Any practical reason to have a .308/7.62 X 51?

considering even SOCOM considers 7.62 obsolete it seems 308 rifles will only decrease in price due to unpopularity. It will be a lot easier to pick up a used large frame 308 in 5 years when everyone has moved on
That’s just not true ninja

The MK24 still retains 7.62 capability and greater military still uses 7.62 rifles

Fortunately, you don't need reasons for why you will own one platform or another. If you like it, buy it. No need to justify it 😁. You'll likely never need something like this or an AR for any reason through your entire life, but the chances are never zero.
This is why Brandon doesn’t leave the house without 2 2011’s, 4 spare mags and a sling rifle lol

Obsolete doesn't mean it doesn't work it means theres something better. The greater military doesn't have a choice, we do.

I don't know if this is true, because I have no direct experience with it, but I've heard it is much more reliable to buy a complete AR-10 than it is to try to build one the way so many people build AR-15s. The reason I was given is that AR-10s are not as standardized as mil spec AR-15s, and you can get more incompatibility issues if you mixed match parts from different manufacturers.

I'm not in the market for a .308, but if I were, I'd probably go completely impractical and get something like a M1A or one of the CMP M14s coming out next year.

That’s probably true in general. There’s like 3 patterns I know of but DPMS is the most popular

I think you have a bias, but I like how the 308 looks :)
In a battle rifle/shtf/plinking point-of-view, 308 outclasses the 6.5 due to ammo cost and availability.

In precision, I guess 6.5, but 308 has done the job many times over.

Yeah but if it was obsolete that means they would have stopped using it. The program still supports 7.62 NATO specifically. Maybe one day they’ll stop using it. 6.5 creedmore is better in the niche of very far distance shooting and that’s about it

Remember when .45 ACP was rendered obsolete by 9mm? Then when 9mm was rendered obsolete by .40 S&W? How about when .30-06 was rendered obsolete by .308? Or 7.62×39mm by 5.45×39mm?

Consider the AR-47 in 7.62x39. Same .308 diameter bullet but far less cost. It shoots great with a 5.56 lower.

The bigger holes are easy to see and it's good to 400 yards. More kick than 5.56.

I built mine years ago with an ARB cryo-nitride bull barrel rated to 35k rounds. It's also very accurate. Paid $99 for it. 7" spread at 400 yards. Better at 100.

I used the type 1 bolt, an extended firing pin for Russian primers, adjustable gas block, Sparrow grip, MFT stock fixed and muzzle brake.

I bought cases of Russian ammo years ago. Red Army, Tula, Wolf and Golden Tiger. Paid about 20 cpr. It is cheap shooting with a bigger hole. 6.5 and 308 rounds are too expensive now days.

It's more fun than 5.56. My favorite AR.

I am all over a CMP M-14. I can’t believe they’re keeping them around $2k. Deal of the century if true.

I heard the limit is two per person to start. That would be cool.

All of those calibers have survived pretty well except for .40 LOL

That's where I was going with the post, lol. The old warhorses have a way of staying relevant, despite new things coming along to usurp them.

It's obsolete in the forces that are actually doing stuff, the infantry isn't even at war right now they are just sitting there so they don't even have a reason to upgrade. The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to maximize bullet length in the short action cartridge so with 30 percent more recoil you bypass 308 velocity at 200 yards, at 500 yards it has 50 percent less drop, at 1000 yards 308 is subsonic and worthless but 6.5 creedmoor is competing with 300 win mag. The thing is there just isn't a reason to choose 308 unless you already have it because CM is cheaper, more available and better at everything. You will notice the difference even just target shooting at 500 it's a big difference especially in your wind calls.

Right and I’m not a professional sniper nor rich so no reason for me to drop my .308 guns and get that lol. Maybe one day when the institutional forces are there

I don't think you have bought ammo in a while, 6.5 creedmoor outsells 308 in both rifles and ammo and costs the same or cheaper. To reload is cheaper it uses cheaper bullets, less powder.
