When I was a kid, I used what he used on his .22 rifle. I’d rub it into the stock as well. He used automatic transmission fluid.

Oh man, I don't even have that nor would I use it. I'm an EV guy and a Dapper Dan man, lol!

I like Lucas Oil Extreme Duty Gun Cleaner, but find that it leaves a white, dried residue everywhere. I usually follow it up with Breakthrough All-in-one CLP - it's clear and non-greasy. A quick spray with a dry rag and I'm back in action.

Personally, I would not use a solvent or WD-40 for just a wipe down as they could Rob your finish of any protectant it might have.I usually use a little REM oil for a quick wipe down but any good CLP should work.

As stated, a solvent dissolve other things. I have used gas as a solvent to remover grease from equipment parts and remove old grease from bearings to repack. Plus, it is cheaper than buying a specific solvent and it readily available on the farm.
Not recommending you use gas. I use CRC Brake cleaner, a solvent, in pressurized can with the red nozzle when cleaning guns because it blasts almost all the gunk out of the gun and evaporates fast. Then follow up with CLP to finish cleaning and lubing. Of course, you will need to apply some protectant on the barrel after brake cleaner. I have also used CRC Power Lube (red cannister) to clean guns and for a quick lube and a coating on guns when in the house because my wife has a very sensitive nose.
Example, I can come home from changing oil, working on hydraulics or greasing equipment and she is 2 rooms over and smell what i have been into.

What are you putting this on? like blued guns and classics. renaissance wax is the stuff. Other guns, ive used a variety of stuff. smell of #9 makes me sick. Ive used super thin smige of frog lube paste. Switched over to Seal1 as it has a similar consistency but in bigger tubes. thin tiny amount is enough to prevent rust and keeps guns lubed.

This may have already been mentioned, but you should not use solvent and then store your gun. Always wipe it down with some type of oil before storing it.

It doesn’t really matter. Whatever you have will work.

FYI, solvents remove protective oils which is not what you want when storing a gun.

I have Break-Free CLP and Lucas Oil Extreme Duty.

FP10, Break-Free CLP, and Tetra Action Blaster for the interior.

If you have an AR or AK, and have a large laundry sink of sort, best cleaner is full water blast max temperature, dishwasher detergent, and then blow dry, then CLP, put away wet of oil.

I can’t smell them once they’re in the safe. I use whatever gun oil that is on sale or cheap. I like a good oil wipe down. I get some rust around metal sights and screw heads with a silicone cloth.
