If you’ve been considering putting a bull barrel on your Ruger 10/22, I ran a side-by-side test at 25 yards to see what kind of accuracy improvement you can expect.
Will you even see a difference at such short distance?
Please keep in mind I was shooting off of a bag, and standing up while shooting. If I were sitting down with a more stable shooting platform (bipod or shooting rest) the groups would be tighter.
Both have factory triggers that have been polished, otherwise completely stock.
Here’s what I found:
Tighter groups: Even with cheap bulk pack ammo, the bull barrel produced noticeably more consistent groups than the factory barrel at 25 yards.
Better performance with match ammo: Accuracy improves even further when using better quality ammo. This was still bulk pack Federal Auto Match, so not super high end.
Budget considerations: A bull barrel upgrade might require a compatible stock or modifications to your current stock, which can add more cost.
Bottom line: If you want improved accuracy and consistency from your 10/22, a bull barrel is a solid upgrade, even for shorter-range shooting. Just factor in potential stock adjustments if you don’t already have a compatible setup.
TLDR: Bull barrels tighten groups, are reliable, and can be affordable, definitely worth considering if you want to step up your 10/22 accuracy performance.
