Are people that stupid or just plan lazy

Add in the executive order to close the Department of Education, and things get even more bleak.

I don't have kids and I still want my tax dollars going to education.

Logical thinking, if applied, would really make people question all the gun laws here in CA.
The elimination of the DOE should prove to be beneficial. I am not certain of the statistics but when the DOE was formed, America was third in the world for education, 2020 America was down with the 3rd world country's.

Have you seen the high rate of kids now being on the spectrum

Everybody is on the spectrum to some degree. Sure, the truly autistic people need professional help. The borderline people, however, would be better served by an educational system that builds upon their strengths (just like everyone else). When you have a mandated system built around the average student, what you'll turn out is average students. Nobody wants average.

To be a little more accurate, that 54% describes American adults who are not proficient at handling complex reading tasks. There is no direct correlation to educational grade level. Aside from this statistical nit-picking, I think we can agree that far to many of our fellow citizens are complete dumbasses who can't read, think, apply logic, and follow through with anything but the most basic tasks.
No, complex tasks are what’s called a “Level 4”

The NLI equates “Level 3” with a sixth grade reading level. You can find that displayed on their website.

Specifically the “Level 3” abilities are:

“Can handle moderately challenging tasks. This includes summarizing text, identifying map locations, or calculating office supply costs.”

28% of adults are “Level 1” which is:

“Readers at this level can comprehend simple sentences and short paragraphs with minimal structure. They struggle with multi-step instructions, complex logic, or digital layouts with distractions.”

Only about 30% of high school students here graduate with passing reading and math scores. It's so bad that California Universities created basic English classes for undergraduates that can't read.

Somehow they got in without basic skills.
