Red Dot Sight and astigmatism problems.

Is there a big difference between glasses and contacts? I got my first glasses about 9 months ago. I've never tried contacts at all.

I notice a big difference, but everybody’s eyes are different. I also had lasik surgery 15+ years ago that helped my tism. My sight has since faded and now wear contacts again

So, been shooting for 30+ years with military, civilian, competitive, tactical, blah, blah, etc experience; so not a new shooter is what I’m saying.

With rifle or pistol iron sights I am fast and accurate even with my astigmatism, But I suck ass with a red dot. I finally figured out my astigmatism is messing with my sight picture. The red dot blows out, becomes “star like”, blurry, can’t focus, etc.

Anyone else experience this who has an astigmatism? I have researched online the issue and I want to really give red dots a try, but damn if it’s not frustrating with eye problems.


Also, doesn’t matter what Red Dot I try, eotech, Sig M17 sight, Meprolight M21, Holloson, etc

I hear green can be better for those that astigmatism. Mine was pretty bad but recently got LASIK for my vision and it’s much better now.

thats the thing about the Holosun that I mentioned. The Vulcan ACSS 507C "red dot"....its not a dot, so it will be much friendlier to your astigmatism. It comes in red or green.

For some reason the ACSS chevron is awful with my astigmatism, worse than a dot. I tried green as well. An SRO with the large dot is much better but still blooms with corrective glasses. Contacts are better.

If you have stigmatism use a green dot not red. For pistols

Also if use a Holographic optics (eotech, or vortex huey) its still workable on rifles. You might need to get a prism or LPVO.

Unfortunately at the moment more interested in trying to find a pistol RDO that works. Red/green dot doesn’t make a noticeable difference to my eyes.

You can try holosun eps green. Depending on the severity of your astigmatism might work.

I had acss 507 I swapped it for 509T green and I was able to clearly see the difference in any brightness.

Red/green color challenge d so not so much the color of dot tbh.

Interesting, good to know everyone is different. Currently have rmrhd and I can see fine with slight burst

If I turn it down low enough, the effect is minimized. The brighter I go the worse it gets.

Just going to keep trying I guess to the point I overcome it or ditch it all together. Thanks peeps for sharing your experience.

I had one and used a sig romeo sig 1 pro i think moa was 2.5 or 1. It worked fine and honestly loved the combo.

Whats your moa on the dot?

I bought a M18 USMC contract slide (Absence of “P320” on slide and RDO mounting holes different) and the Sig M17 RDO to convert my SIG P320 M18 into a true clone. The SIG M17 RDO does not work on commercial slides (Unless you have machine work done).

That's normal, more intense light is harder for your eye to resolve. Green works for some people because they can perceive the dot easier at lower brightness.

I have horrible eye sights (-5.25 in both eyes, I enjoy wearing my glasses)

Maybe try a prism optic. For my 14.5 rifle I switched one of my EXPS for a Primary Arms SLx Microprism 3x. It's so clear and my eyes doesn't struggle focusing. I've become a better shooting with my prism vs my other rifle with a Eotech.

As for a pistol I just ended taking my red dot off (Sig Romeo X Compact, Also pretty clear vs say an RMR) and feel i'm okay with my irons

The solution was that I also had cataracts. Getting a new lens helped immensely, but unfortunately my sight in that eye is still pretty bad. Green does help more.
