This is correct, but the amount of "slop" and "leeway" allowed in those fundamentals is the difference.

3" at 300 yards is still a CNS.

6" at 600 yards is a wing and a miss

But its not inches, its MOA. A 2 moa shooter at 100 is 2.098". At 100 yards there is no significant drop (most rounds are still in the critical zone) so a shooter can take a zero'd rifle and make a hit without knowing dope at all. . The same shooter at 500 is 10.49" plus you have to factor in an average elevation correction of 12 MOA. Then there is wind which rarely amounts to much within 100 yards.

Try 1 MOA at 500, then 1000yds. I love watching Texas Plinking on Youtube with the 1 MOA at 1000yd challenge. It is a real eye opener on how wind and conditions impact different cartridges at that distance.

In my experience it was easy to make consistent hits on a 12" target with a scoped AR running 77gr 556 ammo at almost 600yds in favorable conditions. When conditions got pretty challenging it got hard to make consistent hits on a 2/3 IPSC target. Yet an 6 ARC upper was still able to hit things easily at 600yds in the same conditions. Just wished there were more long range places close to the bay area to take my new setup.

Neither would I. Past 800yds the 556 seems to get blown around like a 22.

Yeah you have to sign up through practiscore but anyone can sign up. It's through ncpprc if you sign up for their forum they have info on their practices and matches
