One in the chamber or no?

To each their own to take their own calculated risks. I’m a newb with my CCW and EDC a Ruger LCP Max w/o safety. I carried with the +1 until I recently saw the vid of dude shooting his nard.

After lots of internal debating I decided to carry unloaded understanding that I’ll need to be hyper vigilant and have two hands avail.

The trade-off is that I protect myself from myself. I don’t train a lot and I can be clumsy at times.

I know I’ll eventually progress back to +1, as I started, but after I EDC a compact with a safety then back to where I started.

I do trust a pistol to not fire by itself. I don’t trust myself that much, yet.

One in the chamber for sure. Another former cop carried without one in the chamber and tried to get involved in the Idaho In N Out shooting, it didn't work out too well for him

It’s not 1970 anymore, no one should be teaching, or carrying on an empty chamber. Most modern firearms have a FPS, or lightweight firing pin with stiff spring to be drop safe, etc.

Proper training and practice to ensure you sweep clothing away from holster when reholstering (especially on Glock style handguns) will ensure no NDs.

I was curious why there was no real chatter about the other responding shooter except that he was former LEO. Makes sense now.

Great example. The Idaho shooting is an extremely recent example and exactly why you would always carry with one in the chamber. The exact reasons why people say not having one in the chamber is a horrible idea all happened to the former LEO, pretty much every single one, except for him actually dying, which he came very close to doing.

To be fair, that off-duty LEO in Idaho had ample opportunity to draw and charge his weapon before he started hunting for the active shooter.

He thought he might've been mistaken by LEO's for the shooter though, so he didn't draw his weapon or make it hot, though he easily could've and kept it concealed until it was needed.

That said, he turned a corner at speed and unfortunately ran right into the shooter, so he might've gotten a shot off or not, hard to say after taking a rifle round?

Again training comes into play. He should have sliced the pie on a blind corner even if his weapon was not out with an active shooter.

Ideally you’d want your draw to be in the low 1 second range from concealment. Racking in a round in seconds is too slow several times over.

No need to be apologetic or beat yourself up. There are many who are very capable while carrying a gun in either condition. And there are many who overstate their position on public forums as a way of boosting their egos and their mediocre skills.

Don't feel bad. But I think if you realize that if you train yourself better, and increase your skill, the fear is going to decrease. It's like driving a car or riding a motorcycle, pretty awkward and scary feeling at first - but after years of training and classes and racing I can drive with my eyes closed while sliding around practically.

Firearms are the same, train more so you have the confidence in yourself and your equipment.

You can also carry a CCW with a manual safety variant, like the M18, P365's.. 2011, etc

Active self protection has numerous videos where people failed to properly rack the slide or didn't have time or simply forgot in the heat of the moment and it cost them either their lives or the perp got away.

I'd say, no amount of training will prepare you for the exact time you will need to use your firearm for a self defense situation and having to add another step that can be fumbled is not ideal. Training can, however make it easier or less of an issue, but I'd rather have time on my side

I might be the one of the few that doesn't carry one in the chamber although I used to carry one in the chamber back in the days and even now I recommend people to do so. I have two kids under 5 and they are very clingy to me. I trust my handguns but don't trust my kids to accidentally pull something as they can't see what's under my shirt even though I know very well that the trigger is hidden in the holster. I train like that as well so that it's in my muscle memory to rack after drawing from holster. Like you said, to each their own because everyone has different circumstances. At the end of the day at least it's better than not carrying at all.

200% agree that I can't fix this by training. My target for now is to minimize the "time loss", until of course the kids are bigger and then I can just yell at them lol.
