RDS vs IRON SIGHTS

Wear what you are comfortable with as RDS shouldn't affect concealment and just swap in suppressor sights to co-witness. Get best of both.

Thanks for that. I presume LEOs prefer em because they are much more likely to be called into a situation wherein they enter with guns drawn and engage bad guys from a distance whereas a CCW civilian is far less likely to find himself (or herself) in a comparable situation. I'm the "less is more" kinda guy but may get a second slide w/ optic so I can adapt to whatever travels come my way.
We're seeing them used as close as contact distance and as far as 25-30 yards. I have found the red dot to be advantageous at all reasonable pistol distances. With proper training and technique, more practiced shooters can achieve sub-second draws with red dot pistols and average shooters in the 1-1.5 second range. Red dots are also beneficial across all lighting conditions in varied environments.

There is really no situation where iron sights will outperform a red dot optic. Lining up 2 things is a lot easier than 3 especially at distance.

It's like holding onto carbs instead of electronic fuel injection. Yeah carbs are simple and cheap but they suck in every other way

I did that with my bear gun, a 10mm G40 for bowhunting and scouting. But in certain conditions outside, natural light can be problematic with an optic, as can lint, rain and other conditions that do not impact iron sights. It think it's fair to say both have their advantages and disadvantages.https://photos.fife.usercontent.goo...CqFeMN5BZpFgBrZp=w480-h853-s-no-gm?authuser=0

Checkout enclosed red dots like my Trijicon RCR. They aren't affected by lint or rain

The ACRO was installed on a Vang Comp 12ga pump. If you hate the sight picture right off the bat you dump it in favor of something you do like. That's just common sense. Tried an SRO on shotguns too but ultimately found my accuracy best without a RDS. The SRO sight picture was much bigger and more natural than the ACRO which was smaller and slower to sight with. In a self defense weapon that's not good.

Maybe an unfair reason but the DeltaPoint RDS in my two backcountry guns have a huge sight picture and I have burned thousands of rounds using em. Yes, I replaced the barrels. :)

I also have done digital training with irons and RDS on the same weapon and on moving targets my accuracy using both was comparable...very slight difference. I can hit steel at 100 yards with the 10mm & RDS shown in the link above. But that's for OWB, in the field. For around town I am comfortable with iron sights to 25 yards...that's when the RDS improves my groupings. But it's unlikely I will be shooting at someone that far away as a CCW holder. At 25 yards I'm looking for cover first, shooting second. So I can argue it back and forth.

RDS is awesome for lowlight, Even over tritium irons

We should start requiring $1 payments for posts related to:
- dot vs irons
- one in chamber vs not
- manual safety vs no safety
- AIWB vs anything else
- WML or not
- carrying spare mag vs no spares

What else am I missing? 😂
Not just a dollar. Cases of beer! This is exhausting palaver
I have two radical things to say:
1) my most accurate shooting with my iron sighted Les Baer. At 25y i am able to make headshots and decent groups with my blurry a s s eyes. Yes folks over all my striker and 1911 optics equiped guns.

2). I was about to take off the iron sights on one of my 2011 Ccw pistols. Haha! This will drive people crazy. Im rolling the dice people ! I also take the tags off mattresses and pillows Haha. I love iron sights until they get in the way lol.

3). Bonus point. Trírium equpped irons are lame. Yes your honor i shot my neighbor bc i thought he was a prowler. Oh i didn’t use a light, i just shot in the dark bc i have trịtium irons on my gun. Ok yes i did shoot without properly identifying my target.

Sidearms for bowhunting have co-witnessed Hawkins suppressor sights but these are full size sidearms. Selecting where to add an optic to compact or subcompact sidearm without hands-on experience is not how I prefer to learn. So I'm hoping that somebody who deals with lots of CCW permit holders (a trainer) who has seen and worked with optics on smaller guns will chime in.
Hopefully AB-1912 will pass so we can carry a sidearm during archery deer season in California.

Have you shot in the dark with a WML or handheld without night sights? The light hitting the smoke can make non-tritium irons very difficult to see.

Frustrated with my vision, red dots have been awesome, even up close.

Being nearsighted, with my glasses on the front sight is a blur with zero ability to center the front post vertically or horizontally. I do my best approximates. Groupings are a theory. If I shoot without my glasses, the front sight is clear but the target is a blur. The groups up close get much better but once out to 7~10 yards, it's hard to aim small miss small when the target is blurry before I even raise my pistol. A red dot with my glasses removes that issue. See the target, bring the dot to my eyes, pull the trigger. My groups still suck as I'm a lousy shot, but even at 7 yards they are much tighter and no slower.

You know you're an asshat when you decide to help your buddy...the guy who cannot hit the center of his target and drill it with 4 shots.
