Red Dot Sight and astigmatism problems.

So just thinking out loud, there's at least an RMR based option that might work. While It's still an LED emitter it has an entirely different target set up - the Holosun 507c ACSS Vulcan (I have 2 and they are excellent).

The reticle has two elements: a large (250 MOA) outer circle that acts as a centering guide, and a 10 MOA center chevron with a 0.5 MOA tip as the precision aiming point. When your eye is properly centered on the optic, the outer ring phases out of the window entirely and you see only the chevron. When you're off-center, a portion of the outer ring appears, instantly telling you which direction to adjust your presentation.

A single LED dot gives your astigmatic eye one point of light to smear. This is a chevron which means you are using a shape — edges, angles, a defined tip. The chevron's tip measures just 0.5 MOA. The eye resolves shapes and edges better than point sources especially impacting people with astigmatism.

Isn’t the Chevron the ACSS holosun made with Primary Arms? Those worked great for my astigmatism. I wish they made more of them that would direct mount on my PDP and VP9A1 pistols

For me, your standard Sig Romeo5 red dot on rifles, I see the main center dot and to the lower left, I will see another one. So, obviously I use the center one. I have many rifles with these type of dots and other with prism red dots like PA or 2x or 3x, and those work fine for me. Just about any prism will. I can see a mile away, but need readers for phone, computers, etc. For pistols, I am great with just iron sights and since most Caniks and other nicer pistols have a fiber optic front sight, i have no issues. Even with 3 dot white sights, I am good to go. What works even better are some of the raised irons. I have tried red dots on pistols before, and just did not work for my eyes/vision. No problem, since using irons for so many years and can shoot very well.

So, been shooting for 30+ years with military, civilian, competitive, tactical, blah, blah, etc experience; so not a new shooter is what I’m saying.

With rifle or pistol iron sights I am fast and accurate even with my astigmatism, But I suck ass with a red dot. I finally figured out my astigmatism is messing with my sight picture. The red dot blows out, becomes “star like”, blurry, can’t focus, etc.

Anyone else experience this who has an astigmatism? I have researched online the issue and I want to really give red dots a try, but damn if it’s not frustrating with eye problems.


Also, doesn’t matter what Red Dot I try, eotech, Sig M17 sight, Meprolight M21, Holloson, etc

I have an astigmatism too. I have learned to just work with the star. Some dots are crisp though. Just look through a bunch until you find one that works for you.

I am having the same issue. I have been meaning to get an eye exam and then see what they say. If it’s something that could be fixed with glasses great if not I’ll go the contact route. Not ideal but i am not having luck with finding a dot that works

I’ve had all the green ones. And the 509 red. If they make one as the successor to the 507Comp, I would buy that and just find a way to get a VP9 RMR footplate.

Try 407 comp in green. That would work well for you, 507 comp too small (no need for extra circles) and red dots create burst. My 407 comp is bold and crisp vs my sro 5 moa red dot and my 507 comp. I have astigmatism also.

Had a 507c green and was bad for me also. I’ll have to try a look through the 407

thats the thing about the Holosun that I mentioned. The Vulcan ACSS 507C "red dot"....its not a dot, so it will be much friendlier to your astigmatism. It comes in red or green.

Get a holographic sight, also can’t you get eye surgery or glasses for that? I have 20/10 vision but sometimes get a minor starburst if it’s bright and in low light. Normal light it’s a dot

Yeah and it would be a great option for someone with astigmatism

I have astigmatism and while I have noticed some blurring/star lights when I first turn it on, once I focus on my target I find that it clears up or worst case I turn up the brightness and its good then. I also notice it more when using the small 2 MOA dot vs the bigger 32MOA circle/dot combo but I don't know if that is because my eyes focus on the smaller dot a lot harder.

I would go to a store with a bunch of different options and see if any of the options vibe with you. I struggled with red but green for some reason is a bit easier for me, I haven't tried the gold options but I would imagine those are even softer than red.

Yeah honestly I didn’t even notice on the big dot but as soon as I got the small one on a pistal I thought the dot was defective. Honestly as soon as I get to the range I don’t even notice it. Maybe mine isn’t as bad as some.

Is there a big difference between glasses and contacts? I got my first glasses about 9 months ago. I've never tried contacts at all.

I wear contacts. My astigmatism is still significant, and it is not correctable with prescription lenses of any type: glasses, soft contacts, or hard contacts, at the very least.

The green dots are better for me sometimes. Focusing on the target (as I should) and not really looking for the dot at all (presentation being correct) helps. The Primary Arms/Holosun chevron ACSS helps greatly. Unfortunately, only certain models are offered, and I like the SCS direct mounts. All of my RDOs are Holosun. I’ve bought twelve of them so far.
