Seeking opinions: I have handguns that sit in the safe for 3-4 months without being handled, being shot. Should I protect them/ oil them differently than those that get shot more frequently? I always clean them after use

Not if it's properly temperature/humidity controlled. Both the room it's in but also things as simple as not storing in foam containers, silica packets (preferably the ones that change color when fully saturated), etc.

The coatings on the parts also make a difference on how well it does, but most modern handguns with nitride, DLC, cerakote, etc. shouldn't be an issue.

I have a 19 that I dont carry anymore that's in my cabinet should I leave it out of the foam glock case if I plan to store it long term? I never thought about humidity playing a factor for me until now

I don’t advise storing any guns in cases. Seems like every time I see someone with rust issues they say they had it in a case in the safe.

I’ve got a couple of revolvers that are 35+ years old and look almost new. Just a normal cleaning and a wipe down with whatever gun oil is handy every time they go to the range, or every year or so if they’re getting ignored.

Moisture is the enemy, just clean and lube and use those moisture absorbing packets

Sometimes its more the specific firearm.... Ive seen things rust out in a few months (remingtons) and things go years (glocks)

Where I live, rust is not an issue at all. As such, I don’t need to do anything. If I did, I’d look into desiccants for the safe. I know Breakfree CLP had a version for longer storage as I have a bottle of it laying about somewhere.

Thanks ill prob remove it from the case and just leave it locked with the lock thing

For safe queen's, I'll leave the gun "wet" post cleaning- far more lubricant than an in-service gun. Desicant is cheap and widely available thanks to Bezos, if you have a humid environment- bake your desicant (@200 degrees is fine) pacs 2-4 times a year.

One of my pistols has been in a gunvault drop safe with foam for years, I checked today and seems to have no issues. Im guess since its a thin metal like my gun cabinet it doesn't store humidity?

Military armories are typically maintained at no more than 40% relative humidity to prevent corrosion on weapons. Humidity above 50-60% risks rust and mold.

Three or for months is nothing. Clean your guns, wipe them in gun oil, silicone rag, or whatever is appropriate. Don't leave fingerprints. A quick wipe-down every year is ok, but don't go MANY years without attending to them. Maybe every few years do a more thorough cleaning and re-lubing.

If you're in a low-humidity environment like where I live, don't give it any more thought. If you're concerned, get an off-the-shelf heater that's made for the inside of gun safes. If you're a technical sort of guy with a bunch of parts sitting on your shelf, get a tube resistor and wire it across a 120 vac cord. Do the math, and shoot for something that gives you 10 - 25 Watts.

the only gun Ive ever had that rusted was a remington 870 and I coated it in alumahyde. Modern coatings work really well. Older guns with bluing don't have the same protection and require oiling and attention.
