Are you able to draw from the holster (OWB, IWB or AIWB) at their range if you become a member? I'm looking for options to get some draw reps at but it's hard to find a place thats either close to us (Vallejo) or that even allows it. I'm a member at Sacramento Gun Club but they don't allow appendix draw. The Gun Range in North Highlands allow appendix draw but they can be busy from time to time. Those are the only 2 ranges that I know of that allows it.
If you're in Vallejo, Concord is very close to you too. You have to take the concord intro class or another equivalent, and then the holster draw practices are during the Action Pistol practice times - Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. You can see times here for "AP - DAP practice" (action pistol range, run by diablo action pistol) https://unitedsportsmen.com/usi-event-calendar/

I’ve gone to USI on a few Saturdays. It’s steel challenge and one USPSA stage. RRGC has a static range with plate rack and steel plates. You can do draw drills , Bill drills , doubles , whatever. Not so much from what I see at DAP. RRGC also has a practice stage. You can practice your draw to first shot at DAP in Steel Challenge.

Agreed, I really wish that there was a lane that was just for draw / doubles practice at DAP.

If you just tell the RO at one of the steel stages that’s what you want to do they’re usually fine with it.

I’ve done Bill drills, doubles and many others. They’ll still time you if you’d like.

My husband and I are new to handgun ownership. Aside from some shooting experience growing up (mostly rifles and shotguns with family - I also took hunter ed. but that was a long time ago), we haven’t had any formal training and would really like to get proper private instruction.

We’re located in San Francisco and would love to eventually apply for membership at Richmond Rod & Gun Club, so training that aligns well with range safety and fundamentals would be great.

We’re a gay couple and would prefer an instructor who is clearly comfortable and open to working with us. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I have to say in my experience, no one cares you are gay. What rubs people the wrong way, is not being safe. There are guys who compete USPSA in dresses and no one blinks. But if you do something careless that endangers others , you will get everyone’s attention.

You don’t have to be a club member to take a class at either Richmond or Concord. T-3 Pros have beginner classes (PP1), and there are people who also teach one hour classes at the public range but T-3 Pros is much more fun. It’s not one on one. It’s a group setting with James and other excellent instructors. You will jump in knowledge and skill level faster with them than other classes that don’t give you much.

The website has a contact form and James is a really nice guy who is an excellent instructor. He has studied with some of the best in the country, many who no longer teach and gives that knowledge to you. It’s pretty welcoming and no one is judging on skill level .

I’m happy to put you in touch with some instructors. I am active at RRGC on static, action, and skeet ranges, feel free to reach out.
