That check will end up as unclaimed property, escheated back to California, then allocated to the CA DOJ's anti-gun budget. Thanks for screwing us over by throwing away your postcard, pal! /s
You're not far off. Seriously. The amount of the settlement is what it is, and it's divided up as dictated by the court. When the settlement checks are sent out, there's a specified amount of time to cash it. Those funds that were were not able to be dispersed have to go somewhere. You are correct in that the funds might become unclaimed property and eventually be turned over to the state. Depending on the decision of the court, the funds might also go to a Cy Pres distribution. All the unclaimed funds are given to a non-profit organization whose goals closely align with those of the plaintiff. It's conceivable that these funds would go to a consumer safety or firearms education organization. If you want to stand up and flip the bird to The Man, throw the postcard in the trash, cash the check when it comes, and then donate the money to a worthy group, like the CRPA or caguns.net.
