New to PPTs. At what point during a PPT is the payment made? I was thinking, after inspection, but before paperwork?

I think it's up to you and the seller, but personally I think a good point is after the buyer inspects it (I would never buy used guns sight unseen) and the FFL takes possession for the waiting period. Because at that point you are the owner (just not is possession yet).

I’ve only had 1 ask for payment before the paperwork started, but it does make sense. You need to work out something you are both comfortable with.

Greet, inspect, pay, complete paperwork.

Seller doesn’t have to stay the whole time as the seller has less paperwork.

You can ask the FFL, “May I pay him now?” Some FFLs don’t want money exchanging hands in the store.

Also, confirm the FFLs PPT process beforehand. Limited hours, appointments, storage fees etc.

Aw the good old days. Yes back in the day FFLs were touchy back moving money on their property, but I’m guessing with everything being electronic now they don’t care, but it’s still polite to ask them first.

Yes. Typically, it’s taken care of discreetly in the parking lot, unless the LGS doesn’t mind letting you do it inside.
I pay inside the store 95% of the time.

I never ask that question.
Let the FFL tell you to take it outside, if that's how they want it done.

That brings up another thing for the OP to communicate with the seller about, payment method. I’ve only done cash transactions, but some people might be okay with Venmo, CashApp etc. Try to avoid surprises.

Do yourself a favor and use a FFL that will release on Undetermined.
PPT can get a little dicey if you get Delayed.....Undetermined and the FFL will not release.

You should pay or a accept payment after the inspection is complete and the buyer accepts. It is a business transaction and $ should change hands before ownership/paperwork but honestly it's not that bad. Be cordial and polite and everything works itself out. I've never had an issue selling anything.

As an FFL, I preach this to customers constantly. If they will not release on undetermined, I would never use them for anything FFL related. Even as a seller. By law if they do not release, they will return the gun to you. And now you have to go do the whole process over again somewhere else. And I feel unlike a denial, you are obligated to since the dealer's decision not to lawful release on undetermined is completely out of the buyer's hands.

Now, I also think if you are PPTing to someone you do not know, you also need to go over your refund policy. If it were me, I would have a no refund policy. If they come back denied, I already used your money and the gun comes back to me. You should not have wasted my time. If they do not like that, then tell them this gun isn't for you. If they let their 30 days expire, $200 minimum to return to PPT again. Your time is valuable and you should not have to worry about whether someone can take possession of the firearm. Make that clear otherwise you have to come back up with the money you might have already spent because your buyer is not squared away. And that is why using a store that delivers on undetermined is important so it is one less thing everyone has to worry about.

As a seller, I usually allow the buyer to inspect the goods outside in my car before we proceed inside. Payment is usually handled outside prior to us walking into the FFL and initiating the PPT process. As a buyer, I usually ask the seller before hand when would they like the payment (usually outside of the FFL facilities).

I've read somewhere (a bit of an extreme case) that there was an FFL that did not like PPT money transactions indoors, and that they went as far as to tax the buyer/seller when it came to the transaction. I don't remember if the post was on CGN or if it was on CAguns...

I have never encountered this situation and didn't really think about it so thank you.

Happened to me at Sportsman's Warehouse.
Have made multiple firearm purchases with no delays.
Large box stores, small FFLs and PPTs.
S/W had a great sale on rifle and pistol so went in and purchased.
9 days in got delayed.....30 days Undetermined....they do not release on Undetermined.
Had the option of getting my $$ back or pay for another DROS.
I was good so DROS again, such a great sale was worth paying again.
10 days get approved and pick up.
Why did I have Undetermined ???? have no idea.
If that was a PPT the seller most likely would ask for more $$ to DROS again or tell me to pound sand.

From that time on will only do business at a FFL that will release on Undetermined.

Full on Denial can understand the seller keeping the $$ and Firearm.

Example...CADOJ "outstanding ticket" really that is a reason???
Just another B.S. story like being understaffed.

  • Can my driving record prevent me from purchasing a firearm?
    • Yes. If you have a conviction for a firearms-prohibiting offense, such as felony drunk driving, your driving record would affect your ability to purchase a firearm. Furthermore, your driver's license must be valid. A revocation, outstanding ticket, or fine may cause your license to be invalid.
