Buying a 22 lr Pistol for High Volume Training

I own several 9mm pistols that I rotate to the range, but wondering how many people purchased a 22 lr (like a Ruger Mark IV or P22) to cross-train?

I figure every range trip I go through 200-300 rounds of 9mm. But given how much cheaper 22 lr is, like why not shoot a bunch more of that in the same session too?

Anyone find it added much / was a useful supplement to your 9mm skills, or my money is better put to just buy more 9mm 🤔

Looks like I may need to find a CZ 75 Kadet Adapter to cross train with the P01  too bad it's discontinued... but sheesh even the P22 looks pretty damn cheap to just get a 22 lr on hand

I have both p322 and p22, I am selling my p22. P322 just feels like a regular 9mm with less recoil. I also have a buckmark similar to the Mark IV, I really like it, but it's nothing like a 9mm pistol and you can't train your skill with that.

If you want to shoot more and the cost of ammo is a concern, by all means get yourself a .22. The cool thing about shooting a popgun is that the recoil doesn't mask your mistakes. When you flub a shot, it's more obvious what you've done.

My favorite is the Ruger Mk I with a heavy barrel. It makes it easy to practice rapid fire while taking heavier recoil out of the equation. Second favorite is a Smith & Wesson Model 34. Again, with heavy recoil out of the equation, you get to focus on your double action trigger pull.

I don't think there's enough recoil and similarity to really train like that but they're fun to shoot, mainly to plink with. Fun shooting fruit and water bottles, milk jugs etc. Gets boring to punch paper it's too easy lol.

Wait that's crazy lol I checked handgun hero, did not realize the P322 was G19 sized... and wth the P22 is that tiny?

Honestly that P322 looking real nice now for training skill transfer 👀
I’ve really liked my P22, but the grip is small and I cannot fully cross train the P22 and my full size 9mm.

Go full size: P322, FN502, M&P 22.

+1 on the P322. If you get one, removing the mag disconnect will fix the issue with the mag not dropping out. Great pistol for introducing friends to shooting too.

What are you training? Your money I’d say is better put towards more 9mm

I've had many as "trainers" over the years and have sold them all. For me I've found the ammo sensitivity's, weight, balance, size, controls, trigger feel, sight picture and recoil are too different for any major training benefit. What I have done now is a dry fire laser trainer that goes in my 9mm, I've found them to be very beneficial and cheap. clear the pistol, then clear it again and dryfire, dryfire, dryfire.

One was just sold on eBay for under $300. Midway recently had kadet sp-01 and kadet shadow, last I checked they were accepting back orders.

I have a Sig P322 and I love that thing. It feels like a full size and has been reliable with Federal ammo I shoot it with. Carbon build up might be an issue but it's nothing that can be solved by a quick cleaning. The FN 502 also looks promising so I might get one in the future.

That's a crazy good deal

I love my Kadet but switched more recently to using my Ruger Mark III.

I think both are fantastic platforms for training.

If I was competing, and using a 1911 platform, I might consider getting a Ruger 22/45 for the matching grip angle.

Honestly just smoother trigger pull, general better handling of my firearms, reducing flinch. Fixing that damn low left 😂.

I’ve only started learning how to shoot about 6 months ago

Interesting enough, I’ve seen a lot of advice to pull the trigger straight to the break vs stacking it till the wall, then trying to break (which I like to do now)

This YouTuber @JaredAF has been fire for learning drills and technique imo:
