What hammer fired handgun would you buy for around $1,000

92FS probably the worst option considering the expense and jankiness with milling for a red dot. He’s gonna be well over a grand all in

Cheapest and best way is to probably pickup a used p226 for like $600 and buy an optic ready slide
SP-01 has lower bore axis 😂

Doesn’t matter. 2011 has a higher bore axis and smokes it. Bore axis is not that important
I would actually say they shoot very similar if they weigh the same the CZs are actually really nice and don't really lose in performance to a 2011 except for maybe the trigger but it's debatable. Similarly a 40oz p226 would be not far off. Not the same but the bore axis isn't the most important thing for shootability.

Don’t have p226, but have 2011, Staccato P4.5, 92, PX4 and SP-01. I like 2011 best, with SP-01 close 2nd . Very very close 2nd

Used P226 for $600? Maybe a few years age (IMHO).

+1 for P226. Also maybe the HK P2000. I don't have experience with it, but I hear good things and no one's mentioned it.
He said range toy so you figured something all tricked out. But you should be able to get a P2000 and a slide cut for about a grand. Maybe less if you get a local PPT at a fair price, a few I tried to buy on gunbroker went stupid over a grand before the fees and taxes.

The P2000 is sadly no longer manufactured

why do you say it's a mistake?
Because then you have a full size gun with oniy options for small dots. There is one weird dot made by shield that's a larger window but in general you would be relegated to CCW sized optics.

Tbh I don’t mind defender ccw on sp-01, maybe because I started with smaller dots and didn’t get bigger windows until 2-3 years later

Fair enough. So not a mistake, but a preference issue.

I think RMSc suites the 1911, HiPower, and 75B narrow slides. It's a common cut with many options.

Yeah I think I care less about the window size now that I can index well but if you have a choice it's definitely nicer to have a bigger one, and it also effects resale value. I don't know why wager doesn't do dpp on those though, they do it on Glocks

Hold up. I just reread OP's original post: What hammer fired handgun would you buy for around $1,000..."would", not could. That changes everything!
For starters, probably one of these:
- P226-X Agency-Thanks Gawernator
-
PX4 Compact Carry 2 by LTT
- CZ Shadow 2
- CZ Shadow 2 Compact
...haha

Limiting to a small window on a full size “range toy” gun makes zero sense
