4 killed, 10 injured in shooting during family celebration in California. They should start pulling ammo background check logs. That’ll solve the case

Mods, this is getting way off topic.
Not really. They all have valid points. If we’re talking about banning things that kill people, then we’d better ban spoons, knives, forks, cars, bananas, airplanes, bicycles, literally any and everything you use in daily life. You never know when you might slip on a banana peel and crack your skull, or when some idiot who’s absorbed in TikTok might blow a red and T-bone you. Or when your flight might crash due to weather, mechanical failure, hijacking, or the pilot having a breakdown… Just sayin…

Let’s remember that in the USA, the following two things are true.

1. 54% of our population can only read at 6th grade level or below that. That’s over half of our population.

2. 21% of our population is functionally illiterate. That’s really close to one quarter of our population.

It’s no wonder most of the food we buy has photos of the food contained therein on the package or can.

And the nutritional info on the package is Greek to much of our population.

Large corporations have complex hedging structures to derisk the volatility of commodity prices of their supply chains. To presume that ingredients are selected for their "nutritional value" or what consumers actually want is missing a lot of what actually goes on here.

It's more about how effectively you can advertise and what you can get away with than it is making a good product. Can I convince enough people to eat sawdust with chemical paste glue? If yes then we've got a great deal going.
You convince people by putting in sugar. We don't need that though. That's one part of the problem and a major one.

I used to weigh 345lbs. I’m 160 now at 14% body fat. I never stopped eating what I wanted. You just control portions and stop stuffing your face like you’re living for dopamine. It’s easy.

It’s thermodynamics. Calories in vs calories out. It’s every bit of self control. No one has ever cut calories and gained weight. Doesn’t happen.

Wouldn’t be the internet without a stranger jabbing at another stranger though.

Sorry you need that to get through your day. God Bless.
That's an amazing transformation and I'm happy for you. I'm repeating myself now, it's not easy for some people and it goes a bit beyond self control and is multifactorial.

I'm at my high school weight at 150 lbs. Due to high cholesterol Doc said knock out the fat. I also tested pre diabetic so I knocked out sugar.
I now test good. Weight will drop off if you do those two things. I don't drink nor smoke so that's taken care of.

I still enjoy fat and sugar occasionally. That's ok, got to enjoy life. Looking forward to out living all my friends. At 73 many have already died. Some are fat and will go out soon enough.

A long life outweighs any food gratitude. You simply need to decide if you want to live.

This is in General Discussion. It’s not the laws side of the house, so a little more room is given. As long as it doesn’t get into political ranting it’s ok. Sharing personal experiences is a way of connecting. I’m also in agreement that food can have negative effects on the population that goes unchecked. The people that care are healthy, the people that are not educated are dying younger through ignorance. Is it up to the govt to help its citizens or leave corps unchecked and add whatever they want to food supply is comparable to allowing the same decision for firearms purchases. It’s an ethical question because you can choose.

IMO it’s a healthy discussion as long and people don’t start attacking. Even then, offenders will be reply banned first.

I feel like this is at least the third time you've stated some form of these stats on the forums. Curious what your source is.

Boy, did this thread go way off topic. Let me see if I can steer it back to my original point when I started this thread. There’s a $50,000 reward for the shooters of this heinous act. So obviously they haven’t caught the perpetrators yet. So, what happened to pulling the logs for the ammunition background checks? Isn’t that the reason behind the ammo background checks? Isn’t that the reason behind the 11% excise tax? Obviously I’m being facetious. Criminals don’t give a crap about the law. Meanwhile, us, the law abiding, 2A loving California citizens, keep having to bend backwards every time something like this occurs. What’s next? A 20% excise tax when you purchase firearms and ammo? Hell, let’s make it 50%. That’ll prevent this from happening in the future, right?

Chances are, the suspects should be behind bars right now but a Californian DEI/ Liberal Judge gave them their 100th chance to get out of jail/ prison because the system is against them and their just good boys deep down.
If they're caught, I doubt a liberal judge would let them go. There's a high level of sarcasm, but once they're caught since they hit kids in prison or on the streets its likely this will self correct in its own way. Shootings are on the rise as the economy gets worse so expect this trend to continue.

The laws are enacted to prevent this but with millions of guns already out there, this is one of the reasons this community exists. Unless there are solutions, its likely to continue. No law changes will only increase the rate of problems not decrease them. This kind of shooting tells me people are being desensitized and don't care about hitting kids like when it was in the 80's. Should that trend continue, that's the real worry. All the more importance in self defense if you live in these types of areas.

So, over the past 3-4 years, why does the media call situations like this “mass shootings” now instead of gang related shootings or gang violence. In the past, these were considered gang related shootings or gang violence in the media.

In the past, mass shootings, in the media, were generally someone who just mentally lost it and took it out on a school, church, or grocery market; unless it was racially, religiously, or politically motivated.

Do you think some of this including gang related shootings as mass shootings; could be from some of the anti-gun funding that some news channels or radio stations are receiving? Ever notice how some news channels or radio stations says the word “gun”; with that kind of “oh my goodness a GUN!????!” kind of tone.

You're both right.

The people that control our politicians pay both sides of every controversial issue, war, etc., to keep the population divided and they do not care one ounce about human life.

Regarding food and being fat, this is true. Most Americans are fat and are taught it's genetic which is a lie.

Chemicals, hormones and genetically modified everything is our normal and only people who experience the food in parts of Europe would know that what we eat here is not normal.

It all plays into behavior control. A little bit social media and the majority of the population do exactly what the controllers desire from them, perfectly predictable.

The violence will not end, homeless will not end, drugs will keep flowing, health issues, etc.

If we stay divided, we're just ants.

Couldn’t agree with you more. And it sure feels that way. However, what’s the cause? People have different answers. Politics, weak or too restrictive gun control laws, the fall of the nuclear family, lack of religion, etc. The list goes on. However, if we take a long look at not just US history, but world history, I think we’re living in some of the least violent times. Just my opinion.
Don't forget stagnant wages, shrinking opportunity, over-worked, over-stressed, etc.

It’s a cultural move toward blurring moral distinctions.

“Gang shooting” names the actors and their moral agency…people making wicked choices, often in patterns of sin, lawlessness, retaliation, and hardened hearts.

“Mass shooting” removes agency. It abstracts the evil into a category that feels more like a phenomenon than a choice.

This aligns with a post-Christian culture that resists naming sin plainly and instead frames everything as systemic, sociological, or environmental.

“Gang shooting” forces society to confront the fact that specific groups of people are choosing violence.

“Mass shooting” lets people avoid that reality.

Understanding that you are being facetious and sarcastic above, undoubtedly you realize that investigations are conducted by government employees, police to be specific and it's not as if they have a reputation for brilliance or rapid results.

As for the 11% tax:
  • Revenue from the tax is deposited into a special fund called the Gun Violence Prevention and School Safety Fund.
  • The money is dedicated exclusively to: (1)The California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) grant program (2)School safety grants and improvements administered by the California Department of Education (3)The Department of Justice for costs related to implementing the tax
Mass shootings are down dramatically, in fact they are currently at a 20 year low: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/02/mass-killings-database

You mentioned prevention, what do you think would help prevent these kinds of events, either entirely or in part? Given that we aren't going back to the days of the old west where everyone strapped on a sidearm and, that our society isn't about to hire millions of armed security personnel to guard birthday parties, etc. Also, contrary to what some here say, gun safety, practicing, etc. are not the answers. The only things that I can think of that could make a difference are: 1.) Making it far more difficult for everyone to acquire firearms. 2.) Making the weapons that are publicly available far less efficient. 3.) Make it far more difficult to acquire ammunition. These are the exact questions that people in the DoJ and our legislators grapple with constantly.

I respect your opinion, however I think you’re not seeing the forest through the trees. Background checks, background checks, and more background checks. So where’s the pay off? Isn't that “making it more difficult “ to acquire ammo and firearms? I’ll play the devils advocate here. If you make it more difficult for citizens of California to obtain firearms and ammunition, it’s creates a black market where criminals will find it easier to acquire these items. The concept of supply demand comes to mind. And round and round the argument goes. I wonder what the “mass shooting” statistics are for a state like Arizona where it is a cash and carry state? Stricter gun laws it’s always the answer.

I didn't mention anything about background checks. Nor did I limit the restrictions to California.

I'll repeat the question I asked of you: "What do you think would help prevent these kinds of events, either entirely or in part?" Obviously the answer isn't "change human nature (impossible to do)" OR "Change society (also impossible to do)".
