Toyota truck issue/ lemon law advice?

Toyota has a test for 2022-2024. it uses sensors and a hammer. if the engine is no good, the test will say so. Also, not all of the tundra engines have failed, its a certain production group that has failed quality control.
Dealerships are usually privately owned, or some are owned by corporations.

how do I know this stuff, I worked at a Toyota dealership as a Technician.
 
If your engine isn’t blown up just wait for engine, I have a 22 limited and I just got my new engine last week, mine was available but I put it off to get as many miles my truck had 60k miles and 1k on new engine last week, now I basically got a new running truck… just wait it out also trading it in with new engine will increase the value as I also went to different dealers before the recall and after

Horrible advice, dumbass coworker did exactly what you’re saying (didn’t pay for Mexico insurance add-on) and car got stolen, just like he planned and told insurance he never went to Mexico. He was upside down on car and wanted a quick way out.

Fast forward a few months after claim, insurance company figured out his lie (some how through border camera crossing) and his claim was denied. So he owed what the car cost still and didn’t even own the car anymore.

To add insult to injury the insurance contacted his job, and you guessed it, lost his job. Do not know if criminal charges were filed, but I do know he was out a job, a car and still owed the bank.

That was 17ish years ago, probably a hundred times easier now to get info on scammers.

I must have misread I thought the truck needed an engine.

Is there a reason you wouldn’t want to wait it out and try to get a new engine?
 
Assuming you’re in CA along with truck as lemon laws vary state to state… I have gone through a successful lemon law case several years ago and almost went through with one this year so I’ll give you some insight.

First, reach out to ANY lemon law lawyer. You will NOT be responsible for any legal fees. As someone mentioned earlier, the manufacturer will cover ALL legal cost and any lemon law lawyer asking for payment from you is no bueno.

Provide them all your documentation, they’ll look over it and reach out to you if they think you have a case. Once again, THEY SHOULD NOT BE CHARGING YOU.

Secondly, if a lemon law lawyer accepts your case, you will have two options… a new replacement vehicle or your money back. Money back INCLUDES all registration fees and every single cent you paid on purchase agreement MINUS mileage. For mileage, there’s a formula to calculate how much they’ll deduct which you could find Googling. Mileage will be from when the issue INITIALLY started.

Lastly, give the lawyer some time to negotiate with the manufacturer and once they’re done, a check will come your way. Time will obviously vary but for me, it took about 3 months.

I also learned this year that CA passed a statute of limitations for lemon law cases. 6 years I believe. So don’t hesitate and reach out to a lemon law lawyer ASAP. Last thing you want is to be stuck with an inoperable car and having to eat the cost of fixing it over and over.

Patience, young grasshopper.

You're driving around in a truck that you like. In a few months, they're going to buy it back from you for what you paid. In essence, you're driving around in a truck that you won't have to pay for. Driving a free truck for two and a half years seems like a sweet deal. Every day Toyota delays is another day you drive for free.

Maybe they'll come up with a new engine before the deadline. If that's the case, then you get a fresh new engine in your truck. You will have put all these miles on the engine for free. You've extended the life of your truck by two and a half years.
 
My brother had a vehicle that legitimately triggered the lemmon law. The dealer was straightforward to deal with when the vehicle met the criteria set by the law.
 
I am sorry to hear you are having issues. When the Tundra went from a V8 to a tubro charged engine, I crossed the Tunrda off my list of potential trucks. No matter what they say, turbo engines do not and never will last as long as a V8. It was true in the 1970s when my father warned me about turbos and it hasn’t changed no matter how much they say the technology has gotten much better. Both the F150 and Tundras were tanks of a vehicle with their V8 engines. CAFE is what triggered Toyota to get out of the V8 engines and in my opinion was a mistake.

So do you or don’t you currently have an engine issue?
Is your truck in the shop with a blown motor?
Toyota corp is the one doing the buy back?

if you don’t have a current issue and it’s just an open recall drive the truck until toyota replaces the motor or buys the truck back.

if you have a blown motor and no car get a lawyer.

I’m not following I guess, if your trucks not currently broken and toyota corp is getting your buy back processed you’re good to go you just have to wait.

So I do not have an engine issue so far as I know. But the recall went from machining debris to Toyota saying it’s a design flaw and new motor. I don’t mind driving it until Toyota buys it back but they keep moving the goal posts. It’s a pain in the ass to try to find a new truck to replace this truck and keep trying to thread the needle of like sell my truck one week and have something on deck to to buy, because it keeps getting moved.

Plus I’m frankly kind of spooked now that Toyota has foreshadowed, after admitting a design defect and need to recall and replace all these motors, that maybeeeee there’s not a defect and they’ll use a special microphone to listen to your motor and tell if you have the defect or not. Again - like I said before in this thread the biggest issue is I have this truck that has plummeted in value due to this motor defect. I hope they buy it back on 10/21. If that doesn’t happen and they move the goalpost for the third time I’ll hire an attorney
 
Ultimately I guess I understand you guys don’t want to hear me butch about this so let me wrap this up in a semi concise manner. This is my third Toyota. I would have advised you prior to this that I was a Toyota supporter/ enthusiast. I will never buy another Toyota after this.

Let this be a lesson Toyota customer service is essentially like shooting dice. You call the same customer service number over and over and get entirely different responses. Some of the people say sorry but these tundras are junk. Some feign ignorance and claim they’re confused they hadn’t heard of any issues with tundras or turbos period. Some take the middle track and say sorry I just do this for a job while in college and don’t know anything about cars. Not to even touch a n the letters from corporate saying it may not be safe to drive your vehicle call your local dealer for a loaner and your dealer will just laugh and say not our business
 
I had a H3 Hummer with a bad engine. It failed 3x in 6 months. They had defective heads.

I told the dealer I wanted it bought back via California lemon law. It fulfilled the 3 failed repair attempt criteria.

I turned it in and got my check in a week. They didn't fight it. It was pretty easy.

Then I bought the Jeep Wrangler Sahara JKU seen in my avatar. Still have it 19 years later. Best vehicle I ever had.

yea, Toyota really screwed up on changing out the engine in the Tundra. I come from a die-hard Ford family. Over about 15 years, I’ve gotten rid of all my Fords and now drive Toyotas. I had seriously considered a Tundra over an F150. I’ve know several who had the V8 versions are were quite happy with them. If I were you and you like Toyota, once you get the check from this, just buy a used V8 Tundra. Likely last you a life time.

I have a 22 Tundra and had the engine replaced. It ran great before and runs great now, zero issues...knock on wood. Just get the free engine swap and you're good. Every time I bring mine in for routine service, the dealer always asks if I'd like to trade it in towards a newer one. Don't understand why the dealers say they won't touch yours? They love trade ins. In any case, best of luck and don't replace it with a Chevy whatever you do.....
