Who carries a single action as their edc?

Just asking who carries a single action (Hi Power, 2011, 1911, etc.) as their every day carry set up.

Cruise to what regular running, and how you find caring that way? Any hint would be great.

Carried the CSX and Sig P238
Felt a little weird at first since I was a little worried about the lighter triggers
But safety and hammer fired on both so eliminates that concern
I stopped carrying them though because I ended up mostly carrying my striker fired options without the safeties and wanted to just have one manual operation

I carry almost exclusively a 2011 and have for many years. When it’s not a 2011 it’s a BG 2.0 CC though.

As far as 2011s, I used to carry a lot more of them in the rotation and they tended to be closer to full size guns than the compacts I gravitate towards now. But, over time I’ve settled on compact carry 2011s that are between 3.75 - 4.25 inch commanders.

My staccato C4X tends to get a lot of mileage as the polymer grip and aluminum frame keeps it light, but I also carry an Atlas Ares regularly, and a handful of other atlases, infinities, and some custom stuff that’s larger when I feel like it or in the winter with a jacket.

I think I’ll probably settle on just the C4X, BG 2.0 CC, and my custom rebuilt Mercier Pistol Works carry 2011 using an old unused Atlas as the donor frame when it comes back to me next year.

Staccatos are a good default choice in my opinion. I like the HDs, but some don’t and prefer the legacy V2 stuff like a C2 or a V3 platform like the 2023/2024 C and CS.

Not a lot of wrong answers as long as you understand what you’re getting into in terms of size, concealement, and maintenance/other quirks. They’re not a great value, but they’re hard to beat when in use.

I have been carrying a 1911 Officers for 25+ years. I actually purchased 3 different 9mm this year thinking I was going to finally switch things up but after 2 weeks, I have returned to my trusty 1911. Watching that famous video of the guy discharging his Glock into his groin made really question my choice.
I have never had an accidental discharge nor has it ever mis-fired. I guess I just trust the grip and manual safeties more than the trigger dongle on the modern striker guns...that's just me though.
The more I think about it, "accidental discharge" was not a term until striker fired guns became the rage. Back in the day we called it stupidity because the only way you're going to get a revolver or most hammer guns to discharge is to put your finger on the trigger and pull.

What are your thoughts on carrying a single stack 1911 like a Springfield AOS commander or Dan Wesson TCP?

I think they’re fine. If someone enjoys something and it’s reasonably reliable and they’re competent with it, I think being able to draw and fire shots on target as quickly and accurately as possible outweigh many things like caliber choice or capacity.

That being said, I prefer 2011s as they tend to be more modern, obviously higher capacity, easier to find in 9mm, more of them come in aluminum framed options with polymer or MJD grips, and I actually like having more space for my support hand to make contact with.

A 1911 does carry much more nicely due to the thinness though and they tend to look a lot more classy.

But, if you like it and you shoot it well + you’d carry it as much as possible, why not?

I know a guy who legit carries a 3.5” birdshead Vaquero for his EDC. That was the first thing that popped into mind when you said single action EDC.

Same vein but different - only 1911 carrier I know is 27 years old. Make sense of that for me huh?

I had a Springfield EMP for a minute and it's nice but has the same felt recoil as a polymer gun but a few oz heavier and a (subjectively) worse grip. I can see the appeal if you are committed to iron sights but that's not me. I have fantasized about building a 4" 2011 with the mjd compact grip but I would probably rather build another full size

Kovert just started selling UGW’s recently and I have to assume available via SSE like most of what they offer.

They have the ported 3.8 inch with the MJD grip I think? Might be something of interest, unless you intentionally wanted to tinker with it yourself or something.

those are cool but yeah I want to build it myself, hard to find an aluminum frame in CA though. Can get a short steel cheely fairly easily but then I probably wouldn't want to carry it.

Yup. My problem exactly. Part of the reason my spare Atlas Ares became the aluminum donor frame for my rebuilt custom.

Maybe when the Kimber DS Warrior hits the roster a used one will be cheap enough that you’d feel okay parting it out.

I've actually thought about that, at around 1000 bucks it would be worth it. I'm not sure if you can go 4 inch but you can definitely cut a government slide to 4.25 so could use the slide too potentially. Maybe some day, I'm not in a hurry I actually like my cheap polymer guns for carry. For now haha

My EDC is a NAA .22 Mag SA revolver.

If I’m feeling spicy, I’ll add something else, but my trusty NAA is always with me.

I can’t EDC because I’m in a sensitive place for work most weekdays, but always carry weekends and if I go out weekday evenings. One of my primary carry guns is an EMP.

The redundancy of a thumb and grip safety helped me get confident carrying chambered, especially AIWB, when I first got a CCW. Not sure about others, but it took me a minute to unlearn a lifetime of firearms safety training—i.e., never load and chamber unless you’re at the shooting bench with your muzzle pointed down range.

Regarding the EMP, I think it’s a good choice for EDC/CCW. Capacity is only one less than what’s currently legal. It’s very slim and conceals well. Felt recoil, at least for me, compared to similar sized polymer guns is nothing. But I grew up on a diet of 38 Special +P and 357 Magnum, so basically every 9mm feels mild to me. Grip size can be an issue for guys with bigger hands, but that’s true of any officer size 1911 or similarly sized single stack, I think, and the small grips are part of what helps it conceal so well. But it definitely feels heavy for its size. I got used to that quickly. Overall, the EMP is very much a YMMV type carry gun.

yeah it's definitely a decent choice if you like it
