What hammer fired handgun would you buy for around $1,000

Fair enough. So not a mistake, but a preference issue.

I think RMSc suites the 1911, HiPower, and 75B narrow slides. It's a common cut with many options.
The DPP is the same footprint just a little bit longer, so it's the same width. For a range gun it's just nice to have an XL, it also works for carry though and you can run an ST. Rmsc is perfect for micro compacts like shield etc where you don't have the length on the slide to spare

A cz is a decent option then, if you are ok with running the DPP footprint which would be a delta point pro or vortex XL/ST you can get it cut by vigilante arms for under 200. If you want other optics like RMR its trickier because it needs a plate due to the width of the slide which adds some cost. The CZ 75s are also great, the SPO1 essentially just has a heavier rail which adds weight.
I had Vigilante Machine mill mine for a modified K footprint no problem. I run a full size EPS on it. More than 1000 rounds no issues.

Your mistake was you didn't specify caliber or capacity.

Obviously you should get a revolver in .45 caliber.
Under $1000 all in will be tough in California.

Gun under $1000, pick up a S&W 586 4”, add an allchin red dot mount, choose your optic, and start blastin…

If 9 mm is what you are interested in, I’d look for a P226. If you go used, you can find them at or under $750; I paid $600 for mine at a gun store. If you like .45 ACP, either a 1911 or a P220. Again, used is the way to go for P220 and I’ve seen them for similar prices to P226 used. I passed on a P220 at a gun store for $500 and nothing wrong with it. I don’t care for red dot optics which will jack up prices. Also, look for used 1911s. Generally speaking, used pistols are your best bet in terms of value. Most are rarely shot much.

Used P226 for $600? Maybe a few years age (IMHO).
I paid $600 for mine at a local gun store less than a year ago. My next door neighbor at a different local gun store paid $700 for his and there was another one for simlar price. These were ones without LCI and mag disconnect. They really aren’t that hard to find if you give yourself a year timeframe to find it.

Rmsc optics are tiny why would you want that if there's a better option? defender XL vs CCW:

Agreed the larger window is an advantage, especially for competition. But the SP-01 slide is narrow enough that mounting an RMR-sized optic generally requires a plate, whereas the K footprint allows direct mounting. There are tradeoffs either way. I wouldn't call the smaller footprint a huge mistake, particularly for a gun that isn't dedicated to competition. Holosun EPS is a decent size direct mount option. Wager has cut RMR in the past, I wasn't aware he no longer does.

the DPP allows direct mount of a vortex XL or even some sig optics, DPP is the same thing as the rmsc/k just a little bit longer so it fits perfectly on the 75/sp01 slide without a plate, direct mount.

92FS probably the worst option considering the expense and jankiness with milling for a red dot. He’s gonna be well over a grand all in

Cheapest and best way is to probably pickup a used p226 for like $600 and buy an optic ready slide
Where can I buy a used P226 for $600 tho 👀. I would prob buy one for that price.

You keep saying that.

They share lug and screw hole locations (DPP using a larger screw), but the cut and optic footprints are not the same.

RMSc optics run 0.9~1.0" wide vs DPP 1.1~1.3" wide
RMSC is about 1.6" long vs DPP 1.85~1.90".

Small numbers but it's a small area.

Getting back in to hand guns after mostly shooting my ARs for the last year. I own only striker fired handguns at the moment and want something else for a change. My only experience with hammer fired guns are when I was younger shooting my Dad's 1911. I'd love a kimber 2k11 but I don't want to spend the nearly 3k take home price. What are your guys suggestions for something around $1k?

Sell some of your striker pistols to add to your 1k and get a better hammer-fired. If you can get close to 2500, get a Platypus. Quality over quantity. If you don't wanna sell, get a CZ SP-01.
