I've read that UV Light can dull anodizing on aluminum, so I'm going to remove the grips for that and put a little tape over the bright orange mag release.

Which Hoppe's product are you referring to, the odorous bore-cleaner or milder oil? Is Hoppe's bore cleaner safe for gun finishes?

I use Hoppes bore cleaner on the barrel and to wipe down the slide interior and frame interior. Everything else gets rubbing alcohol wipe down, then I use the Hoppes oil to lubricate, followed up with microfiber wipe down of any excess oils. I've never had an issue with Hoppes on any gun finish.

This actually got me wondering how the firearms were able to soak in cologne....

Unless they carry it in a gym bag or one of those fanny packs that are popular with the kids these days, spray the cologne on the chest/fanny pack and walk out the door...

Ozone should be able to eliminate the compounds in cologne that you're detecting. Should not harm metal or wood either. Unfortunately, it will break down rubber, foam, and also some plastics, if used to excess... Car detailers have ozone generators, you can also rent them in certain places.

SoCal, Riverside County. I had those Ozium canisters for a while but those smelled pretty bad too. I bought a synth which the seller cleaned with some horrible-smelling cleaning product, so I bought 'em for that.

I have a little UV light on it now. How long do you think I should expose the gun to UV light in order to neutralize cologne molecules?

The light is 5v 3w, 365+395nm wavelength. It's at its highest intensity now but it's got 4 dimmable positions.

Same thing happened to me when I got the flu really bad that put me in the hospital. I couldn't stand perfumes of any kind, soap scents, and became extremely senstive to smells and could smell all sorts of new things after i recovered. Walking down the street was totally new smell wise. My hair even changed after all that crap. I tell my friends it's a blessing and a curse.

Yeah man it's a whole world of odors that a lot of people aren't detecting or at least not as intensely.

That's actually a great idea... I totally forgot about coffee beans.

Also, before trying Super Green HD (diluted, I assume?), what about distilled vinegar (also diluted)? Distilled vinegar has been proven to deodorize, but I am not sure if it acidity may have any detrimental effects on the firearm.

Any lingering scent from the distilled vinegar should dissipate over the course of a week and can easily be masked by Ballistol/CLPs?

Good suggestion. I have an ammo case that I filled with coffee beans, placed a gun in there and covered it with beans. Might work!

Hi Gun-Fanciers,

This is a strange issue I will admit. Early in life I lost some hearing, but I gained a super olfactory sense. I can smell the difference between Diet Coke and Coke on odor alone! I could probably be one of those product testers who are paid to smell and taste foods such as coffee for detailed feedback. Chefs would pay dearly for my nose! No really, there was a sushi chef in a documentary who was showing a bit of envy for the prodigious nose of a fellow chef.

So, the last two PPTs I bought had cologne issues. One cologne issue affects two guns, and the other affects the case. Both annoy me but aren't dealbreakers. I just need a way to combat these persistent odors or encourage them to go away. I have a low-grade headache right now from the olfactory onslaught.

I know Ozium is one product that might work, as in placing a gun in an airtight case or container with an open Ozium container.

I've tried wiping down surfaces but the guns/case keep emanating cologne. Of course I'll keep making cleaning passes. The irony is that I bought Hoppe's M-Pro 7 cleaner because it's odorless, LOL. I could also try a really smelly exterior gun cleaner which covers/replaces the cologne but is more acceptable for a firearm.

I'm hoping that general-use and gunsmoke will eventually subdue these annoying odors. Can't have my guns smelling like the cologne department at Macy's! At least it's not gran's Tea Rose, right? I sold a whole car once because I couldn't get Chanel No. 5 out of the passenger seat. I'm not even kidding. The upside is that I upgraded to a more current model. My first used EV had some old guy's cologne imbued into the seat and it never stopped bothering me.

Cologne, not unlike unrelenting music one cannot abide, becomes an irritant because it never stops poking that one part of the brain. It. Never. Stops.

I know, this isn't your usual complaint, and this probably sounds crazy to most of you.

I know it's mostly me because of my super-powered nose and sensitivity to cologne which leads to headaches and general irritation. Some people either have no sense of smell or aren't bothered by prodigious amounts of cologne.

I think Ozium is good for airborne odors, but “ozone” is produced by an electrical discharge device used by carpet cleaners and landlords to oxidize object-borne odors, like guitars and cases. As someone else mentioned, it is likely the grips, since solvents (or alcohol) should remove residual odors from metal.

I love the smell of vinegar but it's a mild acid. Could work though if I follow it quickly with cleaner and gun oil.

Well, I've tried UV light, multiple cleanings, some super odorous Hoppe's No. 9, volcanic rocks (not sure if they're even legit), and coffee beans as suggested by @WojtekWeaponry here on the forum. I have the cologne-infused soft case on the outside picnic table (that the gun was in for PPT), but I still smell the cologne despite sunlight/UV bombardment. I should just toss it out. This cologne is like a plague...and it gets on ME and then it gets on anything I touch. I'd be horrified if my car took on that scent.

So far, the coffee beans have worked the best! They've mostly neutralized the sickly-sweet and cloying cologne. The only hitch is my brain still thinks I smell it, but I don't think I do. I will keep testing so I can give my nose and brain a break, as my brain will 'replay' this scent, torturing me a bit like a bad song that won't stop playing in your head. The girlfriend confirmed the neutralized cologne.

Now I need to know the SCIENCE behind it! Thanks everyone, and thanks Nathan at Wojtek!

I bought a used vltor modpod off ebay, and holy hell the bipod reeks of cologne. I would return it, but I haven't seen a 2nd hand of this item at a great price in a long time.

I need to dunk it in something, but not trying to get it in places I can't dry off.

All of my PPTs have been in-person, in California. Sadly, this is the second item that REEEEEEEKS of cologne. Great people so far for the most part, but Jesus I could never wear so much cologne that my whole gun smelled like it was dipped in Paco Rabanne. I mean, it smells like a frickin' nightclub. Gross.

But yeah, the coffee beans are WORKING to neutralize the odors. I think fresh-ground beans would work even better, in a little dish or cup inside a closed container. I'm using older grounds now to subdue the STANK on the AO1 case...which reeks of some guy's cologne. I'm like a territorial cat, lol.
