$250 HK Rebate through August

So? They’re expensive guns, that’s not surprising. My unit carried ancient Sig M11’s so I can’t use HK? That doesn’t make sense
You can do whatever you want, but you asked on a public forum "talk me out of..."

If you didn't actually want folks to talk you out of it then why ask?

I have a few H&K products. None of which would I consider for carry, competition, self defense etc. There are better platforms with much better support from both the OEM & aftermarket.

The reason I brought up competitions is because it's a great testing ground for any platform. If stuff is going to go wrong it will go wrong quickly in competition since you're pushing for maximum speed. I have yet to see a single H&K out there. Glock, CZ, S&W, 2011's, 1911's the occasional Sig or Beretta.

Same for LEO & Military Units. If they were good enough to justify the extra expense they would be a lot more popular than they are.

You have to talk me out of it with good reasons not “they’re too poor so they went with $300 Glocks” lol. That’s just not how militaries and government contracts work. Guns like the MK25, MK23 are just very expensive. You seem to think I’m a military purchaser not an individual 🤣🤣

Nevertheless, HK has a deep military and police background though anyways, they serve that market so hard it’s the bulk of their sales. $192B government contracts vs $133B in civilian sales (2023/2024). So it’s true they’re not really concerned with niche things like competition shoots, they are designing more for premium sales and governments.

In HK’s 2025 audited accounts, 64.6% of revenue came from military customers and another 5.8% from police/government agencies, versus only 29.6% commercial. So roughly 70% of HK’s business is government. HK itself now describes the company as a European NATO “defence contractor,” rather than primarily a consumer gunmaker.

The really big contracts explain why.

  • Germany — G95A1/G95KA1 (HK416A8): 250,000 rifles. This is currently the monster contract. Germany is replacing the G36 with HK416A8-derived G95s. On July 6, 2026, HK announced that the Bundeswehr procurement agency had fully exercised the framework for all 250,000 rifles. First production guns were delivered in December 2025. This alone is a gigantic multiyear production program and probably the most important contract in HK’s current book.
  • France — HK416F: ultimately about 117,000 rifles. France selected the HK416F to replace the FAMAS across its armed forces. The original 2016 procurement was worth about €168 million for more than 100,000 rifles plus equipment, support and training; subsequent orders brought the planned total to about 117,000. Deliveries run through 2028.
  • Germany — MG5: up to 22,672 machine guns. HK’s 7.62×51 MG5 is replacing the MG3. By 2025 HK had delivered its 15,000th MG5, with the overall framework allowing up to 22,672. One large supplementary procurement alone was roughly €175 million for more than 11,000 MG5s.
  • United States Marine Corps — M27 IAR. The M27 is essentially a Marine-specific HK416 derivative. In 2018 the Marines gave HK a five-year contract with a $29.4 million ceiling for up to 15,000 additional M27s, with the first order covering 5,650 rifles. The weapon subsequently became much more than the original squad automatic rifle concept and is now the standard service rifle for much of the Marine infantry.
  • U.S. Army — M110A1 CSASS/SDMR. This is an HK417/G28-family 7.62 rifle. The Army planned approximately 5,000–6,000 M110A1 SDMR systems for distribution through infantry formations. HK itself lists the U.S. Army CSASS/SDMR program among its major contracts.
  • Norway — HK416. Norway was actually the first country to adopt the HK416 as a general-service rifle, rather than merely for special operations. A later 2019 replenishment/expansion order was about 11,000 additional HK416 sets for €22 million. HK still identifies Norway as an important military customer.
  • UK — SA80/L85 modernization. HK doesn't supply the British Army with a wholly new standard rifle, but it has had substantial contracts to rebuild and modernize the L85 into the A3 configuration. The 2019 deal began with £15 million, with options and extensions estimated at another £50 million.

And then there are numerous smaller but still significant G36, HK416, MG4/MG5, MP7, grenade launcher, pistol and support contracts across NATO countries. HK specifically lists France, Norway, Britain, Latvia and Lithuania among important customers alongside the Bundeswehr.

DHS — P2000/P2000SK/USP Compact: up to 65,000 pistols. In 2004 DHS awarded HK a contract worth as much as $26.2 million for up to 65,000 handguns. The chosen guns included the P2000, P2000SK, and USP Compact with LEM triggers. HK described it at the time as the largest U.S. law-enforcement handgun procurement ever.

And it wasn't merely a theoretical ceiling. A later CBP budget document states that CBP alone purchased 56,105 HK P2000 duty pistols under the contract.

That puts your P2000SK in some interesting context: that entire P2000/P2000SK family was designed during an era when HK was chasing huge institutional duty-pistol contracts rather than primarily trying to dominate the American concealed-carry market.

What really struck me looking at HK's current financials is the scale of the shift. In 2025 HK did €393 million in sales, but took in €802 million in new orders, leaving a €695.5 million backlog at year-end. HK explicitly says the explosion in orders was largely caused by multiyear military orders.

And by July 2026 Germany had exercised that entire 250,000-rifle G95 framework. HK is investing more than €230 million in additional manufacturing capacity to handle these kinds of programs.

So HK is somewhat unusual compared with Glock or SIG's American image. Civilians see USP, P30, VP9, SP5, MR556, etc. and think of HK as an expensive premium gun company.

Financially, it's much closer to:

“NATO/EU small-arms defense contractor that also sells some extremely nice guns to civilians.”

That also helps explain some very HK-like behavior: high prices, extremely conservative engineering, slow product changes, weird civilian availability and sometimes seeming indifferent to whatever the hottest American commercial trend is. Their economic center of gravity has historically been ministries of defense, police procurement offices and enormous multiyear tenders, not whether somebody on Reddit thinks a VP9 magazine costs too much.

"Glock, CZ, S&W, 2011's, 1911's the occasional Sig or Beretta." Glocks have spongy bad triggers and are banned here, CZ is not sold here, S&W is great love my Shield, 2011's too heavy for daily field work, 1911 I already have two and also too heavy, have multiple Sig and Beretta, great guns.

I do like the logic though, the Sig P320 haters must be seethingggggggg

A better argument would have been “you already have a M18 and a PDP compact”. But I tried it out today and it felt great. I love the insane reliability they have too.

@Gawernator I think you’re taking this too deep. If you like the ergos, then get one. They’re fine guns.

The P30SK and VP9SK mags are the same tube as all VP9s, but the tubelengths and baseplates are different, so ymmv. But all of the new HK striker mags are reverse-model compatible, up to the P2000.

Yeah the mags won't interchange, the first user had it spot on. I ordered one today at Turner's, now I have to get a REAL ID since they're cracking down on middle initial vs full middle name which is extremely lame. Trigger was nice and it felt great in the hand, a little slimmer and shorter than my Walther so it should carry very well with a small optic like the EPS Carry I can put on it. It was $948 with military discount (before the $250 HK bucks rebate), not too shabby. Nobody else seems to have them in stock around Sacramento, The Gun Store said they had one but it was the old model, and Sacramento Black Rifle didn't even know what it was and didn't call me back lol.

Again, get what you want as you obviously will anyway. Competitors aren't using them because they are not competitive. That is regardless of cost. Many of the competitors out there only have a couple of handguns, and chose to invest in ammo/training instead since that will yield better results.

H&K are by no means expensive in today's market. I have knives that cost more than some of the modern H&K pistols.

My point is that few folks in the US are using them compared to other brands, so they must not really be that good. I see folks with $6k+ Atlas and other very expensive pistols at matches every weekend, so I'm doubting that they couldn't afford a $1k-$2k H&K.

By your logic, H&K must have come in bottom dollar for the contracts that they won, so that's a bit of a zero sum argument.

The only pistol I know that you own is the PDP, which I would chose over the H&K. You already own the PDP. Take that $ you would use to buy the H&K and come out and shoot some competitions with me instead :D

Sac Black Rifle is trash. I wasn’t impressed when I stopped by, not their inventory and not their customer service.

Yeah the CA VP9A1K is rare to find. It’s a niche model of an expensive brand that exists in an already packed polymer striker market.

I wasn’t a fan of the shorter grip personally, my pinky and edge of my palm overhung, but like you said it should conceal nicely.

I have the VP9 Match and a bunch of mags, so I did think about getting a K-model just for CCW as well…since I do have a ton of time already on the VP9 series. I have the VP9SK, so I’m rather curious how the VP9A1K would compare.

@Gawernator pay no mind to the riff-raff!!

They’re just trying to keep you down, haha!!

HK all day, everyday (BTW it impresses the fellas at the range if you keep the HK tag on your rail when you compete)

Yeah I doubt they are lugging that Atlas around IWB on a 14 hour assignment lol. That's like saying a Ducati V4R is not good because nobody is competing with it in Supercross LOL. For me, reliability, build quality, accuracy and ergonomics are huge, and HK does very well on all those marks. I also have a P2000SK, PDP compact, MK25, M18, Shield, Beretta M9, Ruger SP101, Makarov, a couple 1911's. I had a gen 4 Glock 19 but couldn't get over the spongy trigger and made out like a bandit on it haha. I think that's it. Will definitely be getting the Sig 2011 whenever that comes out.

No, not quite. All pistols are welcome for competition, so saying no one is competing with H&K's when they can compete with whatever they want is a strong statement. If H&K's are so good, they would be all over in competition. H&K even made their attempt to get into competition as seen above with the VP9 Match. It's even on Roster! Guess how many I've seen at matches... zero. Folks would rather pay off roster premiums for other offerings like the S&W M&P Metal HD Competitor. I've seen several of those already and they are not even on roster, which means they're paying far more $ than the off the shelf price of the VP9 Match.

By no means is competitive shooting the end all be of pistol arena's, I just thought it was interesting that I have yet to see a single H&K out there out of hundreds and hundreds of competitors I've met over these past several months. If they are so reliable, robust and accurate, why is no one using them? I would even venture to say they are affordable now compared to the market offerings overall.

Side note, Glock triggers can be made into fantastic triggers for under $50 and there are so few parts that nearly anyone can tune them up exactly how they like. Will they be single action triggers? Obviously not, but neither are H&K.

I would not use an aftermarket trigger on my CCW. HK triggers smoke Glock, it's not even close. The Walther is even better. What it tells you is mostly that HKs are not especially attractive as competition platforms. Competition absence is evidence that HK isn't a particularly competitive competition platform. I agree with that. What I don't agree with is jumping from that to “therefore HK pistols aren't very good.” USPSA rewards trigger, tuning ecosystem, magwells, cheap mags, parts availability and recoil characteristics far more than it rewards things like duty durability, adverse-condition reliability or long-term institutional serviceability. Those are different optimization problems.

Lots of guys love old SV650's for trackdays, but that's not what I want as a pro athlete/competitor

I would hope so for pistols that cost considerably more... Throw $50 at the OEM Glock trigger, using OEM components, have a better trigger then buy a case or two of ammo to shoot it 🤷‍♀️. Let's not even talk about the cost and availability of mags in comparison. You can buy just about any similarly priced 1911 and that trigger will most often leave the H&K trigger in the dust. If not, you can take about an hour of time and $0 to get an absolutely fantastic trigger. You already have a 1911, so if the trigger is so important, you already have that covered.

None of this detracts away from my points.

Very few folks are using them in competition, very few US Based LEO & Military units use H&K Pistols compared to other brands/platforms. Gotta be reasons for that.

I don't disagree that HK is a weak choice if your primary criterion is competition. Glock/M&P/P320/CZ/2011 have vastly better competition ecosystems, cheaper mags and parts, and are much easier to tune. That's a legitimate advantage.

Where I disagree is using competition participation or agency market share as a proxy for overall handgun quality.

Government procurement is heavily influenced by cost, logistics, parts, training, licensing and contract terms. Look at the Army MHS competition: GAO records show SIG was only slightly superior technically to Glock, but was about $102.7 million cheaper in evaluated price. The Army specifically said it couldn't justify paying a 37% premium for Glock. That doesn't mean Glock sucked.

HK itself has also won major US handgun procurements. DHS awarded the P2000/P2000SK/USP Compact family a contract for up to 65,000 pistols after extensive testing.

And sure, a good 1911 trigger smokes basically every polymer duty-pistol trigger. That's one of the defining strengths of a 1911. It doesn't make a 1911 the best answer to every handgun requirement.

If we're asking "what would I build specifically for USPSA?", HK probably isn't my answer either. If we're asking what I value in a carry/duty pistol, reliability, durability, accuracy, ergonomics and factory configuration matter a lot more to me than whether it dominates Limited Optics.

The P211 is actually a decent entry-level 2011. The hype around the yucky 2K11 that the internet has, I strongly believe Sig actually rightfully deserves.

I’m Team CZ all the way until my last breath, but Sig really outdid themselves with their entry into the 2011 arena. Especially with their shameful P320 fiasco (which I do and still own).

The fact it can use my P320 mags also is huge. Especially at $55 a pop

You keep saying this. Can you provide your sources for otherwise?

How are you confirming this as fact? And then, I think you're attributing it the handgun being nothing special, and for these kind of institution claims that would mean some sort of bakeoff data. Please share that too.
