On a Thursday night, while clearing from a traffic stop at the Charter Way off-ramp, the officers observed a vehicle driving the wrong way up the off-ramp before making a U-turn. They quickly initiated an enforcement stop and immediately recognized signs of alcohol impairment. As they continued their investigation, they observed a firearm tucked into the driver's waistband. The driver was arrested and booked into San Joaquin County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol, being a felon in possession of an unregistered handgun with no serial number and possessing a high-capacity magazine.
The following night, while proactively patrolling the area, Officers Mejia and Dowie conducted another enforcement stop for a Vehicle Code violation. During the stop, they observed two firearms in plain view on the vehicle's floorboard. Their investigation led to the seizure of an unregistered handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine, and an AR-15-style rifle with a high-capacity magazine and no serial number. One adult and two juveniles were arrested and booked into the appropriate detention facilities on related charges.

I dunno if it’s because I’m a weirdo, but whenever I get a gun case, it makes me smile a little if the firearm is something cool or exotic, as opposed to the typical KelTechs or Polymers I usually see seized.

They get "destroyed" but they also seem to end up staying with the cops

Depends.

We’ve kept unusual seized firearms for training purposes.

Ex: We had a seized open-bolt MAC-11 that went into full auto the moment you inserted the mag, haha!! The only way it stopped was when the mag ran out or was removed.

Made a great training demo for field officers on the hazards of handling weapons during arrests, haha!!

And, at least where I worked, NO ONE took any seized firearms home. Just didn’t happen.

Some departments will allow firearms to be destroyed by an FFL. There are specific requirements around receiver cuts but some parts can be salvaged and sold. Sights, grips, scopes, magazines, etc.
