The owner used a hosted vbulletin solution that was working and chose to leave the service because it was too expensive. The software vendor is not responsible for on-premise solutions. I'm not sure why people are pointing to vbulletin. There's a lot of problems that's not software related, its configuration, data, and traffic management. There are problems with the software, but there are sites that have double the members/posts that run without an issue. It's really a site management issue with a lot of tech debt.

Hi CAGuns!

I did already post this to CaLguns & know some of you ended up here, so of course wanted to spread the news here.

Few things for everyone:

1) I am - and we should all be - extremely grateful to the owner of this beautiful & wonderful CAGuns.net forum (ikeo1)
for getting this up & running and giving us more options, and a refuge.

I in no way endorse any one site over the other;
I simply know a lot of CaLGunners ended up here & wanted to let you guys know.

Several members have reached out to me for updates, so I wanted to post this great news that we're making progress & you should already see a big improvement at CaLguns.net, and hopefully these fixes should be PERMANENT!!!


2) Please help spread this message far & wide. I know the "natives are getting restless" - I'm right there with ya!

3) I posted a thread a while back offering to donate my I.T. services & expertise to fix CalGuns permanently, and Kestryll gladly accepted!
He's been extremely polite, kind, gracious, professional; a true pleasure to work with. No wonder CG has grown so well under his stewardship!
I truly give him a lot of kudos; esp. in a public forum like this, it is very difficult to admit when you need help & to ask for help. It is very hard.
Let's all recognize & applaud that.


4) My team & I have been working and are still working hard & fast to find and permanently resolve the issues plaguing our beloved CalGuns.net site.

I've been a member for - man.... I had to go check; since 12/2005!!! Damn near 20 years!
This forum & its members have truly been a blessing to me, and instrumental in my life & passion for guns.
My point in all this is to emphasize that I care a LOT about BOTH of these forums, and all all of you. Truly.
(Yes, even YOU....... you know who you are.... )


5) Kes & I are acutely aware of how much this disruption & downtime sucks. Truly.
I'm pleased to say that there is a lot of light at the tunnel, and the end of this yucky tunnel seems quite close!
AKA: we're very close to resolving these issues!
Your patience, grace & understanding are appreciated.
Both Kes & I (as with most of you) have very busy professional & personal lives, so we are working extremely hard to get this done as quickly as possible, while not endangering our day jobs, families, etc.
They can all suck it up a LITTLE bit, for a little while, but you get it....

6) Just over the past couple days, we've identified & already resolved a few issues.
For me personally, on multiple different devices & locations, the site seems WAY faster, more stable, etc. Huge improvement. Night & day better.


7) Please bear with us & be kind, but we do need honest, helpful & constructive feedback as to how the site is running for people, so if you want to post updates & feedback at CaLGUNS, that would be really helpful. (Not here; CaLguns.net)
As always, the more detailed & specific, the better.
If you can include as much info as possible, that is helpful; Mac or PC, OS version, what browser you are using, and any specific errors / issues are useful. Screenshots are great too!


8) If you are still having troubles with the site, BEFORE posting about it, please do the following:
a) Restart / reboot your device. Turn it off & back on. That applies to everything; laptops, desktop, cell phones, tablets; reboot the darn thing!
b) clear your browser cache. (Ask here if you need help)
c) Ensure you know & have your current CalGuns login / password, and then delete any cookies ONLY for CalGuns.net - instructions below.
d) Restart your internet / ISP modem / router. The little box that broadcasts the WiFis.... pull the power, let it sit at least 30-45 seconds (yes, it's important), then plug back in & wait ~3-5 min for it to fully boot back up.

(Definitely recommended clearing only calguns cookies, vs. mass deleting all / multiple cookies!!)

He made some improvements but the issues on the site run pretty deep. I wouldn't expect much, but it seems like .org is back up and running, but on the same dated software. I seriously doubt any real upgrades are happening.

For S&G’s I tried to get to the simple home page of the failure Calguns several times over the past few days, but not even that worked. Is that site still truly around, or is it just bread crumbs and remnants? A homeless beach bum ******** in the shower is likely more reliable at this point.

Thanks. My perspective is it is still a very long way from "up and running", perhaps you are being polite or generous. With such a hot mess, Kes must have considered bringing a "lesser" version live to recapture his lost audience- while concurrently/in the background doing CPR on what can be salvaged. The delay means that audience grows & gets momentum on other sites, like CAGuns. Feels like he's just given up due to no communication with viewers.

OP, if you have the time, please fix the button on CalGuns that says “New Threads”. My understanding is that button should say “New Posts”. I’m sure a lot of people use that button to find new posts since they last visited. I do.

I really, REALLY, **REALLY** want to apologize for the delay in updates.
I'm just so terribly sorry guys.
It is not acceptable and I fully understand how much both these sites mean to all of us.

Please rest assured;
Kestryll & I HAVE been working on this,
We absolutely have NOT forgotten / given up / nothing of the sort.

We both do have very full & busy personal lives (as do all of you here!!) and are doing CG as a passion, but we have to feed our families + keep roofs over our heads. Most nights, at least.

I in particular have 2 young children AND run a business, so I hope you can understand just a bit that I get pulled in a zillion directions.
I've also had some family & work commitments that have taken me out of town a lot more than usual, so that's been adding to all of it.

TL;DR:
We're still working on CaLGuns.
It seems that the issue might be a resource one overall and we might need to re-design the way the site is hosted / how many servers / etc.
We're evaluating options because obviously none of this comes free.

I believe Kes & I are meeting with my technical team this week, so I will try much harder to post an update after that.

I'm really, truly sorry for the delayed reply.
I haven't even been lurking / reading on either of these forums - nor anywhere else - because I've been so busy with work, life, and helping Kes.

CGN is not your company, as a volunteer, I’m very empathetic with your efforts. You don’t owe people an apology, that should come from the Kestryll.

There's a user who signed up on September 4th with a similar name. The first three letters are the same but it ends in -trel. Maybe it's a coincidence.

I sold a lot of stuff thru CalGuns, and then they went wonky---looking forward to having both websites available!

Ironically, I just got a gateway timeout after refresh it came back up.

Still got some work to do, but i did notice you've improved performance & stability ~47%.
