What do we think of the Mini 14?

I agree Mini 14s aren’t cheap, but are they really that much more than a decent AR?

I keep an eye on FN, Colt and H&R’s websites because I plan to pick up M4 and M16A1 clones if/when our AW ban is struck down. I don’t remember anything they sell being especially cheaper.

Where are people getting these sub-$600 ARs that aren’t junk?
They aren’t. Building your own decent one will cost 14-1800 without getting fancy.

What about off-the-shelf options?

Darqhelmat suggested a few that are comparably priced, and one that is less, but I keep seeing online posts saying there’re a host of $600 ARs that are “better” than the Mini 14.

I get that the AR platform is fundamentally a better, more modern design than the Mini in a general, abstract sense. But are these generic, off brand ARs I see online actually reliable?

It seems like there’s a lot of what I’ll call tacticool lore floating around when it comes to ARs …

Also, at the risk of offending AR fandom, I’ll give a hot take: fixed-mag ARs are a cool range toy and nothing more because, after you’ve had your 10, you might as well have a musket and better have a fixed bayonet.

I have two Mini-14s, one from the early 1990s and registered as a full "Assault Rifle", meaning I can run whatever features I like on it with the stock magazine release.

I see there are sources for stocks very similar to the AC556s, tempted to make it my "A-Team" rifle. :)

My other Mini-14 was purchased in 2015. I customized it a bit with an extended magazine release, an ACOG scope, adjustable gas block, and I painted the synthetic stock in a sort of digital desert camo scheme.

And they both do what I want them to do. I have precision rifles, AR's, and others. The Mini-14 runs reliably and has acceptable accuracy for the intended purpose.
What would you say the intended purpose of a mini 14 is? Also any difference in purpose for the mini 10?

The Ruger Mini-14 was originally created back when the 5.56 NATO cartridge was first coming on-scene with the AR and M-16 platforms. People were generally socialized to the M-14 pattern of rifle, so Ruger kinda sorta scaled down the M-14 (I know, there are important mechanical differences between the platforms. But from a user perspective the similarities are compelling).

I humbly suggest the purpose of a Ruger Mini-14 is approximately the same as the AR-15. It fires the same bullets at essentially the same muzzle velocities. It accommodates magazines of arbitrary capacity. It's semi-automatic. The primary differences are the "furniture" (the Mini-14 being wooden stocked) and the manual of arms (the platforms differ on magazine release, safety actuation, etc. Not a big deal, but they exist).

The Ruger Mini-30 is essentially a Ruger Mini-14 chambered in 7.62 x 39. The same cartridge used by the AK-47 and (most) variants.

Edited to add: I ran the ACOG equipped Mini-14 through a 4 day practical rifle class out in Nevada years ago. It served well, providing accuracy that was commensurate with my talent at the time. On the night shoot before the last day of class I could do no wrong. I was nailing my targets decently fast. The next morning I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Nothing wrong with the rifle or optic. I just had a great night and a less-great morning (and no, I wasn't hung over... :))

3 that are significantly cheaper, 2 that are slight cheaper to the same price.

They have been 💩 forever. It’s a bad design from go to look cool.

The “good” ones started in 08/09 and still aren’t good. Mags cost a butt load, knowledge and parts is limited. You can get a CMMG ranch rifle if you want to spend more than a ruger or a FoxTrot Mike if you want to spend less than a ruger. Both have modern uppers that allow you to attach what ever you want, you can load a sling without pulling your barrel band, you have all the STANAG mags options and they are featureless in CA.

I don’t have ruger I have 4 rifles snd 7-8 handguns from them currently and no idea how much i’ve had over my life. The mini14 though. Turd.

I'm confident what you write is 100% correct.

The primary advantage of a Ruger Mini-14 in California is that one can have a semi-automatic center fire rifle without any mag-lock complications.

I have not seen all the mag-lock options out there. The ones I have seen have been cleverly implemented, but also dangerous when one needs to clear malfunctions. And mag-locked rifles do seem more prone to malfunction.

The cmmg and FM are both featureless. no mag lock. Drop the mags just like a mini14.

Hell get the sig if you want to be real fancy.

Do you mean the Mini-30?
Yes, I meant the 30.

I see, it’s simply what to another era what an AR-15 is to us today. I’ve always been fascinated with the mini, especially with some of the neat builds I’ve seen out there.

Sounds like that was a great class to be in.

I have no experience with off the shelf AR’s as I have built both mine from scratch and modified accordingly after a few carbine courses.

Every friend who got an off the shelf AR like an M&P added a BCM /Geiselle Upper and changed the stock spending as much or more than if they had built it.

My only interest in a mini 14 was if there were some sort of ban. The weight is comparable. What you would spend making it almost as accurate is comparable.

For the average shooter who just wants to have fun and shoot every blue moon,I don’t think it makes much difference what they get.

I have had mine since 1986 and i biught it out of the OC Register on a weekday morning/ full a team configuration with stainless mags/scope/etc and got it for the princely sum of......$375.00 the picture is as it was and is to this day...
It has done what i want but rarely ventures out these days for political hatred of it so my standard go to is the FAL.. before anyone gets wadded up...mag is blocked to 10 and that lever you see going to the triggerguard is a custom maglock/mag release that does not release unless takedown lever is depressed/action cracked...same crap in function as for AR fans...

So what is the point of this rifle? You can build a very sick AR-15 for the same cost that will way outperform it

So what is the point of this rifle? You can build a very sick AR-15 for the same cost that will way outperform it
When it came out in the '80s, the Mini-14 was a more familiar, more appealing, and cheaper .223 rifle than the Colt AR-15, and had similar capabilities.

The Vietnam war was fresh in people's minds back then, and the "Mattel/Plastic Rifle" was associated with that conflict and was looked down upon, whereas the Mini looked very much like the Garand, which the Greatest Generation used to win WWII, and was thus more appealing.

Nowadays, the main point of the rifle is nostalgia (Garand/M14 likeness, or A-Team nostalgia), circumventing CA assault weapon laws (no need for silly bullet buttons or kingpin nonsense with a Mini), or even legal optics (a Mini looks much less "evil" to a left-wing jury than the "scary black rifle").

Additionally, the older 180 series of Minis are superbly light and wonderfully handy, tho they achieved that lightness at the expense of accuracy, and the new 580 series has increased weight to improve accuracy.

At the end of the day, the modern AR-15 is an objectively better rifle. For the same or less money than a new Mini-14, you are likely to get a more accurate and more reliable rifle, with a better and cheaper aftermarket. The Stoner direct impingement system of the 1950s is simply better than the Garand gas piston system of the 1930s.

However, Mini-14s will always be cooler than AR-15s, in the same way a '67 Mustang will always be cooler than a 2026 Mustang.

Well , here is one way to look at it... let us say they ban any rifle that uses an ar15 receiver...or they ban anysort of rifle that uses multiple piece furniture instead of 1 piece ,maybe 2 pc wood ...who knows...
The mini is basically really the only non military looking semi auto 223 rifle around that most people will glance at and not get worked up over...'gets a pass'

Anyway ...

That’s a great answer
