... Maybe shaming IS better??

why not simply ignore the shaming?
Shaming a specific person and their pricing is a far cry from a price one thinks might be too high, which may not even be objectively true.

The former is direct and personal, and the latter is passive and not directed at anyone.

I knowingly set prices a little high (like Towelie) when I sell something in-demand, and I adjust accordingly if I get no interest. I factor in general demand, market price, roster status, wait time where applicable, condition, wear, and the number of watchers.

Guys, just set a max price filter for the gun you want and save your search.

a lot of the things aren't out of the price range I'm looking in they just are out of the price range that will be conducive to a sale and they sit there for a year clogging the arteries of cyberspace

I guess I use a combination of keywords and price filters to take out all the noise

if you read my earlier comments, I have found that the keyword search is broken and leaves things out. Try inputting "1911" and then "1911 9mm" and notice there are a handful of pistols in the second search that were not in the first even though they have "1911" in the title.

So interestingly when I brought up that the keyword search was broken (leaving out results that should be showing up) one of the mods looked into it and found that it's likely a database error based on some words being too common due to the large database. None of this has been confirmed as the cause but my own experience with databases tells me it's highly likely, they do weird things as they get larger. By that logic though having less spam ads would go towards solving the broken search function.

I'm not sure why you are offended by what I'm saying to the point of making personal attacks but you are going on the ignore list. You are literally trying to shame me into conforming to your view which is the exact thing you are trying to critique me about
Oh the irony is lost on you...but then you will never see this since I'm on your ignore list😥

What happens if you use "1911" as the keyword but use the checkbox for "9mm" in the Caliber list?

the market is broken if someone doesn't lower their price after a year, that's the point of this conversation

You're fixated on an individual's prices, which is not "the market". The market is the whole gun market in a given ecosystem, like this forum. The market will generally correct for low or high pricing, but an individual who doesn't respond to delusionally high pricing is an outlier.

There are always outliers, and they're called "outliers" because it's not the market, or even the average. Most reasonable people understand (eventually) when their products are priced too high for demand.

Most.

In fact, having this stay up is a feature of markets, where you can actively see, yes, this price is too high and nobody has bought this even after a whole year. It's very good information for the price ceiling.

that's the question though, are they really outliers? that's the entire reason I was thinking about this topic, I was just seeing the same ads every day for months. I don't know the stats because there is definitely survivorship bias at play i.e. the ones you see are the ones you think about most. But fro instance in Northern Ca yesterday there were ~20 new ads put up and ~1600 existing. Now if you go to the very end there are several pages of ads that haven't been updated in a year so they don't really count, but there are 79 pages of ads that have been updated in the past week. The first 30 pages were all made in the month of June but then that leaves 37 pages of ads more than a month old. pages 47 to 77 are more than 2 months old. So by the numbers the most common category of ad is more than one month old, or we could say that there are as many ads less than one month old as there are more than 2 months old. It's tricky though because as Ikeo pointed out, this is a revenue stream for the site and it costs money to keep the lights on, so I see why the site runs as it does so it's unlikely that anything will change. It's still interesting though.

All seriousness, I get what OP is saying, it was the approach of “Shaming” that got me riled up.

The truth is, I’ve had items take three-six months to sell, even though at the time I had some of the, if not lowest prices. Everyone who was interested lived two hours plus away, locals tried lowballing on a ridiculous low price to begin with giving me a sob story, etc

It’s not always the asking price that keeps an item up, sometimes you have to wait for the right buyer who’s looking for a specific item.

I go to local gun stores and see the same used guns sitting there for years, not bad prices, just no one is interested in that specific item at this time.

I guess what is fair, how long does someone get to keep their listed items for sale before it is removed? But “Shaming” is a no starter, people will get ugly fast and it will only feed the trolls.

Agreed on the shaming as a poor method for "price control" and totally agree that price is not the only factor.

The market dictates demand, and this includes anything that affects demand; popularity of certain models, press affecting company/gun reputation, laws or pending law, trends, novelty, distance of a given seller to buyer pool, etc.

If a great restaurant is in the middle of nowhere, it would predictably have less business than one in a populated metro area or other destination.

The Bodyguard 2.0 is hot right now because it's new, tiny, and shoots way better than it should despite some QoL (quality of life) and quality-control issues with the sights and safety. The reviews have been glowing despite some minor issues.

Either way, I'm glad the site doesn't embrace price-shaming as a form of haphazard price-regulation.

I think the best strategy is not shaming but sincere communication via DM. Not everyone rssponds to shaming in predictable fashion, and some can react very badly.

I will always favor a buyer with whom I've communicated and who writes well and respectfully versus the obvious lowballer or reckless/sloppy tire-kicker.

If I like the person and they approach in the way most respectful humans do, they're going to get my best price. They may be the only buyer to whom I want to sell, even if I have a few backups.

Plus, a pleasant pre-sale text and/or voice exchange bodes well for the PPT experience.

Even if there's no transaction from a DM, you might make some friends.
