4 killed, 10 injured in shooting during family celebration in California. They should start pulling ammo background check logs. That’ll solve the case

GPS is great. We had GPS before spaceX. spaceX is just another tax funded company that wouldn't exist without uncle sams donations.

Healthcare will believe it or not continue to exist without the government funding the administrative monster that's private insurance behind it all.
Its irresponsible to minimize the objective success of SpaceX missions because you have a wild hair up your ass about one guy being a billionaire.

I actually think everything boils down to whether or not people's basic needs and security, promise of a future are met. Through that cohesive social safety forms upward mobility occurs and crime diminishes as prosperity flourishes.

Noone is angry enough to shoot up their school when their future is full of hope and promise, their opportunities are abundant, their role models are magnanimous and their stomachs are full. Atleast, the occurrence is likely very rare.

You are disregarding that even when it's raining sugarplums and daisies; religion, politics, lust for power and control, simple greed and the influence of demagogues will drive many to commit heinous acts.

It would be wonderful if we could construct the Rodenberry Star Trek style societal utopia you describe but, if it ever happens, it's certainly a long way off, if we as a species even survive that long.

If God wiped evil off the face of the earth tomorrow do you think you’d be here the next day?

The solution might be as simple as a public execution. Take the perp out into the middle of the street, truss him up so he can’t run, give the families of the victim guns, and tell them to start shooting him, starting with his legs. And show it on every TV channel.
Better yet, why not resurrect gladiatorial games where convicted criminals fight each other and the losers get fed to the lions, tigers, alligators, crocodiles and hogs? That would probably be quite popular on Pay-Per-View....

People who commit crimes almost all feel they will not be caught or it's done in the heat of the moment when they are not thinking about repercussions.

Socialized government run health care won't fly here with our massive debt and the huge military budget. The intrest we pay on the debt (already spent money) now exceeds our massive military budget.

The main reason EU and other countries can do that is because they don't have huge military budgets and no 40 trillion dollar debt service. It's still not a good alternative as wait times are excessive in countries like Canada and the UK. Some die before they can see a doctor.

The wealthy in those countries don't bother with their government health care. They fly over here and pay cash to see our doctors.

What we have right now is socialized government run healthcare. We're just paying 6x as much for it for the added benefit of subsidizing 600,000 insurance jobs and all the hospital admin staff on top.

The whole point of single payer is to cut all of that waste out of the system. Let's let those folks find work in sectors actually adding value to the economy like building bombs with tax money to send to the middle east or whatever ;)

I focus on things we can control for not the negative outcomes we can't really influence. The way you deal with despots is to shine light on their behaviors. Eventually the most religious of fools is forced to reckon with the realities

Well, yours of course, because their still fat because you didn’t explain it well enough.
You’ll want to use “they’re” here as in “they are.” “Their” is the possessive use.

Other people are not my responsibility. That’s my whole point. If you’re fat, it’s your own fault. Google it.

True despots do everything they possibly can to demean and control the media, so shinning that light becomes quite difficult. Also, there are no fools like religious fools, they will frequently follow their cult leaders to the grave before they recognize reality.

"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." ~Karl Marx, 1844

Frequently condensed to: "Religion is the opiate of the masses".

1. We don't need 1/2 the military budget we currently allocate.
2. If we were to tax all forms of income the way we tax earned income, we wouldn't have a national debt. We would have a lot fewer hundred millionaires and billionaires as well.
3. Eliminate the vast majority of tax loopholes and and corporate subsidies and our nation would be flush with cash to maintain our infrastructure, provide healthcare, defend ourselves and ensure everyone has food and shelter.

Here is an interesting take/fact I saw on reddit about some talking points in this thread.

Very smart people suggesting making healthcare completely profit incentivized are taken very seriously.

The reason healthcare and plumbing aren’t the same markets is because when your child has leukemia you can’t watch a YouTube video and go down to Home Depot and buy a 200$ tool and do the bone marrow transplant yourself, nor do you have the option of choosing a different cheaper option. You can literally just turn your mainline water off and the real problem is over.

You actually in most healthcare scenarios have no choice whatsoever in the matter you need(not want) the latest designed care possible. Making such a market entirely profit incentivized is nothing short of sociopathic.

I guess powerfulJRE doesn’t talk to any actual economists or normal people or else this would be pretty obvious.

The goal of healthcare should be quite simply to make people collectively as healthy as possible, live as high a quality of life as possible, as long as possible, for as little money as possible.

Obviously that’s not what we have now, but the childish presumption that just clearing out regulations would somehow achieve any of these things isn’t even on the table in rational conversations. Single payer is the obvious solution to anyone who has actually looked at the problem objectively and done the math.

Perhaps a better starting point is first principles:

Why is ANY government spending on criminal justice or defense “a good thing” while other government spending is “a bad thing”?

If you want to back out of the trees and look at the forest, one must examine the definition of a "Sovereign Nation".

This is one widely accepted definition:

"A sovereign nation is a country that has a supreme authority to govern its own territory and population, free from outside interference. It must have a defined territory, a permanent population, a government, and the capacity to engage in relations with other sovereign states. Sovereignty means that the nation is politically independent and has full self-determination over its internal and external affairs."

Given that, to be an SN one must be prepared to defend one's territory and prevent anarchy, hence defense and criminal justice.

In a perfect world. Here our government spends more than it takes in, hence the national debt. Increasing tax revenue will result in more spending.
Politicians cannot control themselves and many people vote for free stuff, except it's not free.

The solution is to vote for more like Rand Paul who understands the economics of debt. Increasing government revenue will result in more debt.

Yeah yeah, the casualties of age, typing on a phone and not caring about grammar. Obviously, sarcasm is lost on you.

Actually no, the "solution" is to incorporate a balanced budget amendment into our abortion of an unamendable constitution.

Increasing tax revenue to the level it should be at will help our nation move into the future while raising all the "boats in the harbor". We certainly aren't going to get there by reducing taxes on corporations and the ultra-wealthy while at the same time implementing what amounts to the most sinister regressive tax, in history, on the people of the United States in the form of moronic and obscene "tariffs", which amount to nothing other than a national sales tax.

I don’t think either party has any intention to eliminate deficit spending. The few outliers that do lack the support to make it a reality.
