Son left weapon

My son left a Walther PDP with me (without me knowing) during a visit in late April. He's in Washington state, I'm in California. Any ideas on how to either take ownership or sell it?

Pretty sure it’s illegal for you to take your son’s gun and sell it. Did he give permission?

What is the law that requires a gift letter and ID copy?

Have you contacted your son and asked why he left it? If you don't own a safe, buy a cable lock and unload it, keep it safely stored away until he can take ownership in-person again, or can arrange an FFL to box and ship it to his local FFL in Washington.

just remember that sentiment in case you ever loose something valuable and the finder has the same sentiments as you.

This form would be if the son was a CA resident. This transfer must go thru a FFL with a gift letter.

I’m not a lawyer and don’t really recommend you do this but I can offer up what my grandfather did on many occasions despite me telling him not to.

My grandfather, who is now deceased, would always just do face to face transactions then file a vol reg form. His justification for this was it was $35 for DROS at a gun shop and $19 for the vol reg document. I was telling him he was just telling on himself over and over again and his thought process was the state just wants to know the disposition of the weapon. I thought he’d get in trouble but he did it like 20 times and nothing ever came from it. This wasn’t that long ago. He just passed in 2022.

If you call the CADOJ they will say you can do this.... you are not breaking state law...you are breaking Federal (ATF) law. Very rare to get in trouble with ATF but still not advisable.

I think it is illegal which is why I’m saying it’s not a good idea. I’m just saying he did it all the time to save the measly $11 and I couldn’t believe DOJ never did anything to him. Anecdotally though, his statement that he felt DOJ didn’t care they just wanted a current disposition on the firearm appears to be true, as they never did anything about it. Maybe they didn’t want to prosecute an old man? Maybe there’s no system that cross references these documents to say “hey this guy does one of these forms every 6 months for 10 years”? I’m just sharing information

Yep, If I ever leave my gun out of state I will definitely remember this sentiment.
