Does anyone really use these giant packs

I find bags that large to be too heavy and unwieldy when packed, unless it's something bulky like blankets or a sleeping bag, but those just go in my seabags for camping and such.

But I don't backpack or backcountry camp, I tent camp with a cot for my bones and wife's sake.

I have friends who backpack, but they don't use these style, they use much lighter weight framed packs since they usually are counting literal ounces

Holy smokes I just looked at that 2nd link, the 105+liter bag, the Terminator pack. That would terminate anyone's back lol. That thing is ridiculous, but I'm sure there's plenty of uses for it. Maybe big outdoor gear where a pelican case isn't practical, idk though lol

Edit: The youth group and college geology groups my dad used to camp with could definitely find uses for that massive pack. Teenage backs and energy levels and all that

Seabags, you were Navy too? lol I have one I got issued for deployment made by LBT but not sure where it went.... was pretty cool and unique. They have a lot of bags on sale and I thought maybe getting something more serious than my F5 Switchblade wouldn't hurt while they're 'cheap' but some of the bags are insane or maybe too specialized because I'm not going out with some 10k sniper rifle to hunt a Moose either and I'm not an Army Ranger behind enemy lines for a week.

The Terminator bag is insane

That first one is close in weight to the same sized pack but with an internal aluminum frame and specific torso sizing from REI, so I don't think anyone is using them for serious backpacking. https://www.rei.com/product/242872/rei-co-op-traverse-60-pack-mens

Tacti-cool more than anything, in my opinion.

And I love a good backpack or bag lol

Yeah, former Navy too

I loved my seabag so much I bought another one or three from a military surplus store. You can find them still for $20 or so and they are pretty damn indestructible and versatile

I've found that the simplest bags are the ones I use the most.

Typically one big pocket, and maybe a couple small ones to empty my pockets into in the airport or car or camp

Dude this is what you need to complete the gray man out fit not a oversized bag

ended up getting the freefall 3000 after looking at reviews, that price is too good to pass up and the grey color hit low stock an hour ago so I got the FOMO haha. Guess I have to go camping now

Don't even get me started on packs. I probably have 15 of them in all sizes. Monster packs I've only used for camping to transport things. Hiking and general purpose packs are all typically around "1 Day" size.

15 wow; I thought having 3-4 backpacks was making me an insane person, and one was issued by the govt free lmao

So the Eberlestock is nice right

I just know from Tarkov xD

I was Army Infantry. We did carry similar with sleeping bag and mat and all, on top of our weapons and ammo. For me it was this pack + a 81mm mortar baseplate/bipod/barrel + minimal of 3 - 81mm mortar rounds.

When I was 60mm mortars, it was much easier to ruck. The complete 60mm mortar system was as easy or hard to carry as a single piece of the 81mm mortar.

Only had to ruck few times carry 120mm mortars, and let me tell ya, this was the absolute worst. It was a motherless 🐐 no matter how you looked at the pieces of this mortar equipment.

Isn't there an issued pack
The issued pack with sleeping bag and mat is similar to size of what is pictured.

It had a plastic/polymer frame as well. Not the aluminum frame of the old alice packs.

The alice packs were much easier to carry, as you couldn't load it up as much as the ones I was issued after. The frames dug in, but overall weight carry was much less.

Shoulder straps were the weakest for these packs for mortar squads/platoon. The weight eventually broke the shoulder straps during march, patrol, or everyday use.

Google "USGI GWOT-era M81 Rucksack Full Load" to get an idea what a full combat load rucksack size comparison to what is shown in this thread. For us mortarmen, we carried full load + mortar equipment + regular bravo weapons.

Here's a few, only can put 6 pictures in a collage apparently.

Always trying to find the ultimate pack for what's needed.

Eberlestock definitely makes good packs. They accel in pack wearing comfort more than most. They have breathable zones for your back which helps keep you cool where a lot of other packs either don't consider this at all, or do a crappy job at doing this.

From Top Left to Bottom Right
Camelback Motherlode
Hill People Gear Tarahumara (have 2 of these)
Camelback Talon (have 2 of these)
Eberlestock Gunslinger
TAG Sniper
Eagle Patrol

My Other Packs/Bags:
Camelback BFM
Camelback HAWG
Blackwater Gear 3 Day
Glock multi purpose backpack
Savior Specialist
Savior Pro SEMA Range Pack
Blackwater Gear Duffle
Eberlestock X2

Likely some others I forgot about. The Blackwater Gear 3 Day pack is YUGE, and has molle everywhere so you can add more if/when needed. Same for the Camelback BFM, absolute monster of a pack. I use the Talon, HAWG & Eagle Patrol pack the most outside of the Pro SEMA when going to matches.

In America? Not unless it’s attached to their motorized scooter

I use a large framed eberlestock pack when I go hunting in places that i'll need to quarter and hike out the animal. I collapse and cinch it down small for hiking around and searching for game but being able to have a pack large enough to pack out the meat is critical unless you want to drag a dead animal for miles.

Do people really hike and camp for days on end and use these crazy packs or is it just for the LARP?

Even in the military I don’t think I carried anything bigger than 45L or whatever a sea bag fits

I do the occasional hike and once in a while go on a camping trip. The last thing you want to be hauling around is a ton of extra weight you don't really need. Realistically I don't think the average joe has ever slept outside long enough to need something that big.

I was making fun of that pack until I realized my backpacking/hunting pack is almost 80L, however it weighs only just over 3 lbs (Seek Outside unaweep 4800). I will say that when backpacking in CA you need a bear can which takes up a lot of space so I do use all of that space for 2-3 night trips.
