Shortsighted thinking like "what would russia want with a small local gun forum" is probably why calguns is having so many damn problems. Because clearly, there's interest. Or maybe the simple inability to consider that while there's information to scrape from calguns, sometimes it's as simple as establishing a "backstory" or seemingly innocuous history for when they go for their real targets.

It's an interest point, just like processing any other history of interaction, that is valuable.

Grocery store customer loyalty programs contain an interest point.

Pharmacy data is a good one.

Collect enough dimensions and you get depth to the population. It's statistics and behavioral science, less raw focus on technology.

It also is part of why the other site lacks a lot of product and service based thinking in its operations. Most of their issues is just keeping itself running. Protecting your users is and has always been a given. Serving your users is something they do as a byproduct, rather than a focus.

The utility of collecting data from properties, whether legitimately or not, is that an outside interest is getting the value while minimizing the hassle of running the property

I wouldn't call that working fine. Mobile view of the desktop site is Fd. Basic testing from the 90s still eludes them.

Stats for the month of August when comparing to our neighbors. Granted, the site was pretty much unusable, we're catching up with our stickiness and growing content library. This month looks like we're stable, but still consistently growing.

These metrics don't mean too much for August, but it shows our continued trajectory to be another resource. Thank you everyone who is contributing your posts, recommendations, and more! I'm still amazed myself. The recent upgrades positions us further.

I just saw this bit older post on Calguns, and wondering if Calguns is inflating, overstating website visits, to show that it is alive and not dying/dead?

Well the fact I didn't get get a error message is a plus lol.

I noticed the latency too. First thing to load is the ads. Then you get the desktop theme. Next some text contentrenders. Finally you see the login modeul load in. Thats literally how we tested sites in the late 90s, but the calguns order is backwards from what a secure site checkdown looks for.

The next post about user stats correctly detects missing context. Live users for how many intervals of time? This day-week-month-random date range xxxxx users did something. It could be search engine pass thrus direct to a post. This is where bots indexing could be counted as views. Bot brute force hitting the login function trying credentials found in an exposure file. There is all sorts of context in user stats that are meaningful.

Not that dead. It's alive enough to collect from his contributors/advertisers sadly. Absolute bare minimum effort. What a shame. I wonder when they'll toss in the towel.

They will toss in the towel when advertiser contracts expire OR they revolt and stop paying. Unfortunately those automatic paypal support payments is probably what sustains them right now and all the people that didn't notice they are paying calguns or don't know how to stop it is also sustaining them. My club makes the bulk of their money from automatic membership payments even though most members are not even active with the club.

I havent been able to read my unread messages for over a month, it just will not let you get to messages at any hour of the day or night. I can't believe this is still continuing, absolute madness. I can get a search in once a week, but how do people even post things? How is there anyone close to the guy telling him WTF is going on.

I finally cut the cord today from calguns...just canceled my recurring payments... if they get back on their feet I'll probably re-subscribe to support the community, but it has just been too painful the past few months....

This needs to happen for the owner to notice and do something as simple as communicate. It's really sad how he's treating long standing members/community.

I can't say for sure either way, but given the challenges just keeping the site running, I don't think so.

I agree. I don't think he would know how to sell the data. I think at this point its just collecting forgotten subscriptions. Doesn't seem like anything is going on and the owner isn't bothering to say anything.
