One thing for sure is that you will never make everybody happy. For sure we really don't need the guy that wants to pic a thread fight with someone on almost every visit. That is a quick way to get people off the topic that was the initial point of the thread.

Man o man. When I joined Calguns in 2012, I wanted to buy a gun but had heard it was hard. The wealth of knowledge helped me so much, I gave back to the site however I can.

I was much more a student and lurker than a participant or sales in Calguns forums.

Now when I want to look something up, someone asks a questions or posts a link and after a few posts the thread starts to get off topic and then the drivel starts and it goes downhill from there.

After a while I didn’t care about anything but the sales forum. I didn’t feel a sense of comradery for helping people (in general) but did for people teaming up on others. Starting in off topic and then slowly spilling out to the other forums.

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CONTAINED GUYS!!

Having looked at off topic recently, now more than ever I say HELLLLLLLL NOOOOOOO and not because I’m a 🐙, have DTS, a libtard or whatever the hell they accuse people of there who have a difference of an opinion.

The proof is in the pudding!! We have many examples, shoot, some sited here of forums souring with an off topic (or off topic like) forum section.

Now those people want to bring it here? Naw.please don’t!! We don’t want it or need it!

I’m trying to get people to go shooting and having fun in socal and our local ranges. And all disciplines!

Let’s goo shooting better!

And I’m not a dem, or a sjw, or a 🐙. I’m just a guy that has his own problems that loves to shoot to release stress and have fun 🤦🤷‍♂️.

Anyway. Rant over.

Edited out all my sentimental bs 🤣😜

I mean; is any of what he said FALSE, or is it merely OFFENSIVE / scary to some people?
Well, let's go through the statements that I quoted above, and for each of them everyone can determine for themselves whether they are false or true. For statements that are calls to action, instead feel free to determine whether they are desirable. And some of the statements are about the quoted user's mental state, which we can't evaluate:
  • I feel like a caged Gorilla right about now
  • I'd love nothing more, than to crack some f'ing liberal skulls
  • Cracking f'ing liberal skulls is desirable and should be done
  • Liberals have f'ing skulls, not regular skulls.
  • The recent shooting at a Trump rally was an evil/liberal assassination conspiracy attempt
  • There exists an evil/liberal conspiracy
  • Trump is our true CIC/POTUS, life
  • The evil liberal mother fu*kers are given free rein to attack our Country (our Freedoms)
  • This should be a warning to everyone, meaning we need to take action against the evil liberal mother fu*kers
  • CalGuns OT are (at least some) weak pathetic liberal pussies
  • These weak pathetic liberal pussies only care about the f*cking Ukraine
  • Here in America, our Country/Freedoms are being systematically destroyed
  • And they are being destroyed by these filthy self-serving Treasonous MF'S
Nearly all the things said here are about politics, in the widest sense. Whether the above statements and instructions are true of false depends on everyone's personal views. But to your second question, whether they offensive or scary, here is my personal opinion: No, I don't find them scary at all; I think that person and all his fellow travelers do not pose a serious risk to either me or our society by doing violence. While political violence does exist in the US, it is not now (and never has been and isn't likely to become) of a scale that threatens my personal safety, or the survival and functioning of society and the state. There is a grave threat to our political system, but it doesn't come through violence, but through polarization, leading to disrespecting and ignoring the truth, societal norms, and the law.

Do I find these statements offensive? Absolutely not. Because they reflect the opinion of not just one person, but a significant fraction of the population. And honestly, it doesn't matter to me whether they are expressed with swear words or in fancy English. I have a very high tolerance for people speaking their mind, and I'm a free speech advocate in pretty much all realms.

What I do find offensive is outright lies. In particular in form of bad advice on legal questions. But offensive doesn't necessarily mean that speech should be prohibited; I think wrong statements in that realm should be argued and corrected.

The question we are discussing here in this thread is not whether the above statements (and many other similar ones) are true or false, or whether they are offensive, perhaps depending on using swearwords or the King's English. What we are discussing is whether in this particular forum they should be allowed or not. The reason this is an important question is that certain forms of speech make a discussion hard or impossible. What do you say to someone who advocates "cracking f'ing liberal skulls"? That this would be a crime, punishable under sections X, Y and Z of the California penal code? That political violence is not the answer and doesn't make our society work better? That cracking f'ing conservative skulls is also a good idea? That the statement is out of order because of the f-bomb? Is there any expectation that arguing with this particular poster is going to change his mind? That having a discussion about cracking skulls will make any difference whatsoever? That a constructive debate is possible when some forum members don't argue the points, but suggest cracking the other members' skulls?

To the question whether forum posts should be edited (modified) by moderators, rather than deleted, let me offer the following suggestion, which stems directly from the previous discussion.

If a post makes a statement that is false and bad advice, it should be edited to clearly show that it is incorrect, and the correct answer should be added right there. This helps teach the poster the error of their ways. Here's an example (intentionally ridiculous so we don't need to argue the details of the law here):
Open carrying a loaded handgun is allowed without permit, but only if the gun is caliber 50BMG, or the person has a 50BMG rifle with them too.
Edited by moderator Joe-Bob: No, open carrying is in general prohibited in urban areas, 50BMG handguns are completely illegal, and 50BMG rifles are treated as AWs and need to be registered, and are subject to transportation restrictions in PC 12345.6.

Negative. We won’t edit. That’s been decided and we’ll go it with for now.

There’s no reason to revisit that thread on another board. Please leave that behind. We’re here so we care what’s posted here and not how we compare to there.

Thank you.

As forums go, this seems to be pretty good so far. I've only seen one post on here that went something like this:

A ; I think this thing is the thing to do/have.

B ; You think that because you're an blithering idiot with poor genetic makeup and questionable parentage.

A ; You think yourself free to sully my good name because you hide behind a computer screen. Were you in my actual presence, I would be compelled to box you about the face and head. Heidy-ho, fragment!

B ; Scoundrel! Blaggard!

You get the idea. If someone's not mature enough to disagree in a civil manner, they should find another board, or be asked to leave the club.

DON'T BE CALGUNS! You literally couldn't open your mouth towards the end without getting a 3-day or more ban. Let people disagree, that's what debate is all about. Just keep the nastiness and personal attacks to an absolute minimum in this place will be great. Oh yeah, let us tell people selling their p365 for $2,700 that they're an idiot without being banished to the wasteland for thread-crapping

We don't mind disagreements, but complaining on the internet and flame wars aren't what we want to have. Nastiness and Personal Attacks is very subjective to people so we opt not to have topics that WE KNOW will go there. Here, we want people to help each other. There aren't enough boards like that anymore.

Thread crapping is a waste of time and resources. You can use an emoji for it as a compromise. It's much less personal and only spends 1 character to say the same thing. Otherwise you get 24 million posts of btt/signatures/bumps/rants and other useless posts slowing down the site that have nothing to do with 2A.

Stop with the millennial rainbows and gumdrops and allow the sensitive babies to grow thicker skins like men please.
The world isn't sugar coated. Sometimes people say things you do not like. Get over it.

PLEASE DO NOT make this place like reddit. JFC that place is pure estrogen and baby whining. That entire website needs a punch in the face.

You know, IMO it’s the people who make the insults are the ones that need to grow thicker skins. For whatever reason, people get so sensitive with moderation. We have a standard we want to keep. Why do rules and decorum equate to estrogen?

To me it’s about maturity, not allowing someone else bitterness to spread because it does. If you saw the topic on OT where I was trying to help, one guys hostility, lead to 4 or 5 jumping in. It’s mind blowing as I give them exactly what the problem is on the site in a list. If I were to start defending myself it becomes a spiral of non-sensical posts. Instead, that told me it’s not for me. I have thick skin, but what reason should I try to help? I shouldn’t right?

The world is what we make of it. If we allow things we get more of it, just like crime. If we don’t allow it, they move on to the places that do. It’s like saying Crime is going to happen, GET OVER IT babies. Or do we say, we have rules and will enforce them. There’s no rainbows here, it’s an internet range with rules. Mutual respect goes in two directions, not one, which is what we ask. Honorable men respect others, Samurai have a code of conduct, those with integrity, etc. There is a time and a place for everything, maturity is knowing where it is allowed and not.

This isn’t Reddit and it’s not CG. We try to meet in the middle where once upon a time we had mutual respect. Back in the day, if you said something disrespectful you’d get punched in the face, or lead to a fight. An internet squabble behind an alias is for 🐱, otherwise they’d use their real names. Here you get your comment deleted. I hope those people don’t cry about it and just understand, that’s just the rules.

Please read the post in the Subscriber zone for exactly why we don’t want certain things as well. There are other more serious reasons too.

Here we go. I hope the mods can keep this type of machismo drama out of this site. We need younger generations to support the 2A. If you get off on bashing others who don't look like you, do it on Calguns. Angry rhetoric is accepted there. This isn't Calguns.

Who is the underrepresented group? Millennials? Curious, how are they “underrepresented”?

I believe specifically in 2A. Many are afraid of pew pews because of all the stereotypes that often come with it. My own family isn’t happy about it but they are ok with it because I show them that good people can own guns to protect our family.

How many young people do you see coming up in 2A? Many are afraid because they have grown up with active shooter drills and are taught from a young age to be afraid.

They need sites like this that show them you don’t have to be all tough and loud to own and use guns. Most of my students are women. Women who want to learn because of the very real threats they face and feel intimidated by other instructors. There are some who don’t mind but the sport really isn’t welcoming, it’s toughen up or get out kinda mentality.

CGN membership was 374k members. Where did they all go? Who’s replacing them, who is coming in? There’s always millions of guns sold every year, but where are they? How can we educate them to be safe and a good citizen? At my range, we’re seeing a lot of new people. Many of us don’t have a history with firearms.

Tactical classes are expensive, so I chose USPSA to learn/educate cheap. The range for shooters is wide. I had ~140 people this past weekend, trying to grow it to 200.

Does the data support that? Percentages look to be smaller but the number of gun owners in the millennial group is greater by volume. Gun sales have tripled during the years they became eligible to purchase. Anecdotally, my gun stores and public ranges are filled with 21-35 year olds. People just don’t hang around forums anymore, with the exception of classifieds. There are faster ways to access information.

Why don’t they hang out in forums like CGN if it is full of history? Many are on Reddit, IG, FB, YouTube. That’s where I was before I made this site. Reddit/FB/IG is very active with younger folks.

The large group you have includes a lot of Gen X’ers. There’s plenty, don’t get me wrong but we want an environment where everyone from all platforms can come and not be hated on. Our niche was the marketplace and organizing information. The hole I saw was of all those platforms information isn’t organized you have to keep searching. A lot of people are finding us more and more from google and other places. Like I said, we’re trying to support 200 competitors on a weekend at my range, I had 140.

Forums, by and large, are going the way of the dodo. It's an older form of communication that has, for the most part, been replaced by social media. As such, I've noticed that they tend to skew older and you'll find people with a helluva lot more life experience(s) than, say, tiktok.

And while most social platforms move at a faster pace, those that are older appreciate the slower pace that forums provide. I personally prefer the format and layout, as reddit and the rest feel... I don't know, a bit chaotic?

All that being said, there are going to be times where subjects, no matter how innocuous, will get someone's dander up. Because the one thing lost on almost all forms of digital communication is inflection. Did you mean to sound like a 🍆head, or were you making an off-color or poorly timed joke? Who knows. We're you being sarcastic or were you being deliberately pigheaded? Again... Who knows? And yeah, those emoticons or whatever can help, but apparently they have their own language too, and I never bothered to learn them because for F-'s sake I'm nearly 50.

Also, 100% not a personal attack, but jesus wept does the phase "pew pews" get my back up. Good christ, we shouldn't have to infantilize an inanimate object to make it "acceptable" to dullards. I understand why it's done in social media settings, but here? If your stated goal is to make new users comfortable with firearms, or introducing them to firearm ownership, start with the proper nomenclature and basic language, and help remove the stigma the media has attached to normal, everyday words. "Gun" isn't a bad word. Neither is "firearm". Help them not be afraid and teach them that being a gun owner doesn't mean you now bear a scarlet letter.
