What should be my first revolver?

So far torn between these Revolvers.

We’re talking revolvers, which strictly speaking, haven’t been practical fighting handguns in since the Newhall incident. Of course it’s vibes based. And that’s fine. Not everything firearms related needs to be about surviving a self-defense scenario.
So respectfully, people always say this stuff. In a couple months I’ll have 28 years on as a cop. An insane number of homicides (where I am at least) are committed with sawed off Ruger 10/22’s and sawed off single shot crack barrel shotguns. So when I see people say like a SW shield single stack or a revolver isn’t an effective weapon I kind of laugh.

An A Team style 10/22 with a 25 rounder is probably the best defensive weapon for like 95% of everyone. A monkey could dump all 25 into whatever target under 90% of conditions.

I agree. Gawernator was just teasing me because he knows my primary CCW is a J-fame Model 637.

If I were a cop, I’d probably want to carry an autoloader with a red dot and the largest capacity magazines possible. But I’m just an ordinary technocrat office worker.

I’ve never felt underarmed carrying a five-shot revolver loaded with +p Hydra-Shocks.

I have a carried a 5 shot a frame .38 as a back up gun at work for 18 years and primarily carried the same gun as my CCW outside work for that same period of time.

Would you say TRR8 has the similar durability as GP100?
Unless you plan on shooting expensive +p+ ammo for the rest of your life, you will not run into durability issues with any of those three options. If you do plan on exclusively shooting proof loads, get the gp100.

Jerry miculek currently holds a world record plate rack run using a significantly modified version of the trr8 platform (N frame half lugs).

Love my 586
Yeah. Hard to beat the 586. Especially the old ones. The full underlug really helps with the .357 loads. I love mine.

If I was to suggest a first revolver, I’d also say S&W 586 in a 4” barrel, maybe 6” but don’t do a snub nose.

S&W 19’s, 66’s, and 27’s/28’s are nice but 100% shoot different cuz the 1/2 underlug. Cosmetically, they look better but don’t like the shooting experience as much as the 586.

Don’t bother with Ruger, and don’t spend thousands on a Colt. Just my $.02¢.

Whats your gripe with Ruger friend?

Never liked em. I can’t stand the design of the Red and Blackhawk series. Looks stupid and I don’t like the way they shoot. Finally made a good looking gun in the GP100 but it’s basically a knock off of a S&W so why not just buy one.

No thanks. I’m good. I’ll keep all my S&W’s & Colts. Again……my $.02¢ of course.

Ugh thats one I wanted as well

I settled for a Stainless Steel Loaded 1911 and now I want a TRP.

I wonder if I would feel the same if I get a GP100 and regret not getting the Super GP100?
Why get a trp? You can send your loaded into Springfield and get the front strap checkered if you want.

The only thing you can't do to it is add a rail, but how often do we shoot at night?

My current gun collection stands at about 9 guns in total. Pretty small arsenal for a Californian. Its a mix of multiple pistols in different calibers, to a shotgun and a couple of rifles.

I am on the lookout for my first revolver.

Whats a good one that should be included into ones collection in general?

Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
My first revolver was an S&W 25-2, didn't know it existed until I saw a classified ad for it.

It looks like a dirty Harry revolver but it shoots .45 ACP on moon clips.

Looks like.45 acp and .38 special are about the same cost per round and I bet you may already have a pistol chambered in .45 acp.

Glock 34 for scale.

How do the new Colt Pythons compare to the old stuff? Vs a 586?
I've not owned an older Colt and they are generally prettier but the new ones are considered to be better engineered. The older stuff was hand-fitted but it kind of needed to be. If you want (or need) work done on the older ones, the number of revolver gunsmiths who can capably work on them is lower, or so I've been told. I have a couple of post-2020 Pythons and the operation is sublime. The older 'Royal Blue' finish is spectacular.

I shot a 4" mid-80s 586 and it was really nice. It was well-broken in and I didn't feel like it gave up much to the modern Pythons.

You should consider the Smith & Wesson Performance Center Model 627.
8 shot 357 mag.

Can’t go wrong with any of them, as seen people have their own preference on which brands they think are better, kind of like the “what oil should I run in my car” question, pick your poison.

Another vote for the S&W 686 plus. 4 inch. I had TK Customs cut mine for moon clips. One of my favorites to shootIMG_0904.webp
