In fact they can be worse, because the state gives them a baked-in advantage with all the legal requirements to use them. And they know it. Frequently their attitudes reflect that.

That's kind of funny. I never thought the State gave me much of an advantage. $10 PPTs, expensive video equipment, expensive insurance requirements, threat of loss of license or worse for what would be a minor issue for other retailers, required to collect sales tax (and excise tax) on out of state purchases through other retailers, .... Personally, I think the State has us all (dealers and customers) over a barrel. Not saying any of this to justify shady dealings. Just sayin being an FFL in CA is not walk in the park.

I respect your opinion, and do not doubt any of it.
However, when the citizen is required by law to do certain transactions through a FFL, as opposed to simple cash & carry, it sets up a situation that I doubt the founders of our country ever envisioned.
I would rather not waste your time in your business by conducting PPT’s, purchasing ammo, or for that matter purchasing guns if I could simply web/mail order them and have all of it delivered directly, as was done in the past. I get it how the Feds and the state force you to maintain expensive licenses, permits, etc. Not many other businesses have to go through all those hoops, and it isn’t right. But, to be fair to FFL’s I have used in the past, if I’m going to conduct a PPT as required by law, I always purchase a new gun through that FFL, and hope they can make something off it. That I guess is fair. Ammo I never buy, as I have other means.

No. Don't Do It. Too many gun dudes have no sense of humor at all.

Gun stores are essentially run like pawn shops. If you walk into one expecting them to do you any favors, you will be sorely dissatisfied.

On the flip side, they are running a business, and turning a profit is without a doubt priority one. The shops that can do that and maintain customer satisfaction are probably the same places that stay in business for decades.
