩 smooth plastic ones on the staccato and platypus as well. Just much better texturing.

The grips on the HD and platypus suck because they are fatter as well because they have to accept the clunky glonk mags. It just makes for a worse feeling and handling gun in my opinion.

All 3 stock triggers suck so apples to apples you will end up putting atlas triggers and reducing the trigger break by 50% in all 3 to make them serviceable.

Honestly I enjoy shooting the prodigy and have run it in a few USPSA competions and had zero issues. It is a great flat shooting 2011 and fun to shoot. I cannot say the same about either of the other 2 because they are not not 2011s and do not feel like one even though they are falsely being advertised as one.
