Is this the new Calguns?

Also lacking here (due to its newness) is the knowledge base. CGN has been around a long time, and there is much knowledge stored there. Plus, no "Off Topic", which is both good and bad. Within CGN resides many experts in diverse fields - auto mechanics, ATV's, HVAC, aviation, law, finance, etc. The OT sub-forum there has helped me a great deal in troubleshooting and repairing a great many things.

It seems the lack of an OT forum here and the preponderance of reddit users has conspired to ensure that some people will forever remain on Calguns. As I am no longer banned from the Calguns OT forum I decided to peruse it and found it wanting. The knowledge base in the C&R forums, gunsmithing forums, and reloading forums is quite valuable; and some of that knowledge base (or the bearers of such) are spending time here as well. Even the hunting forum occasionally had some good info. There's no reason the General forum here can't hold such other information (trucks, cars, ATVs, HVAC, etc.) should such specialists find themselves on this site.

Admittedly, as I've become increasingly frustrated with Calguns' uptime I find myself spending more time here. I have no doubts there are certain personalities that will simply never come over, finding this site too liberal/progressive/🍌 for them. It seems that the Calguns site performance is getting better every day. Whether that's due to decreased traffic or increased capacity is unknown to me.

Is this the new Calguns? Likely not since some of the allure of Calguns is being a right wing (by CA standards anyway) safe space, and those requiring such a safe space are unlikely to come here.

Whatever, I just want to talk about reloading, C&Rs, and hunting; and cowboy action shooting (but I do that elsewhere).

You mentioned the General section, It's similar to off topic, isn't it...aside from the polotics and religion rule...and hopefully its more civil.

Calguns has a General Gun discussion area which was/is intended for talking about gun related stuff that didn't fit into a sub category or that should have a wider audience than one of the more specific subs. In that sense it was not supposed to be like Off Topic sans religion/politics.

CAguns has a General Discussion area which would seem to fit the bill of 'OT without the religion or politics', at least in my mind. I don't see why subject matter experts would be any less eager to discuss their areas of expertise in the General Discussion forum here than they would be in the Off Topic forum on Calguns, but I may be misguided.

There are people who want to discuss politics, religion, whatever; and for them General Discussion doesn't hack it and so they have no outlet on this site.

Its really a wonder in this age of tech Calguns just can't seem to keep the lights on...really not sure what the problem actually is....
The problem and Kes and people trying to help but are too busy. Well don't help because there was a line of people ready to help. Calguns.net is dead it will just be a bunch of boomers arguing with each other about the olden days at the end if it ever comes back.

That's a great point. I assume it takes quite a bit more effort to moderate that sort of stuff and emotions can get pretty heated, so its understandable....but who knows for sure why the excluded these topics. The passion brings in more users in but maybe not the type the SYSOP wants--who knows.

The existence of OT has been discussed here a few times. I, for one, am not sad that it doesn't exist. I come here to talk about gun things. I can talk about pointy elbows and belittle people outside of my political spectrum on other websites if I really feel a need to (which I don't).

I’ve been upfront about why we don’t want it.
  • Moderation overhead - people get into big discussions that turns personal and kills the vibe of the entire board.
  • It's a big use of resources - OT takes up nearly 50% of the posts. I do not want to pay for storage or bandwidth and has little to do with the actual subject of firearms
  • We do not have a big content library. We're focused on building our library and looking for what tools the 2A community wants
  • Political discussion + Firearms means a lot of eyes we don't want to associate with
  • We're a small team and don't want to spend time of moderating circular arguments no one will win since opinions are your own.
  • We want to spend our time on community building not division. 2A is niche enough
  • We can focus on improving site functionality
  • The site performs faster and has a better vibe to it.
The list goes on and on. CGN also exists already so there's more than enough places to go discuss whatever you want. I think it shows when you focus on the site and community vs when you don't.

I was a member on Calguns for over 10 years. It used to be great, but eventually it fell apart like a cheap watch. Once the out-of-state OT crowd took the guns out of Calguns, it was destroyed as a California 2A site. I gave up on it about a year or so ago. I heard about this forum recently at a match. It was described as “the new Calguns, only better.” So far, I like what I see. As long as the focus remains on guns, the shooting sports, and California gun owners, this site will only get better and better.

I like this site so far. No place like home tho (calguns). I have purchased several off roster items from there and never a bad experience. Traffic is a little low here but its soooo much easier and user friendly. I like to think of caguns as the new school. Calguns more for the old school. Either way both awesome sites!

Nothing beats joining a club and learning from shooters you admire whose skills you want to emulate. I learned more that way than I ever did from Calguns. Some reloading advice to where to get good gun deals to finding people to work on my pistols. I found that Calguns like many Web activities is mainly just a distraction. This is my subjective personal experience. I started to realize that if I spent as much time dry firing as I did surfing the Internet, I’d be a lot better.

I bounce between the 2 but now that calguns has been back up and running flawlessly the private sales ads have been more frequent postings than on here but I use both in my hunt for certain items.

Calguns works intermittently, mostly in the evening hours. Between CAguns and Calguns, my gun pr0n needs are satisfied.
oh damn ya I've tried to login for months without luck and even saw reddit posts about it being dead. I had thought they meant it got deleted permanently by their server hosts or something. Interesting to know it still exists but just in a zombie like dream state.

It's beyond me what the problem even is in 2025! the internet is nothing new!

I remember you from the hunting forum on Calguns. Nice to see you over here.

Calguns transplant here myself too. Nice to see you over here as well.

Asking because I would like to learn more, and would like to know; how is this site more liberal/progressive/🍌?

I didn't say it IS.

I said some calguns diehards see this forum as too liberal/progressive/🍌.

If you hop over to the calguns general or OT forums you'll see a few threads (they seem to be aging out so are going away) calling this site out as liberal/progressive/🍌.

This comes up more often than I’d like..

Too often people become buzz kills, when there’s a lot of us who just like to shoot guns for fun and enjoyment…

Out and about at the PGA tour expo doing some business but wanted to mention his site is about enjoying what you do for fun…

Some people take life too seriously and forget there are people out there that have fun doing what they do to relax.

This pic has nothing to do with guns but there’s someone out there that’s going to buy this because they worked hard and want to enjoy it. It’s totally over the top but good for whoever can afford this. While many of us struggle there’s someone out there ready to buy this because rich folks are getting rich af.
