I would generally agree and thats what we were doing, but i don't have time to moderate every post immediately. My work is picking up and I don't see this as a full time gig that can financially sustain a lifestyle. It's a volunteer thing that takes a surprising amount of time.

I thought about this a bit and I'm ok with auto modding slurs.

Playing "devils advocate" here. Why is it important for people to be able to curse in online forums? I dont see an issue expressing viewpoints without cursing. Also dont see how being free to curse has anything to do with gun culture or masculinity. This discussion seems like a tactic to test/push the boundaries in this forum and turn it into the unhospitable drama-laden atmosphere of the dying calguns.

Yes, i do like to disarm the language, you get the point but different term. Turn off the filter and it goes back.

We won't become inhospitable. We have rules here. There is also a line we won't cross. The main issue I can see from CGN, is over time to becoming desensitized to it. That's one of the reasons we make some compromises. If the compromise isn't enough, then use another system.

Some people just talk like that. I used to but had to adjust as I moved up the ladder. It depends on the company you keep. Generally speaking the higher you go, the less they curse but it’s a courtesy and a means not to distract.

If we’re on the golf course or range it’s different. If I own/operate a business, I want to run it clean & professional, but client etiquette is dependent on upbringing.

In my experience working with 7-10 figure businesses the higher you go, the less they swear, again generally speaking.

I have to say, if we're going to treat everyone like kids here, I'll just go back to CGN. The censoring things because they might hurt someone's feelings is a little much, that's exactly how this country has ended up in our current position, everyone is walking on eggshells because nobody has a spine anymore. Words are inanimate objects and cannot hurt you.

Trust me when I say I don't need to call you names to insult you, but that isn't what this is about. It's about having a place we can shoot the breeze with the guys and be ourselves, same as I'd want to have at the gym, the range or gun shop. I don't think anyone wants to see this forum turn into a show of name-calling and personal attacks, but this isn't the Walt Disney site either, it's a gun forum, and a certain level of adult-themed humor/language/content is going to inherently come with the territory. Either way you feel about it, that's why Ikeo thankfully added my request for a profanity filter so you can turn it on or off to your preference. Problem solved, everyone is happy.

Maybe our perspectives are different. The people I consider men don't really swear and kids are the ones that don't understand rules. I think we treat people like adults and adults should have discipline. I'm good with respectful banter. One thing though, you can enable/disable the filters here, you can't over at CGN, its been censored for a long time.

Lack of moderation stunts growth and also kills.. The trick is the balance. What people consider balance is subjective. Everyone wants their way vs consensus and/or compromise. This group has very strong opinions and loves to preach strength/weakness as the reason. It's difficult to operate a site like this because its a very diverse group with one common theme, we all enjoy 2A.

When level heads discuss and reasons are good without a lot of emotion. You can solve a lot of problems. I appreciate this kind of discourse and why I oblige, where I think we have a solution for both. I will have to make some tough decisions, but hopefully you guys trust I'm trying my best to be reasonable.

This site isn't about the 1st Amendment though. I consider it a professional courtesy, its just the things I'm used to. I'm not used to running anything with people saying whatever they want and people getting into pissing matches. This is very different for me.

I've seen a lot of people constantly mention the 1st Amendment, is that supposed to extend into private business?

We really try not to over moderate but we also don't want to go beyond the scope of the site. Let me ask you, what's the best way to accomplish that if you had an idea and other's told you 1st amendment says I have the right to say what I want. Honestly looking for other perspectives.

I don’t see a problem with “cursing” in general conversation. For instance, it’s allowed on BARF, another forum I frequent.

But when cursing is directed to one member directly, I draw the line.

We all use swear words in our daily lives. Why not here?

That's because I can see elements of that already. Like i said, this all started because a CGN'er of all people, complained. Monitoring the boards as often as i do right now, I can tell you with pretty good certainty it would turn into CGN OT rather quickly. There are already several threads on this, OT, moderating, etc. already.

If you saw, the censor only went in yesterday after a complaint. Meaning, it was generally ok, but I don't have the time to moderate 24/7. Please re-read the comments I made in this thread. You're making it sound like or assuming I had the rule in place since the beginning. I also spent some time to put in an option for both. Yet, you're still talking to me as if I'm not allowing it and 1st amendment or 1984. Hence my question back to you because it comes up in other threads about why can't they talk about other things?
