Killed a boar last year at 425 yards, coached by my guide, I nailed the shot. All of my shots prior to that were within 200 yards. I'm comfortable with a rest out to 499, standing or kneeling with no rest, about 200. Just shot a boar 2 weeks ago at 175 yards, kneeling no rest. I always feel the need to practice and keep dialed in otherwise I'll lose it.

I regularly shoot at 600yds at ASR, and have hit 900yds in BLM. This is with an R700, MDT Oryx chassis, and a cheap blackhound 6-24x scope with cheap factory ammo. I think because I started shooting rifles at a young age, 500-600 yds feels fairly normal to me at least target shooting/plinking. Anything beyond that and I feel like i'm just lobbing rounds with 308 lol.

Even if I have the rifle to do it, I don't think I have the skills to hit 1moa at 600 yards lol

Why not?
Start shooting smaller targets.
Instead of shooting at the hanging ram, shoot at the foot of the ram.
If you hit left, right or low, you will be able to spot your miss in the dirt.
The key to shooting it spotting exactly where the shot went and then correcting as needed.

I can hit common 4" clay pigeons at 875yds.
After you hit them and they break into 3-4 pieces, I can still break those pieces up again.

One mile seems like the new 1,000 meters when it comes to ‘long range’ nowadays.

But 600 and over is long range for me.

1. My muscle control isn't as good as when I was younger. Fine trigger control is a lot harder because of that.
2. Budget. These days I'd rather put money on training my kids. They'll have to pickup where I left off.

Hit the 750 yard ram at KRVGA last weekend 7 out of 11 attempts but the first couple were to verify the drop for my ballistics calculator on two rifles. First was an Aero Precision 6.5 Grendel with a 20” barrel and a Viper PST FFP 5-25x50. Second was a Remington 700 in 22-250 with a 4-16x44 Viper SFP. Both with hand loads. Didn’t know the patch was a thing until the range master mentioned it. Kinda cool. Haven’t shot past 750 but hope to get to Piru soon as they have out to 1000.

I ended my hunting season today. Stopped off at KRVGA on my way home. Someone was there and they mentioned this patch. I want to get this. I didn't sight my rifle in this year. So it was still on last year's dope and I humped it all around the forest this year and last year. I have never shot at 750 before. I did however shoot 500 yards iron sights in the USMC. I have a Remington 783 .308 with a vortex crossfire. Shooting barns copper 150 grain. My rifle was doped at 100 yards. I didn't have enough reticules but I imagined 2 more and sent it. Lights flashing on my first shot. Felt good. I did it a few more times and left with a smile.

Depends what you're shooting. 22lr? Two and Three hundred are pretty long. My 300 RUM is very good out at a mile. I'm getting close to putting a 338 Edge barrel on it, after a couple hundred more rounds though. The ELR guys in Mendo county regularly are shooting to 2500 and 3000.

600yds for NRA Highpower, and 800/900/1K for the occasional Palma matches.

I think it is all category specific are we talking pistol i would say 100 yards which doable even with irons is still long range.
AR/AK systems 600 plus would be long range providing yiu are using irons or dot only. Adding an LPVO or ranged scope then ups the ante.

Bolt rifle caliber .300 winmag, .270 win .308 or 6.5 creed has to be 1000+ yards.anything inside 700 yards with those is routine.

Hunted deer for 4 years before taking a long-range shooting class, from an instructor named Darrell shooting out to 750 yards prone hitting a 10x12 inch steel target. This was September 2012 then went to hunt with friend in November. Stepped out his back door and there was a herd of deer about 400 yards out. He asked if I felt confident enough to try. Scoped them and said no not yet. The longest shot I got a deer so far is a white tail buck @ 270. Longest shot I have had on prairie dogs with bolt action 223 has been 400 yds from shooting bench. Prairie dog exterminating was after long range shooting class.

To me, the break down is 300-600 for intermediate and 600+ for long range. I've got witnessed hits on 24" steel at a mile but only with a 25% hit rate. 200yd at my local range is boring with 2 of my rifles. I don't think I'd hunt over 3-400yd though for big game though.

Beyond the obvious depends which firearm retort I'd say the point at which I really start having to think a lot is the distinction for long distance.

I have to think a lot harder at 600 yards than 500 so I generally tend to think of 500 and in as effective, and 600+ as long range.

To be honest this all seems a little arbitrary though the fundamentals are largely the same at any range.

This is correct, but the amount of "slop" and "leeway" allowed in those fundamentals is the difference.

6" at 600 yards is a wing and a miss
