I'd say it depends more on what use you intend it for. If it's SHTF or whatever end of the world scenario is the flavor of the week, then sure, 308 can be helpful for taking out threats that might be wearing body armor or a vest. Even if their plate stops the round, they may reconsider their desire to approach. 308 is more barrier blind then 556 and would be more effective taking out threats behind walls, doors, inside vehicles, etc if tge need ever arose

If you end up at a property with some distance you need to defend, 308 will do it better the 556. But this is probably best done with a bolt action.

I built my LR-308. Made sure to include lightweight components so it didn't get overly heavy and can be used as a battle rifle if needed. It's fun to shoot. Maybe more so then my AR-15. For that reason alone it might be worth it.

I live in the city but never considere indoor ranges. I hate the restrictions, cost and distance. I like to drive out to BLM or national forest to set up my targets. I can choose pistols or rifles or both without any problems an indoor range might present

Right off the bat let me say I don't hunt. I don't care about proprietary mags. I don't want to build one. I'm looking for featureless and don't plan on adding a sh*t ton of aftermarket mods.

Buying a .308 is about practical as being a r8rs4lf fan! I just figured out your "User Name", r8rs4lf (Raiders for life)! Just do it, you'll be happy and have a reason to drive 2 hours for a nice day of shooting!
