Feedback Should we limit political posts

Why bother to have forums at all then? Riddle me that. And while we’re at it, let’s get rid of the California politics too, because they go hand in hand. If you ban one, then you have to ban the other, it’s only fair. I’ve ignored my share of people here, and I’m sure they’ve ignored me, but that shouldn’t mean we do away with discussions just because you don’t like the direction they go or because someone likes someone you don’t.

Opt in Politics forum is my vote, limited moderation with volunteer mods specific to that section.

I can set this one up. It would be nice to move it off the front page and keep it clean again. Opt in would bring it back into the feed instead of opt out.

The forum site is growing, better to grow than limit.

gun forums banning political discussion when the feds just built a fed police force with a bigger budget than the United States marine corps and is openly telling them to ignore the constitution seems itself a very political statement. I can’t fathom how these topics can be separated.

And our style of "discussing" politics is throwing insults at each other ...
Then we can't discuss gun control law, in particular not California laws, and how to make our situation better in this state.

Because any mention of a gun control law will cause people to go off claiming a variety of political things, for example that it's all libtards faults, no it's all Reagan's fault, no Trump will fix it all with his sharpie, no Trump is the problem not the solution, and so on.

We could try to educate forum members to try to discuss gun control laws and politics in a civil manner, without insults, without over-generalizations, without throwing accusations. And punish anything that lacks decorum with temporary or permanent bans, or having posts deleted or redacted. I actually think that it would take remarkably little effort by admins and moderators, because (a) a lot of posters would get banned very quickly, and (b) the remainder would learn to be polite.

Note that the above remarks are only about gun law, legislation, regulation, and politics. Generalizing that to discussion of other politics (immigration, taxation, abortion, ...) is very unlikely to work with the people present here, and should not be attempted, except in a very isolated and sterile cleanroom.

I think gun politics are distinct from general politics, or should be. Gun politics are based on evidence and as gun-owners we have little disagreement there. It's good to know the challenges to 2A and the ever-changing landscape as it affects the rights of gun-owners in California.

That's different from generic political ranting, and I think could be contained well enough by the mods. To some extent we have this already, but an explicit decision would have to be made to keep the genie of divisive political and ideological battles in the bottle.

In my personal opinion, as I cannot speak for anyone besides myself, that I would love going to a forum pure of my specific interests, in this case is our 2A.
When we open the door to political discussion, it is also when people who care about legal gun ownership are unintentionally divided; and in my experience, political division is the worst and most difficult division to overcome.

As you mentioned, may be considering gun unrelated topics such as stocks/precious metal, job posts, or "other hobbies" section would benefit more to our community, where everyone had a place to potentially make more friends than going to sleep with a frustration.

Keep it open, keep the division. If you don’t want any part of it, don’t click on the thread. No different than television channels. It’s called free will. Exercise it before those on this forum who would strip you of it (among other things) do just that.

I think it’s still pretty evenly divided. We’ll do opt in split off politics from current events. I think opt in is a good compromise. We have several technical options and create a disclaimer pop up once you opt in.

This goes for everyone, if you don’t like Democrats keep it to yourself. If you don’t like Trump, same thing.

Some people’s disdain for political parties can be a bit much.

You have the ignore feature to block users posts and/or you can opt out of current events in your preferences… you are given multiple options to choose from

We are all here because we especially despise California gun laws. I think we should make a rule and stick with California politics relating to guns.

I like a good spirited knowledgeable discussion. That's how we all got here, by talking, not by keeping quiet.

I have no use for personal insults and ad hominum attacks. We are better than that or at least we should be.

I tend to agree, unfortunately. I have never met a liberal, progressive, left leaning democrat, what ever they identify as, that I could have an adult conversation with concerning politics. This being a firearms forum, anything 2A related should be on here.

To be fair it’s 3/10 and 1 is asking about whether or not to keep it.

It’s gonna take a little time to setup the opt in mechanism.

To mods feel free to move any posts to the politics sub to remove it from the main feed that I missed.

So, will all political comments as well as posts be moved to that forum or will it only be posts and comments that illustrate problems with the current administration?
