I’m a huge 40 fan. Always will be. The only Glock 40 cal I don’t have is the 24. Someday, haha!!

That said, I’ve got all the wonder micro 9mm. They really are cool pistols.

And I finally ordered an Echelon too!!

I had my G27.3 slide milled for a green dot. Trying to decide if I want to mill my G23.3 slide. My G35.4 is MOS, went with the Holosun SCS on that one. Such a great shooting pistol!!

Then outside of trap league, I didn’t do much until a few years ago (went a decade without logging on thehighroad or calguns websites). Like you, hibernating for a decade I noticed red dots have really exploded. When it comes to anything new, I try and think if it is really helpful vs. market hype to spend my money. I have a smart phone but passed on a smart watch. For red dots, I am not convinced for inside the home distances or within about 15 yards the offer any real advantage over the XS sights I have on all of my pistols. As such, I have avoided them. I have lots of reps without and a red dots has a slightly different draw stroke and I can’t imagine doing enough to erase what I have done with irons. I will eventually get one on a toy range gun to experiment. For serious self defense work, I will stick with my iron sights. If I were new, I’d totally go with red dots as an everything on the same focal plane is probably a good thing. At this point, too much effort to change.

I had the same thought. Red dots on pistols are not the same as red dots on rifles. It can definitely be argued that in the real world the rifle red dots contribute to survival while red dots on pistols limit overall vision on effective range of the platform. Combat accuracy really is a thing. That being said training is equally important. I’m sure many will disagree. Competition shooting is not combat shooting. It’s better than not training but don’t kid yourself. I think trusting your point shooting ability trumps everything.

One thing I think is absolutely worth mentioning is that dry fire training with a red dot gives you incredible insight of your weaknesses with technique.

Yea, since you hibernated, the FBI supposedly has data to suggest 9 mm is just as good as .40, .357 Sig, 10 mm, .45 ACP. I haven’t seen the data and until I see the data I’m not believing it. Not everyone believes this. Mas Ayoob doesn’t and he’s one of the old guard and I trust him. The one thing I’ve noticed since shooting for a long time is that there are trends. 9 mm cost less, recoils less, and holds more and the FBI says it’s as good as. I think many have just gone this way because of what I have mentioned. I currently have a 9 mm and .45 ACP on my CCW in CA. Evaluating putting a .357 Sig onto the CCW. Having said that, all pistols suck compared to rifles and shotguns in terms of self defense. Pistols just happen to a good concealable size. Louis Awerbuck said “if it (the round) doesn’t come off a fixed air craft he didn’t trust it.” I laugh but there is a bit of truth to that.

By all means get something new if you like, but just because all the newbs and competition shooters are shooting 9mm and optics doesn't mean you have to.

Hahahaha, I'm going through exactly the same thing! I came up shooting IPSC back in the 90s, loading .38 Super on my Dillon 550 for pennies. STI was still STI. .40 was the new do all caliber. The magazine ban happened and shooting wasn't as fun so I sold almost everything.
About 8 months ago I decided to shoot again. I went to Turners to buy some ammo and found out you have to DROS ammo..WTF! To make things even worse, the only gun I kept was my Les Baer from 1990, when you didn't have to register a PPT gun purchase. I couldn't buy ammo because I didn't have a handgun registered at my current address.
STI is now Staccato.
.40 is pretty much dead.
IPSC is gone
Seems like everything is about CCW.
Most shooters now have no idea about .38 Super
And people are willing to pay $1500 for a GLOCK...seriously?
It is definitely Idiocracy.

IPSC and USPSA exist

.38 Super is still a niche caliber, most shooters will not be familiar with it

Next thing will be some sort of 5mm caliber zipping along at 2,500 FPS that throws a six foot fireball.

Speaking of iron warriors, I went to Thunder Ranch in 2015 for Urban Rifle. In the class, there were only two of us using iron sites. I got a special patch from Clint because I used iron sites. Put a smile on my face.
