Implemented GAFS Policy - Editing Sold Listings!

Perhaps a policy where after say 30 days after item marked "sold" (not just $PF, I've had a few transactions that took a long time to finalize a meetup....) only the item, price and maybe a short description would be retained? Not sure how it would work, but I would think that feedback can be given within that time, or it can't be left at all.... that would keep the FB database clean and compact as well as the current live listings.

Then for the historical pricing.... think https://www.genitron.com/Handgun-Database, but limited to the sales in Crazyfornia so as to track our insane roster influenced prices? Again, keep it simple, compact and clean all around!

It might be advisable to keep a hidden stored database of the sold items in case there is a dispute or issue with a firearm coming up stolen or something like that, but it wouldn't need a live query function, only accessible by admins.

Cost control is ALWAYS advisable, as is a monitization plan that will keep it interesting and not a burden.

PS: switched classifieds to grid view..... OOOOOOOOOH..... AHHHHHHH!!!! Veddy nice! I gotta go find some stuff I want to sell!

PPS: If CG is down too much longer, you'll want to prepare for SEO and organic SE traffic causing a FLOOD of new members... "two weeks" is looming!

Unfortunately, this is likely going to be an upgrade feature. It uses 6x more bandwidth because it uses the full res image to achieve that look. Users can use it for now.

Our organic ranking is rising as more content is added so we’re good there. As more places find us and do link backs, that’s what will help us with SEO. If we get featured and linked to the better our ranking will be.

For the historical search we’ll leave it as is. It should be fine. Our DB is tiny right now. It should stay small too because of how we do things. The main thing is the number of listings.

I opened another thread up for questions.

i would prefer the ability to change price but i dont mind a locked listing after the Sale.

reason being, generally speaking, some people will create a post with a high price if they are reluctant to sell, then they will drop the price when they are more motivated to sell,

What i would strongly support is anti-thread crapping - one of the few things that shined in calguns and other various forums "if a price is too high" make a private offer in DMs, or just dont buy it. You dont walk into a store and tell them their product is cheaper on amazon. i know its a slightly different analogy but i hope my point gets across.

1.) You can edit the price. - this discussion is about deleting it after sale. If it gets deleted it'll get reinstated and a warning given.
2.) Here, you can acutally do a sale markdown.

Looks like this.. Nifty ehh?

Already in the rules but as a compromise you can use the emoticons. Only factual representation is allow. Opinions will be moderated.
If you get a :poop: icon, it means people don't like it. Community should have an ability to say without saying. Reason being, we don't want people cluttering up the listings. If there are enough warnings buyer should know. IMO. But no personal opinion.

ah, ok yes, that makes sense! got a vote from me then

yeah i already spot lowballers in the comment section of some of the postings haha.

the best communal say against an abnormal posting price is dead silence lol

Bringing this back up to remind people. As we're seeing a lot of CGN'ers follow calguns rules. We do not allow removing the listing.

You get one warning, 2nd infraction results in Classifieds removal. If you create another account to bypass this and see your account was limited, you will be banned without notification. No Questions.

This was decided before a lot of you got here. We're sorry if you don't agree but those are the rules. Our feedback system is useless without a history.

If you feel differently, we understand. Calguns is still available.

Please let sold prices be visible to everyone. Part of what makes Calguns so annoying is the only price references are the overpriced listings that have not and probably will not sell.
How can we know what the actual sold price was though? The listing price and the sold price is often different as buyers negotiate the price down.

@ikeo1 what if there’s a system where buyer/seller can opt to report the final selling price? (ie: offer both the buyer/seller a sale price input in the Leave Feedback system. Both reported prices can be visible and linked to compare discrepancies too.)

Soon enough, theres going to be a requirement to donate to do anything on this site it seems. Want to post reply? Contributors only!
Like modern cars and making everything subscription based.

The way I see it, the more you restrict people to use the marketplace fairly across the board, people are going to look at other venues.

If this forum turns more pay-to-play > free-to-play, I would think there would be a decline in this forum while people always longing calguns.net to come back online, or use other forums that have a bigger member base.

And the listings you'll mostly end up having is bumped ads, ads from paid members only which probably by then only paid members can buy (but youll probably see the same listing on armslist (phone #) or calguns.net, where outside purchase is possible without dropping extra dimes).

Unless these requirements were set when the forum was first set up, but to have them slowly turn into subscription based as people are currently able to use for free will have more people "wtf'ing" than "let me pull out my wallet to donate" situations.

Just an opinion.

Just for parts, users have the free use of gafs, arfcom, other forums with coverage of US as whole than a paid members club of this CA forum.

And lots of CAians in those other forums.

You know on gafs, they allow thread crapping, or the ability to tell the seller the item is too high, or found cheaper on x or x, or to ask if the seller is out of their minds, etc on the listing itself.

There was a thread here, asking what someone would of done if they saw a lgs ripping off a customer or something.

A few on that thread said, they would speak up including me. That is threadcrapping in a sense.

Actually, some stores, you DO TELL them it is cheaper on Amazon. Sportsmans Warehouse Price Matches Amazon and + like extra 10% off.
Places that Price Match, Price Match Amazon.

This was the case from the beginning. New features that are added on that require CPU, Storage, etc is a paid model. Meaning anything added will go to subscribers first. If there’s enough subscribers, they subsidize free accounts. That’s how it’s working. If system usage isn’t high then it can move down to free. Everything was free to start, but usage is getting a lot higher. That’s why we have limits and throttles

There’s a reason armslist, snipershide are still available and able to keep up with the times and Calguns failed.

Too many people want things for free and ironically it’s many of the same people that complain about people and entitlement.

Arf uses the same model and has memberships that are more expensive up to $100/mo starting at $24/mo just to get an avatar and search.

Also this particular rules is the same policy as GAFS, so I’m not sure what your point is there. Same rule applies to subscribers.

You basically pay for what you use. If more people use it for free than pay then some things have to move to paid. That’s just the nature of a service if it wants to stay around or not.

I don’t have millions or billions of dollars like Reddit or the sponsorships of arf. I’m paying for everything out of pocket, what do you want/expect me to do? I have to build up the site and this was a hobby project. I already have several thousand invested in this and monthly operational costs. I’m not break even yet.

Calguns literally paid $179 for the vb license for 10+ years and hosting costs. Developers are expensive to add features. My cost for licensing and services are significantly higher because than a CGN because they didn’t pay to upgrade or improve. To give you an example. We run 7 cores vs the 8 Calguns is running now. They spend on RAM but our server specs are close.

I made this as a comparison. I would ask you to compare that against any other site you’ve mentioned and you see, we offer more for less on just about every case for what you get.

Can you be specific of what switched that you’re unhappy about? Because I try to make sure that we’re an option and a good one.

I’ll say it again, this site is not enough for me to live off of but has a lot of demands. i need to balance my time and $$ as i do this for fun, but i can see some things changing. So it’s not just you, im aware as well.

We allow an emoji. If you notice I mix some rules. I took what I thought I would want that doesn’t waste time or space. You just do it in a different way here.

In other non-firearms marketplaces most major ones thread crapping is not allowed.

If you look of the date of this, Apr 5 you’ll see this was one of the first discussions before the marketplace became what it is.

You can do that in DM. They have the right to ignore you. Believe it or not people still do this anyways regardless what I say.

Let me ask you this way. What would you do if you were me?

Would you stop development and security advancement to keep the site free? Should I not moderate when people bicker and allow them to cuss and say whatever until a physical threat or racial slur is used? What standard would you want? Admittedly, i/we hold people to a higher standard here. Is that wrong?

Please don’t take offense, I feel not everyone understands or knows what has to go into a site like this. I’m open to justifying things as it’s a window behind every other service. This site is very over engineered with the hopes that it’ll grow into it.

I’ve kept costs as low as I can and I turn over the subscriptions/donations to more features because they pay for it. I have not drawn a single dollar from this. I had to form a LLC, get legal help, pay LLC tax, etc, accounting , bookkeeping etc. none of that is free

My only comment is that I’d prefer not to have my home advertised on the internet for all eternity. I’d prefer to be able to remove my location once an item has been sold or traded.

It’s already easy enough to figure out who people are but I’m not trying to make it even easier for them.

I was just giving an opinion on the subscriptions for forum uses.
The forum has the same rules. If you review enough items you can have the edit time limit lifted for free. Some badges are free. Subscriptions don’t really benefit on the forum side. Other than fewer ads. FFL badge is currently free too.

We’ve been discussing making the minimum requirement title, price and picture. We only use this for the feedback system so it means something.

I also want people to know we will be profitable soon. We’re just about to turn the corner. The startup costs were really high but should settle after a year then be more consistent. I’m whining about it now, but we’re ok. We will be upgrading the web servers with an additional core soon. Traffic continues to rise.

I get needing a location for a sale, I won’t open a listing if the location isn’t close to me, I’d just like to remove my location once a sale is complete. My location isn’t relevant for historical sales data.
