Beginner Getting Into Competition Shooting

Where are you looking to compete? I reached out to my local USPSA here in Piru and was gonna try and spectate a match next month before diving right in. I also plan on using my MP 2.0 but I have the compact.

Dive right in. Piru is very low key and supportive. Just tell them you are new.

Where are you? SoCal?

Oh Shoot runs matches at Prado every Saturday and Sunday. Wednesdays they also run Wednesday Night Steel. WNS is like miniature USPSA matches with smaller stages that are heavy on the steel targets.

Every Saturday and 1st/3rd Sundays is USPSA. If they have one of the bigger matches like the Howitzer or 5.11 sponsored series matches, they'll open up afternoon squads to let more people shoot.

Every 2nd/4th Sunday is IDPA.

If anybody is on the fence about trying it out, just do it. Don't just come out and watch a match to get a feel for it either. Show up with your gear ready to shoot! I always say that I've had so much fun and met so many great friends through these matches that I never would have met otherwise. I really regret not starting sooner. So just sign up and get out there, you won't regret it. Introduce yourself to your squad and let them know it's your first match. Everyone will be super excited to have somebody new in the sport and there will always be somebody to help you out with everything you need to know along the way.

For IDPA, would I be ok with an AIWB holster and a single mag carrier?
EDIT: Im reading the CA Shooters IDPA site now..... I see I need a strong side OWB/IWB.

If you're looking at ca-idpa-shooters, that site is outdated. CA IDPA is the club that used to run IDPA. They did not allow for AIWB for a long time, but several months ago they actually began to allow it. However, that club no longer operates at Prado. Oh Shoot took over and is the club that currently runs IDPA matches at Prado. They allow AIWB holsters for both USPSA and IDPA. If you already carry AIWB, no need to buy another holster.
When I shoot USPSA, I use a race rig. When I shoot IDPA, I use my EDC gear. AIWB with sidecar mag pouch. My second mag I just pocket carry since I only carry one pouch anyway for EDC. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Have you ever shot NRG at r66? If so which one is a more pleasant experience? I shot the last Wednesday night steel and I’ve only done local matches where I live. I’ve always wanted to do the real deal. Thanks!

It's a lot of the same people that go around to all the SoCal matches, so you'll find a squad with some great folks either way. NRG just has a little different feel to the stage designs.
