Shot timer

Thinking of buying a shot timer for casual use for live fire holster drills. Maybe dryfiring. Recommendations?

I use SG Timer GO. Works well for both live and dry fire. Easy to use especially with the app but you really can’t go wrong with any shot timer out there.

Depends on how many bells and whistles you want, and how much cash you want to spend.

You’ve got options like the SG Shot Timer 2, Kestrel, AMG Global, CED 7000, or the classic Pocket Pro / ProTimer style units. The older ones may not be fancy, but they’re durable, cheaper, and they work.

Plenty of the best shooters in the country got to their level using sub-$100 timers, so I wouldn’t overthink it too much.

Note: I had the Pact, CED, PocketPro and now the SG 2. That said, if I am dry firing and wanted to keep it simple, I just use an iOS app ShootOnTime that allows configurable Par times.

Depends what you want to use it for.

For actually capturing shots? Not very reliable, in my experience. For dry practice and configurable par times? Yes, absolutely. I use one called ShootOnTime on iOS.

The SG Timer 2 is the most bang for the buck, however a bit more complicated for some of the "smart" features/

It has companion, "Drills" app for your phone as well. Best if you want to save your drills and reference them later.

Additionally, you can video record yourself (or others) and have your shots synced to the video.

Personally, especially with the sale from a week or two ago, I think the SG2 gives you more functionality than the Edge.


That said, at Max Michel’s Pro Shooter Experience in Vegas, the instructor cadre - Max, Doug, and JJ, all have their own shot timer preferences: Edge, Kestrel, and SG, respectively.

So yeah… apparently even the pros can’t agree. LOL.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s better. It just has more bells and whistles.

Like I mentioned above, a lot of the top shooters in the country got to their level using old-school shot timers, so I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in the gear side of it.

PS: I also have, well, had, a ProTimer, but I passed it on to my kid. I now have an SG2. I also had an AMG, which I sold to get the SG2. I had a CED 7000 too, but that thing was flimsy and I eventually broke the buttons from dry practice.
